Question here: I'm looking to buy an SSD, but I'm also looking to dual boot my machine with OS X. Could I partition a 120gb into 60/60, and install OS X on one partition, and have the second partition use SRT while in Windows 7 on the other partition? Thanks
i dont get it, so why would you use intel smart response if you already have an ssd? isn't the ssd going to be faster by itself, and it supports trim, so why would you want to use an ssd and a mechanical drive at the same time using more power to get less speed, and make the ssd die faster? can someone please explain this to me
Of course you will have a regular SSD as a boot drive, that alone is faster (something like 60GB is good). However, for storage you want to use a HDD (cause no one can afford 500+ GB SSDs), but HDDs aren't as fast. So use the SRT to make your HDD have similar (slower, but ALOT better) performance to a SSD. Not going to be as fast as the SSD, but close to it. That way you have all fast drives without the premium price.
Can you still use SRT with an SSD without a gigabyte board but just reformat? And if you have to reformat, how do youdo it, when does the oppurtunity come about? When you run the software? Thanks
I heard somewhere that Intel actually has 20g SSD available specifically for this. It makes me want to go Intel but I don't want to buy an expensive Intel setup and then find that AMD has made something similar for less cost, though after the launch of their latest Bulldozer series, my opinion of AMD has somewhat... shifted ◔_◔
hey i have a msi 880gm-e41 mother board a 500g hdd and a 120g ssd i want to make my ssd drive a cache drive how do i do that plz send me a emai if you can help adamds2000@hottmail.com
Okay lets just say I have a super fast 60gb ssd as my boot drive, a 2 tb 5400 rpm hdd for storage, and a 1 tb 7200 rpm hdd for apps and games. Would getting another 60gb ssd with SRT be worth it in terms of price versus performance?
@waiiatwi because ssd has limitation when it comes to read and write. if you were to use the ssd for os and hdd for program files then the computer would still take a long time to load those files because they are on hdd.
@don2xify It doesn't not matter how big your old (spin disk) drive is, The only thing you MUST have is a motherboard that supports Smart Response Technology and a new SSD to replace it/
I wonder if any of us who viewed this video would deliberately/willingly open IE unless it was for those 3 rare instances whether it's to download FF, troubleshoot connection to a particular site, or accidentally clicked the icon
I have the same mobo and cpu and 3 64GB SSDs...what I want to do is RAID 0 2 of the SSDs for my boot drive and then use the other 64GB SSD along with my 3TB HDD in a Intel Smart Response Config, is that possible?
so i have a maximus IV gene-z,and an i7 2600k.i just bought a ocz agility 3 60gb ssd and a wd caviar black 1 tb.i was thinking of installing the os on the ssd partitioning it and with the remaining space use SRT.how do i do this?do i:
a)enable RAID in bios followed by unplugging hdd and installing os on ssd and then enabling SRT once windows is installed
b)enable RAID and plug HDD along with ssd and use SRT
c)enable RAID install on HDD and then plug SSD,enable SRT,delete os and install on ssd ag
@Theairplaneguy4ever Install your OS on the SSD as you would do with a HDD. In this video linus said you choose the capacity you wanna use as cache so i think you re ready but tbh, 60gb for both OS/SRT seems a little bit short to me. I mean I would allocate 60GB to win7 and 60 others for caching. but i don't know if win7 still needs 60GB to run fine on a SSD...
@Ideeem i installed win 7 on ssd in the end cuz using srt is really risky and i had to reformat my drives twice.60gb is more than enough for windows as long as u dont install anything else, and u cant activate srt while os is installed on ssd.i found out that myself
@Theairplaneguy4ever tried to partition your SSD? so that OS and SRT are separate. I guess you did but just in case. And why and how SRT is risky may I ask?
@Ideeem while doin an overclock ,which FAILED.i tried to revert to the original frequency.And...guess wut?it changed the sata controller to IDCE,thus reformmating the disk.i updated my HD graphics driver, and BSOD then reformat.so SRT can fail really hard.
what will happen if you use a mechanical hard drive for caching?? will it work too, but slower? will it have more speed?? or it will not work at all??
@TheOrbitalDropShock Im not sure about it mate but Id say NO you cant. However you can use 120 ssd or bigger then It will partition your SSD on its own and then you can use spare space to install your games, aps etc.
@CHAZER134 not exactly. You plug it to SATA socket on your motherboard that supports Intel SRT and then at power up your machine you enter a BIOS and in SATA settings you change to RAID0. then you save BIOS settings and reboot. Job done
@flameboy823 it wont let you use bigger then 64 gig SSD. However if you use bigger then 64 gig ssd then your ssd will be partitioned by motherboard and spare space you can use to install your apps etc.
now here is an idea just came up to me , i don't think it will work but i have to ask , can we use something like a FlashDrive USB 2 ,3 to do the SRT instead of SSD ?
Which would be better for me for speed? Two Seagate 15k 600 gb drives on a RAID O compared to One 15k 600 gb and One Intel SSD 510 series 120 gb on the ISRT.
Im getting a new pc with 500gb hd and a 40gb ssd it is coming with no os installed, so do i need to go into the bios first and setup just my hdd for raid and then install the os and the intel srt drivers and configure it then?
@Phen0mable It does make sense, i was just wondering if i needed to put my HD's in RAID mode before installing my OS, and yeah i got me pc now its all sorted and the answer to my origional question is 'Yes'
@Allies19991 not necessarily mate. If you have your OS installed then you just plug your SSD to your board, change SATA settings to RAID0 and reboot. Linux mentioned that in his video.
@Phen0mable Yes i know, note the comment is from 2 months ago so i have since brought the pc and made it and it works so case closed thank you good night :P
@pablov3d Yes. Any SSD with 60GB and below will be compatible with Intel SRT, the faster your SSD's read and write speed, the faster your system performance will get.
@TheDCWasteland Any applications (games) that you use most frequently will get faster over time. SRT learns which applications you use the most, the more you use them over time, the more cached memory of those applications are stored and thus increasing system performance. This will decrease game load times, but will not positively or adversely affect you frames.
Can SRT be used to speed-up a non-boot hard drive? I would like to use one main SSD (128GB) for OS, a few programs and games and then a second SSD as cache to boost my 1 or 2TB HDD. Would it even make sense, like for instance when processing a lot of RAW images in Photoshop?
If anyone knows, please answer and help me choose so I can order my new computer.
@JD12ish Well there may be an issue with SRT writing memory chunks from you boot SSD, it won't cause any problems it'll just be pointless waste of performance. The way SRT is designed means that it'll speed up frequently used applications on other drives, including your OS. I'd recommend the same method Linus used, having a single 60GB SSD for SRT, and HDDs for booting your OS aswell as data and application storage. This method compared against your own should fare the same performance output.
So if I have got my Z68X-UD3P with windows and all my games and software on it, i can just add a 30GB SSD to the system, enable it in Windows and i will start to see performance increases.
@Mdemons12 I'd recommend going to the Gigabyte site, find your motherboard and download the latest "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" driver. Install the driver, shutdown you PC on completion, and then hook up you SSD. Turn on your PC and once your back to your windows desktop, run SRT configuration and then just select your SSD.
I was going true all your reviews in the last couple months and i do really want to see a review for GA-990FXA-UD7 the ultimate motherboard for AMD it wold be great to see it from you couse you do awesome and the best reviews i can fnd on youtube for bow looking forward for that review and what can you fit on it
@rulezian1 Well your right about your system getting faster and faster as SRT learns which applications you use the most. The only real limit here it memory bandwidth, and read/write speeds. If your running SATA3 6GB/s, then you should have the bandwidth to support multiple application caching. And the system speed is limited by the read and write speeds of you SSD.
@RickyPinguim0 I guess its the SSD as OS but don't forget, if you want to install alot of thing like game, a SSD of 120go is between 200-300$, but for a WD500go black is about 60$. I will personally use the SRT because I have many game. I already used the Vertex(1) 120go and I had to unistall some game... But right now I'm using my vertex on my*'workstation''PC and I have 80go that I don't use so that's not bad. The question is which SSD take for SRT. I thought to the Corsair GT or Force3 60go
@RickyPinguim0 SSD alone is always faster BUT u are capped on the storage with that SSD alone at about like 120 gb or somethin bigger BUT it costs a TON of money
SRT makes a standart 1TB drive almost as fast as an SSD which makes it worth doing
@RickyPinguim0 did you not watch the video? obviously using SRT is a MUCH more reasonable way to get very fast performance from your hard drives. face it, if you're building a new pc you can get a $100 SSD and use it with an old hard drive and get extreme speeds out of your hard drive
I dunno how often u watch but he's said before multiple times that he can't be bothered validating windows every time that he changes out a piece of hardware...
Stupidly enough even if you change minute things, no matter what is windows will always require to validate that particular copy...
But all in all bud 'times are getting tough for linus" thats legendary LOL!
Yes mate, once the market share for SSD's increases and they become more of a 'mainstream' for the consumer. This of course depends on there price, performance & other factors but that being said it is most likely after SSD's become 'mainstream' that PCI based storage may be the next big thing in the following 5 or so years.
@v8superstars Thanks man!!!!!! Cool, so same thing that happen to VCR, Tape, & HD-DVD Blu-Ray took over & CD... But soon we may not have them no more & have to down-load stuff of the PC, console, & ipod...
Linus great review! I still have a question though which wasn't fully covered in the review. I just ordered a new Gigabyte 268X-UD3H-B3 board along with an Agility 3 60GB SSD and WD Sata 600 HD.
Now I was wondering, would it be possible to use the ssd as a boot disc and assigning like lets say 20GB for the SRT? In your review you do mention that you can use part of your SSD and the other part for applications and sorts but can it still be used as a bootdisc too?
@Primithras I'm pretty sure that SSD Caching makes the Mechanical hard drive as fast as the ssd. You don't really take a part of the SSD to make the hard drive faster. They're basically combined, speed wise.
can´t I install windows on the ssd (agility 3 60gb) and still use the rest of it (some 22gb) as srt for a second 1tb sta 2 drive???? bought p8z68-pro and "acceleration" button is missing on the intel rapid storage
will the real slim shady plz stand up

so if your going to have a 120gb+ SSD as a boot drive and some games/stuff, its not really worth it having another SSD as a cache right?

so do u have to enable AHCI mode in bios before enabling SRT??? I guess what I mean is when u use SRT can u still enable/use the advantage of TRIM?
is it still just better to use ur ssd as a boot drive vs caching em????
Thnx

If anyone knows, please answer and help me choose so I can order my new computer.
JD12ish 7 months ago

Mdemons12 7 months ago
@Mdemons12 I'd recommend going to the Gigabyte site, find your motherboard and download the latest "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" driver. Install the driver, shutdown you PC on completion, and then hook up you SSD. Turn on your PC and once your back to your windows desktop, run SRT configuration and then just select your SSD.

@Mdemons12 you dont enable it in windows mate.

So... My boot time get faster and faster after every boot until it reaches the limit?
rulezian1 7 months ago
@rulezian1 Well your right about your system getting faster and faster as SRT learns which applications you use the most. The only real limit here it memory bandwidth, and read/write speeds. If your running SATA3 6GB/s, then you should have the bandwidth to support multiple application caching. And the system speed is limited by the read and write speeds of you SSD.

What's faster?using SRT or having an SSD for OS and HDD for storage?
RickyPinguim0 7 months ago 23
@RickyPinguim0 I guess its the SSD as OS but don't forget, if you want to install alot of thing like game, a SSD of 120go is between 200-300$, but for a WD500go black is about 60$. I will personally use the SRT because I have many game. I already used the Vertex(1) 120go and I had to unistall some game... But right now I'm using my vertex on my*'workstation''PC and I have 80go that I don't use so that's not bad. The question is which SSD take for SRT. I thought to the Corsair GT or Force3 60go
Doomshine72 7 months ago
@RickyPinguim0 SSD alone is always faster BUT u are capped on the storage with that SSD alone at about like 120 gb or somethin bigger BUT it costs a TON of money
SRT makes a standart 1TB drive almost as fast as an SSD which makes it worth doing
SuperKiraGamer2 7 months ago

Will the SSD be to new HDD some-day?
Martinx88813 8 months ago
@Martinx88813
Yes mate, once the market share for SSD's increases and they become more of a 'mainstream' for the consumer. This of course depends on there price, performance & other factors but that being said it is most likely after SSD's become 'mainstream' that PCI based storage may be the next big thing in the following 5 or so years.
v8superstars 8 months ago
@v8superstars Thanks man!!!!!! Cool, so same thing that happen to VCR, Tape, & HD-DVD Blu-Ray took over & CD... But soon we may not have them no more & have to down-load stuff of the PC, console, & ipod...

Trying to use a single SSD as a boot drive and for SRT is a pain.
gadgetman007 8 months ago
Linus great review! I still have a question though which wasn't fully covered in the review. I just ordered a new Gigabyte 268X-UD3H-B3 board along with an Agility 3 60GB SSD and WD Sata 600 HD.
Now I was wondering, would it be possible to use the ssd as a boot disc and assigning like lets say 20GB for the SRT? In your review you do mention that you can use part of your SSD and the other part for applications and sorts but can it still be used as a bootdisc too?
Primithras 8 months ago
@Primithras I'm pretty sure that SSD Caching makes the Mechanical hard drive as fast as the ssd. You don't really take a part of the SSD to make the hard drive faster. They're basically combined, speed wise.

can´t I install windows on the ssd (agility 3 60gb) and still use the rest of it (some 22gb) as srt for a second 1tb sta 2 drive???? bought p8z68-pro and "acceleration" button is missing on the intel rapid storage
