  • i wish they would re-open this ride

  • Type O Negative sent me here xD

  • @kyussfan6 My girlfriend's girlfriend sent me here :-)

  • @Rocco11510 she looks like..... YOU yeah.

  • LOL My dad lies, he said you climbed onto it and jump off, he probably wanted me to piss my pants, it worked

  • looks safe enough

  • I see those towers everyday. They are used by Fort Benning to train airborne troops.

  • WOW!!!!! Looks like a thrill! Love when it "lands!!"

  • I lived there for 23 Wonderful Years. 23rd street between mermaid and neptune aves. There were also ramps made out of concrete next to the parachute tower that was once a antique car ride which was also closed down but was accessible and I would ride my bike on it for hours!

  • I suppose the parachute jump has been replaced by the bungie jump I guess the thrill is still there, the attitude has changed somewhat it's all about moving on never forever young!

  • I always wondered what that did!... the structure is still on Coney Island. I can't imagine riding that!!

  • thats a historical landmark so it cant be torn down

  • Damn that landing looks like that could be rough, lol Is it basically a freefall? Im sure there is some safety equip to it

  • COOL

  • That is incredible footage. I've seen this structure my whole life (36) and this is the first video I've ever seen of it working.

  • Ok now i know what this is! I use to think people actually jumped off of that with parachutes!

  • There was a 1964-65 World's Fair on the same site as well, but it was smaller and was not as grand as this Fair was. It left behind legacies such as the Unisphere and the Lagoon of Nations.

  • Didn't the world fair come back in the 1960s? My mom said she remembered going. But she was born in the 50s.

  • that ride is in coney island not six flags but 2 bad it dosent work anymore

  • wow theres so much History Behind this Im glad that i've seen this video I got the vision now

  • Those were the days....no safety issues here....

  • haha. They just flop around when they land. You could get hurt with a landing like that.

  • yOU CANTAKE A RIDE AT six flags. This ride is available there. Fin ride it is. ;)

  • Six Flags?!? Jesus Christ! Although I'm afraid of Coney Island becoming something like "Six Flags Over Coney" someday.

  • @sunshineloveirka The ride which is @ 6F Great Adventure in New Jersey is a cool ride, but it's a simulation. It's a cable-controlled descent @ less-than free fall speed. This one actually used the parachute to slow the descent, ( or so I've read) w/ a spring device on the bottom of the seat to further cushion the landing. The drop towers like the one @ Dorney ( The Dominator) or the old Free Fall rides are prob. closer to feeling like this ride. Must have been great!!

  • I always wanted to know what that old abandoned tower used to do. Thanks.

  • I hate to take away from the experiance and great history from this park, but coney island (amusment park) sucks. i really hate to say it, but it is true, the rides have gotten boring and the cyclone is really great to ride, but, since theyre are way better roller coasters this day, it has really gotten stale, and the free admission, with all the

  • * litter and dirt that has built up through the years, it has lost its exitment, the fact though that it will be completely remodeled is going to be awesome though, and finally we can get some new things going on instead of the same old 3 adult rides and the rest kiddie rides and polar express rides that blast music like hell, anyway, happy to hear we get new stuff for coney island, though. :D

  • I hear there will be new Parachute Jump when Coney Island is remodelled

  • my grandpa worked on the cyclone, greasing up the tracks and my grandmother got stuck riding the parachute jump. it took them 3 hours to get her down from the top of the ride. my grandpa is buried in staten island, the view from his grave looks straight towards Coney Island and the Parachute Jump. They spent their lives telling stories of when they worked on the Boardwalk and all the rides. Thanks for posting this.

  • I am curious to know if there are any remnants of the parachute ride in Coney Island to this day as that is where the tower was moved to after the fair. Interesting to hear your personal connection to the Fair through your family.

  • funny how the park next to my house once hosted on of the greatest fairs of all time. The parachute jump is extinct in this day and age as you know and astroland is about to be torn up. Fun to see this though =]

  • It's near the local baseball park. Do a search for Astroland Coney Island, and go West from there. The tower is still up, but sadly the ride hasn't been in operation since 1968:(

  • @doogie1136 the whole tower is still there. recently it was made a "public arts project" by adding a light show on the tower.

  • @doogie1136 The tower is still there! Just isn't operational....

  • @brandonisawesome11 I guess they deemed it too old and dangerous. The structure sits right next to the Brooklyn Cyclone's ball park.

  • @doogie1136 the parachute ride tower is still up it was registered on the us national register of Historical places some years back and I personally see it every couple of months when leaving and entering the island

  • I think I know where your grandpa was buried.

Is it like a white house.

  • @blueyeragazza I used to live in Coney and was very lucky to have been able to ride on it before the Tilyou family shut it down

  • this footage is absolutely beatiful- you should be very proud of it

  • You might consider contributing the film to

    archive (dot) org/details/movies

  • doogie - I remember seeing a PBS documentary on the 1938-40 worlds fair narrated by Jason Robards. It used real color footage taken by the fair. I don't know if it featured some of your father's footage or not.

    Thanks for posting...

  • I saw that and bought the film through the Queens museum- very interesting to watch, given our own footage that wasn't in that movie. Also see Aquacade and Hot Mikado footage here...

  • I want to take a ride!
