Amazing playing there, bass sounds great what year is that bass?.My father ownes a 1979 4002 rickenbacker in fireglow burst red and i have no idea how much its worth
@stomaoma Hi Thanks for commenting..Thanks for the nice words..I started young, playing over 30 years now. I play all the time.. still.. But when your out of shape it gets tiring let me tell ya!
I find your playing inspiring and your tone is dead on the money. I had been debating between a Fender Precision and a Ric 4001 Bass. I just love the looks and tone of yours. I like progressive rock and ambient music. I like playing Bass with a pick too. I guess I might keep playing my Tobias until I can save for a Ric 4001. Please keep posting; because your one of my favorite Bass players on You Tube. Bless you and keep the Ric fire burning!
@zenjim007 I have both a Fender Precision and a Ric 4003...I'm no good on either :-(
I also like prog rock, I find the Fender more 'user-friendly', as does Dave Anderson (Hawkwind, Groundhogs). I also have a Gibson SG bass which I'm marginally better on.
I'd been after one for 34 years but recommend trying before you buy, they don't suit everyone. Regrettably I have more money/enthusiasm than talent/sense :-(
Still, I'll keep watching this video and wishing :-D
r@1966rubblerouser Thanks for your advice; I will be truthful in that I also find the Fender more user friendly. My Tobias is a 5 string; and I kind of like the Fender Jazz Bass in the 5 string also; however I do like 70s vintage Fender Precision Bass's too. I guess its a matter of waiting for the right one to come along. Take care and I will watch future posts.
@zenjim007 Thanks for commenting.. The Debate is simple for me.. Fender will sound good almost on anything especially in the studio. Ricky's are very definitive in sound and do not work for everything.. The rick is my favorite bass and the best for active loud prog and brite too! with fresh rotosounds!!! It's has also served me well on reggae, I string it with Labella flats.. for that and pop too. But sometimes rick takes up too much real estate in the mix. P's are more narrow. Thanks ! CT
@monoforone Life gets in the way but I will post that video !!! I'm ording some rotosounds from ebay they are at least 8 bucks more in the friggin stores!!
@neen070456 I can get into it when I do not have to think too much;;;// like trying to recall the notes or the arrangement.. Other wise I make strange faces.. I see it on my other vids when I'm struggling!!! I knew well enough no to think..
Great sounding tone! Does you Rick have any loud notes/dead spots or strings that are louder than others? I'm having a heck of a time tuning up my Rick!
@callthemall It does but very slightly in the middle of the neck. Might be action is to low, neck that is not set properly (straight), frets that have worn unevenly or dislodging from the neck..Strings have to be fresh. Worn out strings or poor quality strings will have lousy intonation. .. notes louder than others could mean some pick up issues one pole being softer than the other. But Again without having the bass in my hands,Could be a bunch of little things. Pro set up is what you need.
Very cool version. Nice add ons.Chris Squire music leaves it wide open for inovations just like the ones you used. Excellent job. I have the exact same bass, with a Sunn coliseum amp.Post more.
@carlythelovely Hi Carly the lovely.. I would not say better I would say different. Squire's sound is a huge factor of a pick. But he is playing with his fingers as well. It's hard to see but the pick hits first then his finger.. that is the sound/technique that he developed and the only one to have ever created this amazing bass tone in the studio! Thanks for watching! Chris
@MegaRoflcopter92 I purchased the 1975 4001 used and dirty off the rack of a Sam Ash store in New Jersey for 600.00. This was in 1994... If these guys would have spent some time cleaning it up they could have sold it for alot more. I took a chance. Took it all apart, cleaned and put it back together. Everyone loves this bass and the way it plays and sounds... ricky's can be very different from one to the next..
Always enjoyed this song back in the day but had no idea or had ever considered what sort of equipment it took to produce the sound. Well, what an excellent reproduction. Had to watch the whole thing. Wonderful job!
Well my friend says gota let ya make own contacts but got ya info. The gut that would know all an what they into in the industry is known as Buddy Blaze. Google it as well as, Nightswan. Find a way to make a contact, he is totally a class guy. May know others dabbling in yes or want too around the world. Follow your yellow brick road brother... I tried. Jonny from MN.
Yea Chris Buddy is a Luther I believe an bet he has only top contacts from around the world knowing who is workin an who would be into what. It will be about a magical search wont it.. Actually I always have thought there would be 2 groups of sound we would never hear right again when they are done,. YES and RUSH. Well I ended a search today for the girl that turned me onto YES during the sticky summer of experamentation in 75. Found her in Rhode Island talked for an hour. Whats old, new again!
Wish I could send this personally. since your in LA ever met a guitar builder named Buddy who was orig road sound and band manager Steve Ray Von, Great White, lastly with 9 inch Nails and had a studio there. He is slowin down now built a shop an studio on Kona. He is my best friends college roommate an possible he knows talent sharing your ideas. I will have my pal look at this an send your hopes on to Buddy. ... Cant hurt to try! Jonny
@mn1jon HI Jon, I know some Luthers here in town if that what you mean.. I am looking currently to play with some foks that have some yes under their belt.. always searching.. Thanks for hooking that up.. Let me know Chris!!
Thanks for reply, your head heart an hopes really sound like they in the right place. A bummer is I had just read some stuff bout another person with thought of the same tribute act. His comment was,.. he believed he could find good enough people to lay some things down in the studio an put together some cover tunes respectably. He has come to the conclusion his efforts to find an put good enough live talent together with same ideas of direction an innovation have became futile an impossible.
Cant believe I watched this cover again. But after all you did just cover the GREATEST BASSIST of all time with success. You got his pick-n-thumb technique down an yo-momma should be proud too! Are you workin on an got vocals to do harmony with those great base lines your puttin out? Whats the name of the group your workin with now? I think we would like to see a taste of what you guys are experimenting with. Thanks again!!
@mn1jon Squire influenced my playing a major way and learned many of those yes records.I do lots of recording in my studio for other bands My last band was a blues rock band before that a folk rock band, shoegaze style and me and my friend got signed to capitol here in L.A. and put out a cd worldwide but it is nothing close to progressive. No band at the moment just a studio rat. I would love to be in a yes style band or even a tribute act. I have released my own music but nothing yesworthy.
Wow! I never heard anyone take that on without destroying it along the way some how. Ya got some set of stones mister!!! I enjoyed every second of it and hope you get teamed up with the right people and go far. Squire would be proud to hear that cover and I hope he does. Ive never sat through a whole cover before! WHEW !!! Thanks man, rock on!!!
@mn1jon .. Thanks for the praise.. Ya I know I messed up some parts but it is live and I"m winging it at times, improvising on some other sections. IT would be nice to be back out on the road again. It's rare I get to play in this fashion with any band.. I usually have to lay it down.. Chris T.
@curly5115 Your making me blush here... Thanks for all the praise. I was lucky to get this Ricky, so you can be too. I was in the right place at the right time. it's a 1975 4001 and was hanging on a wall at Sam Ash in New Jersey. It was used and dirty and needed some work. I took it all apart, fixed the electronics and has been with me ever since!
AWESOME! First of all the best part of that song is Chris's bass line, and the Rickenbacker sound. Not only do you have all the little nuances down, your ad libs and harmonic to half tones to full tone thingy near the end and your ending riff was great. I'm a bass player, and I'm bowing to you!
I enjoy using a pick but learned on my fingers. I like finger style a lot more but there are certanly times where it calls for using a pick, and a lot of bassists are afraid to admit that. I think there are a lot of tones you can only get with a pick and vice versa. But I also have a metal pick. Oh and by the way, awesome cover. I am jealous of your gear.
@BASSMASTA264 Thats sounds pretty cool. I could see Squire doing that. I do have a metal pick and have used it to record in the past. Have not brought that pick out in quite a while! Very articulate sound for sure. I love the pick. I use my fingers to but not as well. I posted a rush video and you can see my time is off. Working on it though. Thanks!
@SJBeccia Hi, every song I use a different processing method here on you tube, On Roundabout I used a vintage 10 band (blue) EQ, Fender pro junior hand wired reissue (18 watt) tube guitar amp into a mesa boogie dual 15 cabinet with Ev 15" speakers. I turn up the amp so it clips just enough to help that bite on the top end ....mic'd with a AKG414.... Squire used Marshall guitar heads and cabs early on.. Then went to Sunn.. This is what I have read but you never know.. CT
Very well done! I've been C.S. fan from the beginning. 'Fish Out of Water' is my all-time favorite album. I'm not a bassist, but to me, Squire is the benchmark for which to compare all other rock bassists. Out of respect for Chris, I can't say you equal him, but you are obviously an incredibly talented musician with an excellent ear. Thanks for sharing this with the world. You deserve recognition for this, and I truly hope it leads to a successful and prosperous future. God bless you!
I enjoyed this very much! I was the bass player in my garage band in high school and the Rick was always my dream bass and it was because of Chris Squire. What I didn't have was any talent. But this young man is awesome and I wish for you all great things!
@TheBrokenWing1 Copy that to see all the current ricky designs... I have had some teachers try to teach me..... but taught myself how to play bass by learning many cover songs and studying some of the greatest bassist in the world... including the man Chris Squire... Thanks CT
@TheBrokenWing1 Go to rickenbacker dot and slect models and that will show you all of their models.. I tried putting in the link but as I can see you tube will not permit that!...
@ThatsrightiplayWoW Hi Thanks for the response! This is a 1975 4001 that I purchased used at Sam Ash in the early 90's. It was filthy dirty and the frets were tainted green from not being cleaned. I took it all apart and cleaned every thing, put additional grounding foil inside the cavities to reduce hum. Installed a bypass pot which sends the pickups directly to the out put jack. I paid less than a 1/4 of what is is worth now. Thanks Sam Ash for giving me such a great deal!
I don't usually watch these. Most of the time, tons of mistakes are made, or it's just not recreating the vibe properly, and not being very true to the source material that is being honoured. But, I was transfixed for the entire clip. Really, really nice job! I loved watching, and hearing this!! Chris would be proud.
Great Ric, too, by the way. I always loved that colour for that bass.
YES! Yes you can. Nice job, dude.
