Just read about the sad loss of Dobie Gray. 'Out on the Floor' was the Northern Soul anthem to beat them all, and Dobie brought much happiness to my former years. Legend is a clichéd term, but not in Dobie's case. RIP
Gimme the beat boys and my free my soul I wanna get lost in you rock and roll and drift away...
God bless you Mister Lawrence Darrow Brown.... Like many of your contemporaries you gave us so much and asked for so little.... You are truly on your way to a better place...
As with Bobby Sheen's "Dr. Love," "The 81" by Candy & the Kisses, and The Orlons' "Envy," our British brothers and sisters in soul took a '60s soul gem and gave it a second life--far bigger than it's original airing--and turned many people on to it on BOTH sides of the Atlantic. Bless them for that.
great northern....best ever memories of dancing thru the nite at soul weekenders in caister....great days they were.....still do northern nites in norwich....out on the floor....yeh yeh yeh...
Cant believe even now 30+ years on this can still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.Truly one of the great feel good songs of the era, a timeless classic, cheers KTF.
LOVE THIS TRACK ~ this is the best of Northern soul ever ~ the music of today pales along side this ~ it is a "Do I love you ..indeed I do" song.. x pt62 x
amazing sound, just had to dance to this it has everything even the lyrics would have you singing away as you sweated buckets.i certainly got my kicks out on the floor to this.
I snapped a hamstring doing the splits, dancing to this in 1979. Everything went white, I almost passed out. The upside... I can still do the splitsat 52!
haha The exact same thing happened to me my friend and I can still do it at 53......amazing to know that this happened to you too......I was dancing to help me by al wilson hahahaha
I remember the mad rush to the dance floor, to this great classic song. Amazing. Sweet as sweet can be, Thanks for posting. Keep the Faith, once a N Soul lover, always a N soul lover. It stays in your heart, and, theres nothing you can do about it but, Recal great, Times, music, when music was music, and Dance Dance Dance. KTF. LOL .
Get your Lambretta out and enjoy the sun on the open road, while playing this on your ipod, heaven, watch outg for other road users and speed cameras,
Wow.. thanks Ian for the trip down 'memory lane' there! Closing my eyes I'm back in my Youth Group on the dancefloor circa mid 70s - that DJ had real taste - no pop or rock was played - all NS tracks!! I can still remember all the moves... although the guys took centre stage - they needed as much space as possible!
can someone suggest a playlist of floorfillers, tamla/n.soul for a charity disco night that I,ve been asked to do,,,any suggestions will be warmly welcomed...cheers
do a search on google, for "top 500 northern soul". someone compiled a list a few years back, but it's got hours worth of material. it also lists the compilation CDs you can find them on. THEN, invite me down to boogie coz it sounds like a wicked idea...
As Eccles derome and I sneaked in through the back door of the International Soul Club at the Preston Top Rank as 12yr olds this was the record we were Greated with! As Noca played it, both Eccles And I thought WOW as we watched these 19yr olds dancing it was that moment that the spirit of Northern soul entered us. And to this day when I hear Dobie Gray I can flick back to that wonderful moment.
This is a true Northern soul classic, as memory serves, I believe the British made it a smash through the Northern soul circuit, corect me if I'm wrong Ian but, I believe it was a huge hit in the uk and then the usa, sadly Dobie is no longer with us, we shall never forget his work. Great work Ian, your fans are many !!!

I have to say--God bless my British brothers and sisters for recognizing what a great soul song this is and bringing it out of the shadows. The Northern Soul movement has revived more good music than anything I can think of in the last 30 years. Too bad you guys couldn't have dropped into Maverick's Flat in '69--you would have been in heaven.
Wow I was surprised to find this, It makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time I hear It reminds me of the wheatly taverns in East London and Dave Brown especialy the "livley Lady" "Spooky Lady" and the Goldmine Canvey Island
