As someone whose done some research into historical European martial arts, i can say that they were just as sophisticated as many of the Eastern ones we now think of. You have to remember that these were people who lived and died by the sword and many of the underlying principles of staying alive were similar.

@bloodylogos this episode makes no sense, because for the alteration to take place originally someone would have had to give him the information the/set this up the first time. i guess they're not showing that universe, because it would be very different, but it'd also be impossible/needless: A) to get the gargoyles unfrozen to get the other half, he would need to be rich already, if he was rich already, he would have no reason to go back in time and set this all up. or am i missing something

ONE theory of time travel is that you can go back and change things, like in the Back to the Future movies. A different theory says this is impossible, so that if you do go back in time and try to change something, whatever you do is exactly what you did before, that you had always gone back and done that thing, like in the Terminator movies.

Well yeah. But when ever Tony's life is threatened, he usually tries to distract his opponent until his suit arrives or he can get to it. Like what he did when he fought whiplash in the second movie. Whenever Xanatos' life is in danger, he will try to use fist combat to deter his opponent.
