okay in chicago area you do not need anything to own a police scanner for one..... and for two chicago police dose have some special units that have 4 officers in a patrol car....... also chicago pd dose not say a damn thing to anyone about carrying the radio unless you claim urrself as an officer of any kind

@abatesecurity Actually it's not like a special patrol. I think it's crime investigation unit. As of unmarked police car, and also they didn't had any uniforms on them. At least it looks like civil dress.

@Jabbajawz4life where i live (poland in europe) police scanners, radios are illegal to use by ordinary civilians, even listening to police frequency from a cb radio (cb's are widely used in poland, not only in the u.s. im a user) can be fined.

@hohomgl "Public Safety Broadcast" allow in some states. Here in Canada, all police broadcasts are encrypted so we can't get them over a scanner anymore.

It's not a police radio, it's a scanner, which only RECEIVES radio frequencies, but can't transmit. In most places this is legal, though some states have made them illegal because they don't want you listening in on police traffic.

Police Departaments also make legall public internet feeds with police radio, whic you can listen live and for free. I will say again: "listened", so If you will start transmit something through police radio channel, that will be stated as illegal police radio channel messing up/spamming say however you want.

Actually, when police are chasing the suspect, example car chase, they can wen't to encrypted channel on their radio's, which ones the criminals can't listen. At least to do that, they need to have high-end decryptors which cost a lot. All my family is working in police, so that's the reason why i know all this stuff if you don't believe me, (just in case).
