gosh please stop playing "we are teh champions" song...its sucks...can't believe lakers played when they won the finals...and why did the d backs change their i colors from purple to red? i thought they would stick with their colors after winning world series
I first thought it was Destiny for the Yankees to win just 54 days after 9/11. But, Destiny had been set way before 2001 and it was for Arizonia to win, but Destiny changed course after 9/11 and gave NY hope and something to help them forget. The year before was the Subway Series, giving NY a last good year between two NY teams? and the yankees winning in 96', 98', 99', and 00'. Think about it...Destiny?
hey im as big of a yankee fan as they come and other fans can talk as much shit as they want in my opinion this was the best world series ever and even though they lost games 4 and 5 really brought a city that was attacked to a whole new level and made everything feel normal again but the dbacks deserved this series it was an awsome thing to watch
Tony Womack was on the D-Backs? He hit the tying run in. Soriano and Jeter were in the infield when Luis Gonzales hit the winning run in with that bloop.
Yeah but if Jeter was to run after it he would've ran strait into Womack and it would be a basehit anyway, but the true blame does go to Joe Torre. The only thing I am just really pissed about is again when Mo threw to second and Jeter was about to catch it David Dellucci slid strait into Jeter and knocked him over, and the ball goes into the outfield, if Jeter made that one play the Yankees probebly would've won.
Rivera through it wide of second though. Jeter would have had to come off the base to get that ball anyways. Jeter was reaching for it on the right field side of the base, which is where Dellucci was coming from first, and that is why Dellucci ran into him.
I am a huge d'backs fan, but if I had been the Yankees, I would have played the infield halfway. Even if Womack hadn't been in the way, the ball would have sailed over Jeter's head. The ball left the infield to quickly for jeter to reach it.
this is my most favorite WS of all time. being a fan of both the padres and dbacks, it was gr8. i was disapointed when the padres lost in 1998, and I was glad when the dbacks avenged the padres.
Not to mention Womack was standing in Jeter's way, he could of ran over and caught that bloop fly but Womack was litterally like blocking him, oops. Yeah should the D-backs have one that series? Maybe.
5star sounds a little bitter!....trying to come up with excuses why the Yankees lost....you guys were outscored the whole series...Dbacks owned the Yankees hands down!
i was 7 when arizona won and well i live in california and when you're 7 and read in the guiness book of world records that the yankees have 26 championships you just think they're the best but now that i'm 15 and look back on it,that series was a championship deserved by arizona and it was a great series
I am a huge D-backs fan and know that they truly deserved to win, not those yankees who have so many WS rings because they bought them. I almost lost hope toward the end of game 7 when they took the lead but to me, when they came back, it was one of the most miraculous moments I have ever seen!
Funny u say bought...It was stienbrenner and the yankees who said that that the 2001 Dbacks bought there selves a world series. That years pay roll for the dbacks was pretty high so don't come talking about how the yankees are the ones buying world series rings cause its obvious the D backs bought them selves rings that year as well.
I was watching this on t.v so I know what happened. Okay look so Mariano Rivera struck out the damn side in the 8th, then came the 9th. Mark Grace got a lead-off base hit, simple enough. But then came Damian Miller's bunt. Mo didn't throw anything away, Derek Jeter was about to catch it but David Dellucci (Pinch Runner) slid between his legs and knocked him over, asshole. I saw it, Jeter was about to catch it but Dellucci slid under him and knocked him over, but I guess that's legal huh? >.>
Then Jay Bell's bunt (yeah Mr. "omg I scored the winning run") easy out at 3rd base but Scott Brosius could of thrown to first to get a double play, instead he held onto the ball, wtf. Then yeah Tony Womack hit that double that tied the game but read what I said before, if that out at 2nd was made like it should have been, the game might not of been tied. So then comes Gonzalez who hits a tiny blooper that would have been easily catch-able if Jeter was in his regular positon.
i am the biggest dback fan in the world and the series should have been over in 5, amazing world series. i reall believe god helped for game 4 and 5, im from ny, and they really needed something like that, as much as it pained me to watch, all that said, dbacks won, go dbacks!!!!!!!!!!!
You're absolutely right. And for years thats kept me up at night. They sucked after that year. All those guys had really good years, IN THE SAME YEAR. I guess it was kind of a fluke. Or maybe I just don't like to think about how the Yankees could've won that series, but didn't
Had in not been for randy johnson and curt shilling this team wouldin't have even made the playoffs. After that year they had one more doesen't year in 2002 but after that that organization went down hill. The yankees however stayed competive for years to come and they still are to this day.
great pitching wins world series. Ever since the 1996-2000 run, I don't know why my yankees have figured that out (and signing Kevin Brown, Javier Vazquez, Randy Johnson, Jon Lieber, and the always injured Carl Pavano do not count). I'm praying to God that CC and AJ will do great things in pinstripes
Oh and not to mention Grace's leadoff single was nothing but a flare to center field, I guess the D-backs are famous for bloop fly balls huh? That's how they beat the Cardinals in the NLDS too with a bloop fly ball by Womack.
the dbacks truly were the better team that series, but didn't you feel kind of bad for beating us after 9/11. But games 4 and 5 were just truly spectacular
best world series of all time, i am a truly die hard yankees fan like so many others, and my heart breaks when i think of this series. i cant say the d backs played better, they won, but they did not play better, and the yanks deserved to win that series, not arizona. greatest series of games of any sport.
um, when you hit .187 for the series (dbacks only hit about .223) you don't deserve to win. It would've been great for the city and everything, but they played better. Even though it was mostly lucky hits, its very impressive to comeback against Mo in the 9th inning (sorry for bringing that up btw)
Well I went at this without stats, like you brought out, and that's respectable. Thanks for not just being an idiot like many others, seriously. Both teams hit incredibly low averages. I think the Yanks were a better and more rounded team. There was luck in the comeback, it was mostly MO's wrongdoing more than D Backs good comback, we can agree on that (ie the erroe). And the DBacks pitching consisted of Randy and Curt, who are great, but nobody else. Yankees were a more rounded team.
I'm a die-hard yankees fan. Why would I be an idiot? But that year the Dbacks had Luis Gonzalez (57 homers, like 140 rbi), Mark Grace, Tony Womback, Craig Counsel, Matt Williams, plus some of the best starting pitching in baseball. While the yankees did have all the players that made them great in the 1990s (Jeter, O'Neil, Martinez, Posada, Bernie etc) the dbacks had more overall talent
No. And I didn't notice you were a Yankee fan because you said, "You hit .183", I didn't notice you were a Yankees fan, because I always refer to my teams as "we", but that's just me. And no, the D Backs did not have more overall talent. That is why they never went anywhere past 2001. Craig Counsel is a joke, Tony Womack is a joke, and the others were on the verge of being washed up. That being said, they won it anyways, when the yankees deserved it.
ya, they're jokes now, but back in 2001, they weren't. the diamondbacks did deserve the win and they got it. but anyway, even if you think the yankees should have won, so be it. whether u like it or not, theres nothing u can do about it.
@yankees032778 You guys won the previous three World Series. I know it was just after 9/11, but from a purely athletic standpoint, I was so happy to see the D-Backs win. They had such an incredible season, and they deserved it.
i believe that the ghosts from ground zero were in yankee stadium for games 4 and 5. even though we lost, we won all three in new york, and after that, nothing else mattered.
The song they played when Brosius hit the homer in Game 5 is (The Who, "We won't get fooled again"). They played it as a spoof because that has been our home run theme (The Dbacks) for 10 years, they did it cuz we played the Sinatra (New York) song after games 1 and 2. . .
I found out, maybe you're talking about something else because I found the video and its "can you feel it?" by maya the tamperer. i have the video on my computer but youtube wont let me upload it

this Series made me happy so much!
there will never be a Series like that ever again!
so unique because it was one of the last underdog series we would ever see and it made everybody feel good, since it was after the 9-11 attacks
GOD BLESS THE D'BACKS! =D
