  • thumbs up for a sax solo in classical music! well done shostakovich

  • playing this in youth symphony :D

  • 1:54 the trombones. best

  • What's up with the army guys behind the orchestra? Are they there to shoot anyone who misses a note?

  • Love this piece! Performing to it for colorguard!

  • That clarinet part is ridiculous! No wonder my pinky hurts >.<...

  • Our band playin this song this year in Symphonic band and 1st trumpet aint no joke.!

  • I feel so accomplished that our band got triple superior on this song :D

  • I feel so accomplished that our band got triple superior on this song :D

  • I feel so accomplished that our band got triple superior on this song :D

  • ugh why the piss cant i thumbs up this video? ive watched it so many times and i click thumbs up every time only to be disappointed.

  • omg the chords in here are just beasty i love it!!!the end could have been better though

  • I loved playing that first trumpet excerpt after the tempo changes in high school sinfonietta.

  • Speed of the puma!

  • that is blazingly fast

  • God I love shostakovich

  • PLAYING THIS IN YOUTH SYMPHONY

    SO FUN :D

  • My Holiday Orchestra is playing this, but faster. And the Piccolo part is a bastard. Love it though xD

  • My great aunt went to school with him in the USSR. They used to call him "Yevi."

  • @madamerotten Why is that? :)

  • Such a great idea, but couldn't the intonation have been a LITTLE better? So much potential for a fantastic performance...

  • @Victrevor2 the "problem" here (I don't see it as one) is that this recording lacks the compression that our ears are used to in recorded music.

  • Such an incredible performance of such a great piece of work. Bravo!

  • WHOA they are cooking at the fast part! LOVE IT!

  • I play the Clarinet solo in my school band, and there is no way in HELL i can go this fast. holy jeebus.

  • I play the Clarinet solo in my school band, and there is no way in HELL i can go this fast. holy jeebus.

  • We are playing this at school as well and personally i think this tempo's too fast.... for example around 2:20 it sounds much more fitting to play it slower to let the cellos express their high part not just rush through everything and I LOVE THE CONDUCTOR'S AFRO :O!!! I feel that the musicians while they play the notes right and crescendo and decrescendo etc right...they have no musicality and feeling towards the piece of their own, only doing whats written on the page.

  • @azntrancedj

Yeah, it's pretty blazing fast. But melodic lines needn't be slow to be expressive. Think of that part in "one" rather than a "fast two". All music, when played at presto/prestissimo tempi flows better when the agogic stress is less often, creating more of a breathing and freeing feeling. I wouldn't say these guys have no musicianship - they just play fast. Ain't nothin wrong with that.

  • We're playing this song, and our teacher is playing it a little slower than this guy. And to be honest, it sounds better slower than faster at certain parts.

  • i dont care much for your conducting

  • This is lacking in quality because of tempo.

  • I remember playing the timpani for this one year... a lovely piece. Fantastic job :) this has definitely lifted my spirits for a day.

  • Actually,Shostakovich composed this music with the joyous knowledge of Stalin`s death on his mind.Stalin died in 1953(on the exact day as Prokofiev!).Shostakovich was beyond himself with exuberance-it jumps out at you in this piece.Interestingly and sadly, I`ve never seen one single photo of Shostakovich smiling(or one of Bela Bartok for that matter).

  • why am i not surprised that those soldiers are terrible musicians?

  • Bass Bone FTW

  • haha at the conductors jew fro

  • How S. managed to create such a sunny, jubilant work under Stalin's terror thumb is beyond me---its the power of the creative spirit, I guess. For those who say--'don't like Shost.'--I saylisten to this tuneful, fun, spirited overture!! Its catchy!!

  • Great music, bombastic and festive. The only Shostakovich work that could be played by the Boston or Cincinnati Pops! An easy more accessible composition style found in many of his late works.

  • Dang beginning is pretty strong but I'm sorry to say my high school band played the ending much better... clarinet solo is good tho :)

  • Sight read the euphonium part for this in class today. I really should have practiced. It's going to be fun though.

  • I totally agree, clar39. It's a good recording until it gets to the brass feature towards the end...I have my own lamentations as a woodwind about standing during brass features, but meh, it's not important. Anyway, YES, they lose it in that section.

  • Wow! They really play this fast. I love it!

  • love it..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;)

  • We're taking this to Carnegie in March... we just got it before we went on break. and I play first clarinet... yikes lol

  • @chreckit Congratulations!!

  • This is being performed in A major, the original key. (The wind ensemble arrangement is lowered to Ab.)

  • What an oustanding piece of music!!!!

  • Impressed by the technique but offended by the pitch problems.

  • The key is A major

  • region 12!

  • i love the excitement the higher than usual tempo brings, but i don't like the lack of clarity in the 16th notes

  • 3:20

  • playing this in windensemble mad epic

  • I love this piece. i dont know if i posted this already or not, but my computer is acting up. haha. But I ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY LOVE THIS PIECE!!!! THE CONDUCTOR!!! YOU GOTTA LOVE 'IM!! LOL. SO MUCH LIFE, HE LOOKS LIKE HE'S ENJOYING IT!!! I love the whole group. ok, so they have some mistakes, but eat the meat, spit out the bones lol :)

  • Allstate viola at 3:55

  • @JumpDownandup Thank you lol All state texas right? xD I'm from Region 5 ^.^

  • Muito bom, ja toquei e adorei hehehe

  • What key is this in? The music I have for it is in A-flat major, but I tried playing along and it is obviously not the same key.

  • @Scifinutthrawn Its the original, A major.

  • @Scifinutthrawn

    A major

  • @Scifinutthrawn Maybe it's kinda late but FYI Dmitri wrote the Festive Overture in A major.

  • super

  • soper

  • mmmmm trumpet fanfare^^..but yea, inntonation gets a bit iffy at the end...still, always love a meaty trumpet section:P

  • i don't know whats more exhilarating , watching an amazing sports team play or a beautiful sounding orchestra perform.

  • omg i heared a mistake around 3:00 but overall this was a great peice!! our band is planning on playing this im so scared!!!

  • GREAT SONG! but, man, towards the end the tone and overall sound of the orchestra was just bad

  • allstate excerpt at 3:19

  • @thekingmoss what state you live in?

  • @gameboykid3003 hey I live in texas

  • a very big brass section !!!!! :-)

    i like it

  • god it sounds like theyre sqeezing the heck out of it at the end

but i love this song hahaha

  • All state at 3:21

  • @royflores09 hate to brag but we beat y'all at honor band taping(dobie high school) but I heard you guys play and yes you did beast it

  • whoa!!! THis is our first movement in our high school band marching show this year!!:)

  • @marcusag12 Oh well its my third movement. Whats the name of your show?

  • @marcusag12 you guys play this in a marching show must be heard to memorize all that.

  • @marcusag12 its our third. our first is uninvited.

  • @marcusag12 its our third.

  • @marcusag12 its our 3rd

  • @marcusag12 Really? This is our third movement this year! Our show is called Visionary.

  • Overall Excellent (II). Only because of the tone quality towards the end from the brass section seemed to blar rather much. Almost sounds out of character.

  • The energy is definitely definitely in the right place, but the intonation -- really?!

I think my poor ears are bleeding T_T

What a shame -- I adore the speed of this performance -- I think it would have been truly spectacular had the brass not gone way out of control in pitch and tone quality. There's a difference between exciting and blasting, I'm afraid.

  • What exciting music, I love Shostakovich

  • I'm playing this piece in symphony orchestra! It seems a lot harder when you have to learn it in a week. Rehearsal starts in 2 hours. Anyways, the musicians themselves are okay, but they're real strength is staying together.

  • What a terrible mistake by the 2nd trumpetplayer at 0:16!

    He's a bit early I guess..

  • good! but trumpets xD

  • 3:21 All-State Texas

  • so beautiful !!

  • love it!! try playing this with a Bb instead of an A clarinet.... not an easy task! XD

  • @LaMusiquePourMoi oooh the fingerings! lol

  • I guess some good things did come out of the Soviet Union after all.....

  • this orchestra is the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra by the way :)

  • I think adding the extra brass was a bad idea

  • destroy that terrible snare drum!!!

  • @vmi3301 you mean destroy the snare drum player. heck, get rid of the whole percussion section and get a drum machine. god i hate percussionists.

  • Good God, somebody put a muzzle on that bass trombone.

  • Tell me that wasnt amazingg!.. my breath was stolen

  • Genialne...

  • It doesn't sound right at all at around 2:20

  • Ahhhhhh!!! I freakin' LOVE the work of Dmitri Shostakovich!!! He was a musical beast! My band played this peace this past year. We tore it up! We beasted on it, but not like these guys, but we did really good. :) North Shore Senior High School!!

  • =( eeeeeek trombones at 0:27 ....

  • oh lord the bass trombones at the beginning <3

  • Yall better get it :)

  • I am playing it now with one orchestra from Bulgaria, and i think this is a real pleasure to be played.

  • I am playing it now with one orchestra from Bulgaria, and i think this is a real pleasure to be played.

  • very exciting and beautiful!!

  • 好振奮人心的樂曲,聽著聽著突然覺得有種心跳加速的感覺,出色的樂團,出色的演出,精采!!安可!安可!

  • Love this song we played it in College 20 years ago.

  • the baritone part on the band version is crazy!!

  • a little scream-y at the end for my liking =/

  • 3rd/bass bone should take a chill pill..

  • this is not like shostakovich... at all. this is so much more fluffy and cherry than usual. tipicaly when i think of shostakovich i think of death... or opression or something like that. maybe it was to save him from stalin, like to change his image

  • Very nice recording, Snare was waaaay to loud on 3:07, I could not hear the actual melody. Oy, yea, the intonation on the maestoso could've been better.

I got to admit this is perhaps one of the best recordings i've heard thus far! =D

  • Do the cellos EVER get that C# right?

  • horn part sopunds awesome! if i get into summer camp we might be playing this. cant wait!

  • horn part sopunds awesome! if i get into summer camp we are playing this. cant wait!

  • The fanfare parts at the beginning and the towards the end are out of control. The trumpets and trombones need to stop blasting it because they sound terrible. But the rest of it was great.

  • I don't mean any offense to the trumpet players, they are terrific players, but playing that loud (5:00) does not seem to be working out for them, they are tremendously out of tune.

  • sounds like the pure sound of heaven

  • They're playing this incredibly fast :|

The strings are also really out of tune and it's driving me mad D:

but their speed is nice but they're sort of compensating

  • Intonation is terrible :/

  • I just love this piece! Full of life, happy... =D I personally don't understand why some people don't like it... =) Anyway

  • Oh jeez too fast for my violin fingers D:

I was invited to go perform this on friday with the Honor Orchestra of America. Time to practice.

  • perfect piccolo part omg

  • Brilliant.

  • ttrombones sound kickass

  • fucking awesome

  • what a boring interpretation of the opening but the rest of the performance is exciting

  • my band is playing this song and i love it!! And hearing this made me love it even more:)

  • my band is playing the wind symphony arrangement for this song so we can play it in Japan!

  • Awful, just awful...

Well. That's a bit harsh. Individually, they seem like very good musicians. But together, this is an unprecedented intonation disaster. I just keep cringing the whole way through! Particularly bad spots include (but are not limited to!) 0:25, the entire section that begins at 2:12, and Oh God--the fanfare at 4:57...

    o.O

  • the shit..i cant imagine playing this

  • @2:20 - Ouch.

  • Intonation goes out the window at the end, chord balance is completely out of whack in the last minute, and for all the control shown at the beginning, a complete disregard for clean attacks on the last seven notes of the performance. Extremely disappointing to hear spots be so clean and well-rehearsed, only to find spots that a good high school orchestra or band plays much cleaner.

  • Love the Clarinet Part Band or Orchestra part - Orchestra part the clarinet's get a little bit of rest though :) Strings are nice :)

  • i love the clarinet part :)

  • exciting, but tone and pitch go OUT the window at the end!

  • @clar39 im sure it was the strings' fault! (played trombone for this one) :p

  • @clar39 wouldn't be russian without that :)

  • @clar39 They definitely go out of tune at the unison section at 2:13. I assume it is the viola section. I also agree that that this performance was extremely exciting. I like the tempo and drive.

  • @clar39

I wouldn't say it was at the end that struck me but somewhere in the middle. I heard SO much dissonance in pitch around that area.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheKero12345 no he didn't. this was written in 1954, six years before he was forced to join the party.

  • i disagree, i think that these guys played better than the '86 recording of the USSR symphony.

  • @Jsolle121 I havent heard the '86 recording, but this one gets very distorted when brass plays, specifically T-bones, especially in the beginning and end

  • oh jeeze... this brings back memories. My old high school band played this for the first movement of one of our field shows. We didn't play the whole thing obviously 'cause of the time limit.

  • awesome!!....fantastic!!!

  • Simply brilliant and the best of Shostakovich. Very fun to play if you have the privilege to play in a decent orchestra :D

  • Not too bad! A few note time issues, more so the syncopation amongst the sections of the band, but overall, I'd like to see any of you play this, and as well as they did. Not an easy feat XD. Great playing band!!

  • it was good :) ... well, ok, at about 5:00 the trumpets r a bit out of tune, but it is a hard piece 2 play. i agree with trumpetdudeman07, shostakovich is brilliant... i love this piece. <3 I'm playing it at the moment!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • Man, either my speakers suck or there is some major balance problems at 5:00........

It's js too much that it's gross!

  • my HIGH SCHOOL band might play this for our march concert, i have to play the clarinet solo, very hard, along with aegean festival overture

  • this performance was very good but when the offstage brass comes in the trumpets are pretty out of balance and out of tune. I agree. lol.

  • jesus.. is this a professional band?

  • did you just call this a band.................

  • No, it's an orchestra. hurrrr

  • JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJJA from minute 5:00 to the end its HORRIBLE!!!!!!, In fact the whole piece is awful

  • I'm sure YOUR orchestra plays it better

  • Mmhm, I dunno why you guys are complaining. I think they are good, nah? Though they play a little too fast but I really like the song

  • ummmmmmm...... gross at 5:00

  • trumpets are very flat.. I hope this isn't a professional band

  • at the last poco meno moso is where it starts sounding shitty

  • 4:16 man he is dum...

  • @muorsic yeh, he was dum for turning the page instead of using x-ray vision which all violinist have. God!

  • i can't WAIT to play that clarinet solo one day!!!

  • Holy Blaring Brasses Batman!! I love Shostakovic! He KNOWS how to use brasses in his works.

  • A fine example of Godzilla eating Tokyo

  • This is unbelieveably bad! Not together and out of tune! I can't believe this is a professional orchestra! SLOPPY!!!!! So unbalanced! It's like teenagers playing as fast as they can with all abandon! HORRIBLE!

  • delicious!

  • i dont like transcriptions of this piece, orchestra is needed for its successs

  • My Concert band in high school

    had to sight read

    this peice once.

    Sight reading this is brutal.

  • 5:01 whoa. That was utterly painful.
