  • I'm curious about the funding for these grand Presby churches in and around Pittsburgh. Was it Carnegie money? Didn't think he was very religious. Mellon money? Frick money or some other steel or coal baron? Also, as previously commented by others, this is very high church for the church of John Knox and Scottish simplicity and rectitude. I don't think many Ch. of Scotland congos go this high up the candle across the Pond.

  • @brassspitoon Presbyterian Churches benefited from the generosity of families with well-known names such as Heinz, Westinghouse & Mellon - and others not as famous. In addition to steel, aluminum & glass, considerable Pittsburgh wealth resulted from banking, manufacturing, railroads & oil. Carnegie was nominally Swedenborgian but donated money for pipe organs to churches of many denominations.

  • I almost thought this was an Anglican/Episcopal Church service... the only thing that gave away that it was not, was that the clerics were wearing Geneva Gowns (preaching robes) as opposed to Albs and stoles (which are Anglican/Episcopal Eucharistic vestments)

  • @StellarTwilight33 Well, we do kid ourselves about being "High Church Presbyterian" Our neighbor in this end of Pittsburgh, East Liberty Presbyterian has an even more formal processional with a beedle. Ralph Adams Cram claimed he could convert East Liberty for a high pontifical mass in 15 minutes.

  • I am breathless just listening to the hymn here! Is there something about the acoustics that require it to be so fast? I would think a broader tempo would work better in that grand space. Thanks for letting me inquire.

  • @jorobinson I can't vouch for the accuracy of the tempo as recorded on the video feature of my still camera. In general, I think our processionals have a brisk pace. I looked in vain to see if there was another version archived at the church's website, to compare the tempo. Sorry I can't comment knowledgably.

  • Hello

Im a people who live in trois rivier in canada.

Every sunday I go to presbyterian church in my villige but one day ,one elder in the church tell me go out from the church . because my english is not good. and he will introduce to me another church where is not english spoken.

Is he right to tell me out from church and go to another church ?

I think that even i can not speak well in english but i can go to church in jesus .

    Please tell me your opinions.

  • @fallaziyo The important thing about a curch is that you can worship God "in spirit and in truth." If you can do so, even though worship is not in your native language, you should feel welcome and others there should welcome you. Unless the language barrier leads to a serious distraction for you or others, you should worship where God leads you. The elder may have tried to be gracious concerning language difficulties, but may also have misunderstood your situation. God bless you in worship.

  • can you tell me about the organ? who made it, how many ranks?

It sounds like a very grand organ

  • PS - you may not want to be away from your home church on Palm Sunday, but this is to be our recessional hymn that day

  • Thank you so much for the information. I will check the church's site regarding upcoming hymns. And thanks for the iletting me know that Shadyside will be singing #483 on Palm Sunday. I just may visit that day if not before. I see Dr. Barnes is having Lenten vespers starting 2-24. I am planning to attend. Again, thanks for your exceptional kindness.

  • A VERY Episcopal Presbyterian Church!!

Here in Ireland the Presbyterians dont have robe choirs or any alter area. Just a minister and a pulpit - very plain stuff!

  • Yes, if there is such a thing, we are "High Church Presbyterian"

  • Wonderful, who knows, maybe your church will rediscover Apostolic succession and rejoin the mainstream Church :-)

  • Please provide more videos! I get the cassette tapes every week and listen "religiously." I first discovered Shadyside on KDKA back in the early 1960's, and years ago secured a copy of the church history. Visited there (on a Tuesday) a few years ago & was given a tour by Susie. I hope to return someday on a Sunday. A video of the current renovation would be intriguing as well. (glad the sanctuary is remaining the same.)

  • Delighted to have you worship with us - even via tape. I will get more video. Susie, now retired, was the welcoming voice and face of the church. Please do visit us on a Sunday - I would like to greet you.

  • What a great treat to see this worship service in a favorite church. I listened to the radio broadcasts late on Sunday Nights here in Oklahoma on KDKA and always wanted to see what I was listening to. Now I have. Thanks for putting this on for us.

  • You are most welcome. Its a privilege & blessing to worship at Shadyside. Hope to post more & better quality video with new camera.

You can see more photos & read about architecture at my shadysidelantern website - see URL in info with video. Chris Pardini promises to write a feature for the site about the organ.

Glad to know there are listeners in Oklahoma. I helped with effort to get us back on KDKA (1020AM) on Sundays at 11:00 PM.

  • The old saying was, "Pittsurgh is where the Presbyterians are densest."

  • Ah, Pittsburgh, the most Presbyterian city on Earth!
