  • I was only 12 when this song first came out. It's just one of the many songs that I first heard on WFIL Radio right here in Philadelphia. Forty-two years later, I still love this song.

  • Great !!!!!!

  • Great song no matter who sings it, this band, Black Sabbath, Tina Turner, all of them are great.

  • Great song.

  • When I first heard that the sabbath version was a cover, I thought this version would suck, I was sadly mistaken. This kicks serious ass

  • Classic song. The Sabbath version also kicks serious ass!

  • did not know that it was a cover by sabbath, but it worked

  • crow had great bass lines in each song. That`s why they rule!

  • I think we need to keep in mind this was recorded in 1969 before Black Sabbath and Metallica or Led Zeppelin, some pioneering shtuff, man.I can only imagine what kind of music was put there at that time ?

  • great music.. just great!!!! XD

  • My friends grandpa played guitar for this band.

  • These guys were the prototype 'one-hit wonder'. That's not a put-down, either; better to have one hit than none!

  • these dudes kick ass.

  • * * * * *

  • i love the black sabbath cover and this

  • Strange...but very good ! Like it !

    Thanks for the post !

  • You're welcome! Listen to Cottage Cheese and Slow Down by this band.

  • the sabbath version is much better, this version sounds like an elo number

  • ELO? What have you been smoking?

  • @rickyon well with all the jazzy shit in it makes it soundf like elo, plus i dont smoke, never have

  • ELO does not sound jazzy. If anything this sounds like a mixture of Chicago and Sugarloaf! The smoking reference was a metaphor for "you are out of your mind"!

  • @rickyon go listen to evil woman or 10538 Overture by elo, which sounds like chicago who you mentioned, and nope not out of my mind just stating what i can hear

  • I know ELO and they have a style and a sound and this ain't it! You are stating what you hear but it is not what most of the rest of us hear.

  • @rickyon & a littlle Burton Cummings & a little Three Dog Night, + a pinch of Ides of March.

  • Oh shut up, the song's great. Amen Corner had horns and trumpets and yet people loved 'em. Beatles and Kinks too, and they didn't become Jazz bands for it. Black Sabbath's cover version is awesome, but this one's not behind it.

Insolent bored fools who've nothing to do but to post stupid coments on the net without any real arguments to back them up...

  • This was the heaviest rock song on AM radio at the time. And The Raspberries "Go All The Way".

  • The trumpets are totaly unnecessary and ruin the whole song! This is rock, not jazz!

  • The brass was the idea of the record company. When I heard this song in 1972 there were no horns on it. The record company thought that they could sell more records with the horns. Oh, by the way,Rock can have horns and even with the horns this is still a rock song and not jazz.

  • @rickyon

It's don't matter! The Sabbath version still kicks this versions ass!!!!

  • You just proved HippyTesla's point!

  • Dude, this version blows big time! It's nothing compared to Sabbath! The Sabbath version KICKS ASS, especialy with Ozzy on vocals!!!!

I'm gonna go listen to the Sabbath version now!

  • You must be a youngster. 1st of all, this does not "blow big time". If it did then why did Sabbath cover it? 2nd, Ozzy Osbourne is never going to be on anyone's best vocalist list. 3rd, what's up with dissing something that is legitimate and obviously good just because you like a different version better? Can't they both be good? Is your musical taste the only one that is valid? I think not. Why not just listen to the Sabbath version and stop leaving comments here?

  • Where the hell do you think Sabbath got the sound from?

  • Exactly!

  • This was like the Nickelback of today and Sabbath was like System Of A Down or somethin

  • @Frikzter Comparing Sabbath to a shitty Nu-Metal band that should only be made fun of constantly for being so bad?

    That's a paddlin'

  • @ThazuaBlackarrow Shamefully yes! I am! My apologies, the gods of Rock pardon me of my sin.

  • The horns make it sound a little too american-evening-show-ish. And the singer sounds like a pastor gone rock

  • Suck's balls stacked next to sabbath. Period.

  • You have the right to your opinion however wrong it may be!

  • I heard a cover of this but it was called "Evil Man" with a female vocalist. I wish I knew who did it, it was a fabulous cover rock/funk cover.

  • @TheForgottenFlesh Ike & Tina Turner, from the "Come Together" LP.

  • @TheForgottenFlesh

LOL dude! That's funny as hell!

  • yes this song was awesome when it first come out and was played on the radio a lot.yes i wonder what happened to CROW?they still around?yes the music was awesome with the horn section and sounded a little like CHICAGO! the radio these days are not playing no good stuff no more! yes if CROW would have recorded this song DIGITALLYor DOLDY RECORDING the song would sound even better!

  • im an old dude and a sabbath fan since 1970,and i know they did this song on their first album but still remember that it was a (cover)song , just could not remember the origional group (crow) until the wife kicked in and found it here.

good thing i kept her for all these year's lol

  • in FACT the sabbath's version of evil woman was impoosed by their manager,...some people say that you can hear Ozzy jarring his teeth in this song to show his anger

thats why they never play evil woman in the live concerts

  • Best

    version

    EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Crow was pretty big here in MN. They have a couple of artifacts displayed in the Minnesota Music Cafe. Honestly I first heard the Black Sabbath version because Black Sabbath are my favorite band, but for me to find out that Crow had written it and that they were based in MN is pretty cool.

  • Sabbath's version is already exciting, this original version is inspiring. Great song!!

  • great song. great power melody. anyone who does not like this song should go back to their 90's radio station

  • Actually the record label forced Sabbath to record this song as their first single. But I do believe they liked the song to begin with. All of the versions (this and Sabbath's 2 versions are all equally fantastic:) )

  • I first heard this when I was a kid. I was running happy on all cylinders and playing on my soundtrack were songs like this. Thanks for the upload and the trip back. Take it easy.--Kirk

  • You're welcome Kirk.

  • Dave Wagner is my second cousin. (my moms cousin, so second cousin, right?) just met him like a year ago at a show he played with my uncle (moms bro) look up mike Waggoner and the bops, same family, different spelling don't know why. Song "baby, baby" is the easiest orig to find by them.

  • @tHECOMINGRACE very cool.

  • Comment removed

  • @tHECOMINGRACE I knew your cousin, and the Wiegland brothers and Kink the keyboard player. I actually knew them when they were called South 40 (after the famous bikers highway in Minnesota). And those guys were all hard core bikers, and had some pretty cool bikes. Their old band house was the second house from the end on 22nd and Lyndale Avenue South. Now it is almost like a parking lot both the houses on the corner have been demolished.

  • the sabbath version sounds like it sampled just the horns

  • 2 people dislike this classic. Probably 2 evil women. Great song, thanks for the post.

  • You're welcome.

  • @Planktontwo lol...They were probably thinking it was E.L.O....lol

  • @tegrimm LOL probably true. Though I like the ELO version too.

  • @Planktontwo

ELO's Evil Woman is a completely different song.

  • I saw Crow in 1970 in Rapid City SD I wish I could get that album on digital...

  • Go to their website, crowtheband.

  • @rickyon thanks. I have been looking for this for so long. This brings back some really good memories.

  • Sabbath rules!...Still rules!

  • Im a huge, if not the hugest sabbath fan, i love ozzy, dio and all the randoms. But I must say, i like crows original best. Sabbath covered it because they loved it, no need to put them down for it.

  • @jibberishass It's A compliment to crow

  • I've only just descovered that Sabs covered this. That was fun, now I'm off to find The Warning!

  • damn, both version have sick bass

  • Black sabbath and Crow rules.....ELO SUCK!!

  • @lapsiquisarcaica1 Lol shut up, ELO doesn't sing the same song. It's their own original with the same name, idiot. I think all three songs are fucking great.

  • @pjautuvas suck my dick!!! motherfucker!!! i know ELO and is a pure shit

  • @lapsiquisarcaica1 okay, big boy. You do realise it's not the same song though, right?

  • @lapsiquisarcaica1 How the hell did ELO come up in this comment forum?! No need to discuss ELO here (though they are ONE of my favorite rock bands from the '70s and not only did they do a song called "Evil Woman," Jeff Lynne also hails from Birmingham just like the Sabs). ELO was a great band for what THEY did, but that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish!

  • I dedicate this to my mom...haha xD

  • One of my first 45's back in 1969. I also liked their song Cottage Cheese.

  • I've posted that here as well as Gone,Gone,Gone and Slow Down.

  • i love the bass.

  • both versions are badass.

  • Before there was Billie Jean, there was this Evil Woman and no one sang it better than Crow. An all-time classic!

  • The Sabbath version is lame. This one has the fire and energy.

  • Plus this is the original created by this group. Originality and creativity counts for a lot because without it there would not have been the cover. The fact that they chose to cover the song says more as well don't you think?

  • @rickyon Well, I bought the 45rpm back in 69 when I was nine. Yeah, Sabbath chose a great song, but nowhere as good as the original. Sabbath chose great covers, but they never did them justice, IMO. From what I understand, Crow didn't like having the horns added to this song!

  • Good taste in music from an early age. I was 11 when I 1st saw these guys in 1969. I remember hearing this song only without the horns! I was surprised when I heard it many years later with the horns. I prefer it w/o just as you correctly stated that the band didn't like it either. Back then unless you were mega-stars you did what the record company wanted.

  • @mothra1000 covers? as in plural??

  • @rickyon Yes, when I picked up the import version of the first Sab LP many years ago I had very high hopes. But Crow's version (with or without horns) is the superior version. But, very good choice to cover this song considering Sabbath's image at that point in time.

  • @mothra1000 troll!

  • @bookworm1138 Why am I a troll? I've given kudos to both bands.

  • I was only 12 when this song came out. It was one of the many songs that I first heard on WFIL Radio here in Philadelphia.

  • The original is best. I like Sabbath, but this version is much better. The Sab version is dull and lifeless.

  • Sabbath's 1st Hit in the UK

  • The Sabbath's version sounds Better ! Ozzy rocks even if this song is also cool

  • Comment removed

  • Like that jazz-rock sound, with brass; sounds a little like BS&T, Chicago.

Lotsa bird bands then - Byrds, Yardbirds, Crow, whats the deal?

  • Times were simpler then and so much better!

  • MIKE POSNERS VERSION IS WAY BETTER

  • Apples and Oranges dude. You're retarded!

  • @rickyon haha of course its better :D

  • @DjRoGGenAndDjJELLY kay sooooo if you really are a DJ you should know that the cover of Evil Woman that Mike Posner did is an original Spooky Tooth song!

  • @DjRoGGenAndDjJELLY Evil WOman by ELO 1976

  • I was not quoting a source, I was just responding to the fact that they covered the song. If they hated it why did they cover it? I've heard 3 different stories about why they covered this song. I don't care why, I just love the group and the song!

  • Doesn't matter if the rest of the members of Black Sabbath hated Crow if Ozzy Osborne says fuckin go ahead with the song then the group will do it or Black Sabbath will not continue.

  • Ozzy said this guy on Crow was the most awesome voice he ever heard. He still say's it today.

  • That's funny because if you read the comments by luxhey you would think that they hated this band! It doesn't matter to me. I just love this song and this band!

  • man, black sabbath really didn't change much except substituting some instruments. it sounds almost the same. this guy has a better voice though.

  • Crow may have originally hated the horns, but they evidently grew to like them well enough to request horns the night I saw them in Rochester NY circa 1970. The opening act was a band from Syracuse named Jam Factory. Their trumpet and sax player joined Crow on stage for Evil Woman. What a show!

  • My very 1st concert was circa 1970 at the Baltimore Civic Center. The opener was The Jam Factory. Next was Crow (which stole the show by the way) without the horns. The headliners were Iron Butterfly. Bands did what their record company told them to do in that position back in those days. Once they got big then they could thumb their noses.

  • WOW thank god Black Sabbath covered this and made it listenable.

  • LOL! Great song tho innit. The horns screw it up. Make it sound like a James Bond theme :o)

  • @key2kingdom yeah Crow's version would have been much better without the horns coz that guy's voice is amazing.

  • sabbath version is way better

  • Evil Woman was originally recorded without the horns. The producer added the horns later to latch onto the "Chicago" sound that was hot at the time. Crow hated the final version but had no say so over the record label.

  • I know what your talking about because back when it was 1st released there was 2 versions played on the radio. I was only aware of the version without the horns and didn't hear this version until I got this "Classics" CD. I like it just fine but I prefer the version sans horns. I wish someone would post that version.

  • @rickyon kinda like super seshions with al kooper

  • its a tie b/w sabbath and crow cuz sabbath's was a heavy sound and crow's version has a jazz sound

  • Thanks for posting I thought I was the only one who remembered. It is how I tell whether a music site is any good if they have this group. The other check is the Book of the Dead by Pierre Henri.

  • You're welcome.

  • Interesting sound. I was never aware of the Sabbath's cover, but this band comes across as a heavier Blood Sweat & Tears with the horn section added. It's always nice to hear music from this era without having to hunt down a webcast station.

  • but Sabbath copied

  • actually sabbath did put this on their first album. but only on the ones sold in the UK, they eventually included it on the remastered US version but i can't find it!

  • But , the crow on the front this IS TRAILIN ! HOW FUCKIN COOL IS THAT, uh oh chill out .. Straighten the fuck up ,,.

  • This version is aimed a bit more at the charts but accualy sounds a bit more deep purpleish huh? Which had a much fuller sound because of keyboards i guess , power trios were in more (or in sound) FM , wich i dont remember sabbath getting much if any AM play, where deep purple did,

  • According to the liner notes in the new Deluxe Edition, they did not like this song but their arms were twisted into doing it by management so they could be ahead of the single once it was released in the UK. And I agree with some others: Sabbath's version is much more enjoyable.

  • very nice song!

  • this sucks Sabbath did 10 times better

  • Sabbath liked it so much the did a cover!

  • @rickyon agreed its not that bad xD but i do like sabbaths version more haha

  • @rickyon im srry to say this but Sabbath hated it, or at least they didn't like it, they got tricked into doing it because of the producer...

  • Give me a link to this info and I will believe it. Until then I have to doubt what you say.

  • @rickyon I have been looking for a link and i cant find one, but i can write you the exact words. I know it because i've read I Am Ozzy, and in there it says: "Anyway, Tony Hall said he thought we were "a great little blues band", but that we needed a debut single - even though bands like ours rarely put out singles in those days. He played us this song called "Evil Woman" by an American group called Crow, and asked if we wanted to cover it. He could tell we weren't that into the To Be Contiued

  • @rickyon Contiued. idea, so he suggested we coulde make the guitars heavier. We still didn't really want to do it, but Tony offered to pay for some time at Trident Studios in Soho, so we thoguht, Fuck it, why not?"... so maybe not directly tricked but at least they didn't want to do it... I dont know if this is proof enough for you but i can also tell you the page and chapter: C. 3 - The Witch and the Nazi. P. 89 Lines 1-8 ;)

  • I believe you. Thanks for responding in a civilized manner. Most Sabbath/Ozzy fans would counter with personal attacks and name calling. Your explanation sounds perfectly logical.

  • @luxhey Where is your sources and have you personally talked to Ozzy Osborne yourself to ask him if he hated Dave Wagner? If not then shut the fuck up!

  • @rickyon No, Tony Hall insisted they'd record it.

  • @rickyon yup

  • @gi8809 and yesterdays children's version is rawer and better than the sabbath version.. youtube it!

  • now that's ridiculous.

  • The b side is Gonna Leave a Mark

  • cool man...whats the orig b side to this Crow classic?

  • I don't know. I had the album and wore it out and then bought the CD which is the cover on this video.

  • Cottage Cheese

  • cool man....just found Warning original by Ansley Dunbars Retaliation also.....now Im curious...whats the orig b side to this?

  • 1,000 extra points for originality this was the innovation

  • I heard this not too long ago on the syndicated "Blues Deluxe" radio show. How cool that they even had it in their library!

  • Whichever version you prefer, it's a badass bass line.

  • First time I hear this original version, quite surprised also!

Sabbath didn't actually choose to cover it, they got a proposal they first refused, then accepted as a first proper studio experience.

  • First time I've heard this version...........awesome

  • The singer sounds exactly like Jim Rutledge of Bloodrock!!

  • Nice. I like the sound. I'll check out the band after hearing this. Btw, I like both versions. Sabath's version has its charms too.

  • Very cool, thanx for posting.

  • You're welcome.

  • @rickyon

Thanks for uploading this original version of "Evil Woman".

    Great stuff of the 60s

  • Awesome the orginally song of evil woman i was reading i am ozzy book and i didnt know that was the orginal song for evil woman

  • Rickyon, which member of Crow wrote the lyrics for this song?

  • I can't say for sure but since it was written by Dave Wagner (Vocals) and the Wegand brothers I would assume that the vocalist Wagner wrote the lyrics. Black Sabbath did a cover of this song and it was actually BS's 1st single release. Of course it was a little bit more sinister. I think you can find it on you-tube!

  • That makes sense, thanks. Yeah, I've had the Sabbath version for years. The new Sanctuary remaster includes a previously unreleased version with horns, which I don't think anyone knew existed. Another great cover of the song is by Ike and Tina Turner, called "Evil Man"!

  • I always liked the horns in this song but that's probably because I'm an old fart

  • what was the other sabbath cover?

  • The song "Warning" was written and recorded by Aynsley Dunbars' Retaliation.

  • @ureadmymind same song done by Crow. Released on the European Release of Black Sabbath(in 1974) now it's on the Deluxe Edition of "BS"

  • I like every song they ever recorded. fantastic stuff that I still listen to often.

  • A killer band, back in the day with outstanding, crazy front man. High energy live performance!

  • Every song Crow recorded had their unique sound all over it. Dave wagner has always been my favorite vocalist of all time.
