Ike won this fight! Yes Oscar had a knockdown & incredible flurry in the 12th, but after the flurry he ran out of gas!!! Boxing and judges did everything they could to make Oscar the face of boxing, but he just could never deliver, especially in his big fights!
People who say Ike won this fight is blind. Although I wouldn't blame them because it was such a close fight, a fight like this that is close always has a debated result even if they choose the deserved winner, its happened a million times in boxing. De la Hoya won this fight because of the 12th round ALONE. Ike was probably slightly ahead after the 11th round but De la Hoya knocking him down and staggering him 2-3 times near the corner won him the fight, simply the12th round decided this fight.
quartey fue el unico boxeador que le peleo de igual a igual a de la hoya que estaba en su mejor momento y casi nadie le tocaba la cara en algunos episodios este negro lo cago a piñas por mas que perdio la pelea fue el que mejor lo enfrento
ike wons rounds 6,7, 8,9,how did he lose this fight listen to oscar corner at the end of the fight and in the last round they thought he had lost the fight to.
Good fight. I thought that Quartey won. But, he was definitely robbed when he fought Forrest. I think that is why Quartey retired from the sport of boxing. bad judges...Love the Quartey back-hand at 2:56 LOL! :p
Both fighters were effective in this bout, but the the jab contest went to Quartey. Oscar ate Jabs all night. Rewatch the fight if you have it on tape. Oscar edged this victory based on his POULARITY.
I saw this fight live, and have it on tape. I scored this fight several times and it could have gone either way..... The ref. could have easily stopped this fight when Oscar was swarming Ike. In any case I believe this fight was an honest draw.
He did swarm Ike, but alot of those punches were being deflected. OSCAR is a well KNOWN round STEALER with those last minute, SWAY the judge flurries.
@njmudpuppy :i agree it was a draw, but how can the ref stop a fight when Oscar himself was being hit with punches when he swarm Quartey, what about 1:17minute in the video when the ref saved Oscar from a knock down by interrupting the fight unecessarily,so Oscar can recover from the knock down, listern to the ringside commentary.
@deepsystem Halpern stepped in to break them when Oscar started holding, Quartey kept punching and drew a warning.....was no big deal..........I think this was a great fight for both of them really......too bad Oscar didnt close the same way against Trinidad
@njmudpuppy was a bullshit move by the ref..DLH failed at the clinch and the ref actually moved in to break them up before there was even a clinch...DLH was very coddled by boxing back then...he was the big money ticket!
what like Azumah Nelson gifted a draw against whiteman Jeff Fenech! a disgrace & Don King fix, should"ve been Jeff"s 4 world crown at different weight undefeated!!! take your blinkers off..
quartey won this fight, this was a 9 to 8 for ike both fighter were down but ike control this round he had DLH hurt most of the round,if you saw this whole fight go listen to DLH corner in the 10th 11th they thought DLH was losing, even with the knock down in the 12th DLH lost this fight by one point and that is the truth, why do you think it was no rematch.
You can't score the round 9 to 8 unless you have point deductions for fouls (e.g. low blow, head butt, etc.). It's called a "10 point-must system" for a reason: the winner of the round must be awarded 10 points; thus De La Hoya won the 12th round 10-8 or even 10-7. And you're whining about the decision reflects your lack of understanding. Who the fuck cares what Oscar's corner was saying? You think they're gonna' tell him to coast? He went all out in the 12th and won it big. Great win for Oscar.
what r talking about i just said that ike won round 2,5,6 ,7,8,9,11 and won bye a point or two even with the 10-8 round for hoya in the 12 round he was two many points downs, u cant give hoya a10 -7 for the 12 round.the judgees score on 10 points system but if u know how to add u can use any system, 2 points for 1 knockdown, 3points for 2 knock down whats not to understand its basic math
I had DLH winning this too. People act like Quartey was blatantly robbed. It was much closer than that. I think DLHs last round won it for him. If anyone was robbed v DLH, it was Felix Sturm not Quartey
Actually the Trinidad fight at 1st i thought he was robbed but watching it again, it was close maybe a draw but DLH didnt win it, the 2nd Mosley fight i saw it a Draw, and the one where he did get robbed badly was against Mayweather.
yeah i saw it just like Ledderman 114-113 for Quartey, but buiseness is buiseness and the Trinidad fight was signed for later that year already. You couldn't have the "Fight of the Millenium" with any draws or losses on those records.
@bambataa4ever this oscar would have probably beaten manny. Remember it took 8 rounds of manny using oscar for a punching bag to finally stop plus he never had to worry about incoming. Oscar was completely shot in that fight against manny.
DLH won this fight. I had it even until the 12th. DLH 115-114. Close fight and one can easy make a defense for Ike if he got the victory. IMO the 12th round knockdown is what did him in.
I loved Ike. Hes one of the most underrated fighters of all time
Everytime the full version of this fight cums on it disappears, Ike won this fight 115-113, Lampley's round 12 commentary is legendary...'Halpern's gonna stop I think, De La Hoya's right there' love that line, De la Hoya will KO Pacquiao with a counter right hand/ left hook combination. Peace!
pacquaio is going to go for most of the body early rounds maybe a couple of shots to the head but he will hit him more in the head later rounds and knock de la hoya out pacquiao is 2 fast 4 de la hoya and there is never a time that i dont see pacquiao throwing punches and bunches fast like that oscar wont know what hit him there both going to be fighting at 147 de la hoya might be a little bit stronger but pac is fast and strong
How is it possible that the Pacquiao supporters can possibly believe that he can KO De La Hoya? He's fought guys who punch much harder than Pacquiao. Vargas, Trinidad, Mosley, Quartey, Hopkins, just to name a few. In those fights De La Hoya was never seriously hurt. These guys jab harder than Pacquiao's punches.
lol, you are a funny guy. Never thought i'd see the day De La Hoya would get old in the ring. But oh well, Pacquiao won. Good sportsman too, did you catch what they said to eachother after the fight.
why did the ref stop the fight when Ike had the momentum to finish the fight. Only if he had being well desciplined in personal life he would have gone whole career undefeated. True African warrior. This fight should have being a draw both fighter should have fought again that what I thought and that will have been fight of the decade i think
This was oscars greatest win in terms of meeting a prime fighter. I thought that Ike won when I first saw it...the lopez kid who drew against ike in the fight prior to this one was avoided by oscar like nothing.
That's the problem w/that criteria. It's subjective. I thought Hopkins beat that bum taylor both times. And I hate Hopkins. But I like how the rules change based on how a guy is perceived. Hopkins was the champ and lost his title on a close decision to Taylor. But when Taylor is champ in the rematch, he gets the close decision vs. Hopkins in part b/c he's the champ. See the contradiction? That's why whoever wins, wins. Having to decisively beat the champ only applies to popular fighters
Actually I wouldn't. Trinidad's left hook was much tighter and much more powerful. Oscar's left hook tends to be wide. Oscar's best part of his game is and always has been his jab. He goes high and low with it well, and can throw it from the back seat or the front. His defense also is extremely underrated. You don't keep a flawless face in boxing w/o defense. His ability to parry an opponent's jab, the way he nullified Quartey's, is exceptional. Good left hook? Sure. Fast? Yes. But not great.
well, i didn't say oscar has the greatest left hook, all i am saying is that his left hook has always been dynamic. both guys have great left hooks. oscar drops his left hand and it is more of a half hook, half half uppercut really. you can throw jones jr in there as well is you want to talk about great left hooks
Under how many different videos are you going to make this same post?? And at least acknowledge that you are stealing it from Lampley instead of pawning it off as your own statement.
I hate HBO commentary with a fury! They stay riding certain fighters dick. Call it down the middle, or don't call it at all! The de la Hoya nuthuggery in this fight is infuriating!
I am tired of watching this fight. I have Ike winning by one point but I am tired of the arguments. Neither of them fought to their potential. DLH also lost to Whitaker but I think he beat Trinidad by a point. ..."close rounds to the champ". What a laugh!! That was a really funny comment.
yea exactly, "close rounds to the champ", and "close fights to the champ" havent you ever wondered why boxing experts say TO BEAT THE CHAMPION you have to win the fight convincingly??
The only boxing "experts" who say that are dead. That's an old, 1960s philosophy. If you win, you win. Period. I dont care if ts by 1 point or 10 points. I guess because the Colts were the champions, you have to beat them by 2 touchdowns. OTherwise, if you win by a point, you really lose? What kind of ignorant shit is that?
fagot dlh lost this fight. He also lost to sturm, whitaker and is scared of fighting guys of his size. He avoids winky, margarito and other guys. Finaly he sigs like a fag.
erlemus I agree with everything you said, but uh, you gotta know Margarito stands no chance against Oscar at 154.... Margarito would suffer his first TKO in the same fashion Oscar delivered one to Vargas.
DLH in his prime clowns Margarito at 147 or 54. But I dont think he TKOs the guy. DLH has never been an overly strong or physical guy. Margarito is an offensive machine, but every punch he throws he's available to get hit with. No defense. If DLH is in that high parry defense he offsets Margarito. Even though he lost to Quartey in my opinion, he's the only fighter I ever saw nullify Quartey's jab (except in Rd. 6). He did it w/the high parry which he works perfectly.
You are crazy. Margarito would hunt de la hoya down and tko him the way he did cotto. No way he could handle that kind of pressure. A prime DLH vs. Margarito is closer, but I would still favor the tornado.
George Foreman knew Oscar was gonna win because he's a professional boxer, he even said during the fight "if you want to be the champion of the world you have to get out there and mix-it-up and take it from him" AND what did Quartey do?? he kept his distance and threw weak jabs the whole match.. thats not what champions do
wow obviously u don't know what ur talking about, lmao! did u even see the whole fight, it was so easy to score, let me break it down for you --- Oscar wins 3 of the first 4 rounds and easily wins the last 3 rounds, DO THE MATH!! 3+3=6rounds, plus an extra point for the 10-8 round at the end ANSWER: Oscar wins by one... AND he should win by more than that cuz all the close rounds go the CHAMP!
Hey Kobe, I was rooting for Ike, but when the fight was over I just felt like DLH won. Years later, I'm bored and I pop in the fight tape. Watch it again and realize I had Ike 8-4 in rounds, DLH gets a 10-8 round in the 12th...so it's basically 7-5 Ike as I saw it. Its strange how you watch a close fight years later w/o the emotion and you can see it totally differently. So i watched DLH -Whitaker again and he lost that one too.
huh? ike was dropped twice. oscar once. He didn't drop ike three times. 8-4 in rounds for quartey, but closer on the cards b/c oscar won a 10-8 round in the 12th. easy fight to score.
Look at the fight. Oscar didn't knock Ike out. He didn't even come close. It was a split points decision in favor of the golden boy but it was a disputed points decision. I actually had the fight scored evenly. A draw.
Quartey won this fight. The silver spoon, I meen the golden boy benifited off of biased referees. I think the only round oscar won was the 12th. How do you beat a man that jabbed the shit out of you all night.
Esto es lo que dice Wikipedia, "Quartey built a lead later in the fight, but in the twelfth round, Oscar knocked Quartey down a second time and assaulted him till the final bell, and won the fight by split decision." QUOTE UN QUOTE!!! Eso lo saque en wikipedia.
well when you knock someone down in the 12th and then make him look like an amature on the ropes you gain that right to ease a bit plus I really dont expect you to understand what 12 rounds feel like but im sure you wouldnt even want to be even in the ring, if you want I can show you ( thats if you can make it to 12)

Creo que estas confundido. dice que GANO!!! LEE BIEN!! No seas ignorante.
Great. Does anyone have the old Oscar fights, Molina, Quartey, Carr, Olympic games? I have been looking a long time for these. What shocks me about youtube is all the olympics are covered except for the boxing. It was in 1992 I first became a Oscar fan but haven't seen those fights since then.
Oscar definitly won this fight. Because he was very agressive, and landed more punches. He definitly beat the hell out of Ike Quartay. But he lost to Mayweather, because Mayweather has the best defense in Boxing right now. :)
this is a fight oscar lost imo, you can see how flat footed, oscar is and how boxers give him trouble, interesting to see how he will do against Floyd

Vergadoce 3 years ago
well, i didn't say oscar has the greatest left hook, all i am saying is that his left hook has always been dynamic. both guys have great left hooks. oscar drops his left hand and it is more of a half hook, half half uppercut really. you can throw jones jr in there as well is you want to talk about great left hooks

Under how many different videos are you going to make this same post?? And at least acknowledge that you are stealing it from Lampley instead of pawning it off as your own statement.

I hate HBO commentary with a fury! They stay riding certain fighters dick. Call it down the middle, or don't call it at all! The de la Hoya nuthuggery in this fight is infuriating!

great fight. I wish they could both do it again in the futre (soon)

I am tired of watching this fight. I have Ike winning by one point but I am tired of the arguments. Neither of them fought to their potential. DLH also lost to Whitaker but I think he beat Trinidad by a point. ..."close rounds to the champ". What a laugh!! That was a really funny comment.
somewhere6 3 years ago
yea exactly, "close rounds to the champ", and "close fights to the champ" havent you ever wondered why boxing experts say TO BEAT THE CHAMPION you have to win the fight convincingly??
kobe0834 3 years ago
The only boxing "experts" who say that are dead. That's an old, 1960s philosophy. If you win, you win. Period. I dont care if ts by 1 point or 10 points. I guess because the Colts were the champions, you have to beat them by 2 touchdowns. OTherwise, if you win by a point, you really lose? What kind of ignorant shit is that?

fagot dlh lost this fight. He also lost to sturm, whitaker and is scared of fighting guys of his size. He avoids winky, margarito and other guys. Finaly he sigs like a fag.
erlemus 3 years ago
erlemus I agree with everything you said, but uh, you gotta know Margarito stands no chance against Oscar at 154.... Margarito would suffer his first TKO in the same fashion Oscar delivered one to Vargas.
JFKConspiracy 3 years ago
DLH in his prime clowns Margarito at 147 or 54. But I dont think he TKOs the guy. DLH has never been an overly strong or physical guy. Margarito is an offensive machine, but every punch he throws he's available to get hit with. No defense. If DLH is in that high parry defense he offsets Margarito. Even though he lost to Quartey in my opinion, he's the only fighter I ever saw nullify Quartey's jab (except in Rd. 6). He did it w/the high parry which he works perfectly.
Vergadoce 3 years ago
You are crazy. Margarito would hunt de la hoya down and tko him the way he did cotto. No way he could handle that kind of pressure. A prime DLH vs. Margarito is closer, but I would still favor the tornado.
reimold34 3 years ago
George Foreman knew Oscar was gonna win because he's a professional boxer, he even said during the fight "if you want to be the champion of the world you have to get out there and mix-it-up and take it from him" AND what did Quartey do?? he kept his distance and threw weak jabs the whole match.. thats not what champions do
kobe0834 3 years ago
shit the de la hoya is a fucking warrior,,close one but de la hoya almost finnish him ..good fight

Quartey won this fight man its a shame quartey was a beast who got alot of bad descisons
PAGoldenglovechamp06 3 years ago
Ike was robbed. Ike OWNED oscar from round 6 to round 11. DLH dominated round 12. The first 5 should be split evenly. That puts Ike up by 2 points.
falfighter 3 years ago 2
wow obviously u don't know what ur talking about, lmao! did u even see the whole fight, it was so easy to score, let me break it down for you --- Oscar wins 3 of the first 4 rounds and easily wins the last 3 rounds, DO THE MATH!! 3+3=6rounds, plus an extra point for the 10-8 round at the end ANSWER: Oscar wins by one... AND he should win by more than that cuz all the close rounds go the CHAMP!
kobe0834 3 years ago
Im have to disagree with the last 3. Ike won 10 and 11. The rest of your argument is good.
falfighter 3 years ago
Hey Kobe, I was rooting for Ike, but when the fight was over I just felt like DLH won. Years later, I'm bored and I pop in the fight tape. Watch it again and realize I had Ike 8-4 in rounds, DLH gets a 10-8 round in the 12th...so it's basically 7-5 Ike as I saw it. Its strange how you watch a close fight years later w/o the emotion and you can see it totally differently. So i watched DLH -Whitaker again and he lost that one too.

De La Hoya Rocked His Ass! Not A Close Fight Oscar Has 3 Knockdowns
southsidelifebra 3 years ago
huh? ike was dropped twice. oscar once. He didn't drop ike three times. 8-4 in rounds for quartey, but closer on the cards b/c oscar won a 10-8 round in the 12th. easy fight to score.

you are stupid oscar knocked ike out in this fight so you are stupid
prolilboxer 3 years ago
Look at the fight. Oscar didn't knock Ike out. He didn't even come close. It was a split points decision in favor of the golden boy but it was a disputed points decision. I actually had the fight scored evenly. A draw.
danjon54 3 years ago
You don't get knocked down twice, almost knocked out in the twelfth and expect to take the champ's belt. Sorry. Oscar's shining moment!!!
2565 4 years ago 2
lol.did you even watch this entire fight? Oscar was getting jab to death by ike and punished with the str8.
Oh and oscar tasted the canvas in that same rd. = wash. this fight was a draw at best for oscar and win at best for quartey.
instead 116-112 and 116-113 for delahoya..LMAO..you'd think Ike didn't even show up. Last card was more realistic 115-114 for quartey.
This is why no one likes delahoya and his gifts he's recieved (see vs. whitaker also) lol
500348 3 years ago
why about the gift he didn't get vs tito or the 2nd mosley. You crack me up.
Oscar won this fight. Deal with it!

Quartey won this fight. The silver spoon, I meen the golden boy benifited off of biased referees. I think the only round oscar won was the 12th. How do you beat a man that jabbed the shit out of you all night.

quartey

i think quartey won this fight personally. even if you think otherwise you have to admit quartey is a warrior.
myoor12 4 years ago
Esto es lo que dice Wikipedia, "Quartey built a lead later in the fight, but in the twelfth round, Oscar knocked Quartey down a second time and assaulted him till the final bell, and won the fight by split decision." QUOTE UN QUOTE!!! Eso lo saque en wikipedia.

If they say "assaulted him till the final bell," they're crazy. Oscar just walked around for like the last two minutes of the fight.

THe point is: Oscar won.

well when you knock someone down in the 12th and then make him look like an amature on the ropes you gain that right to ease a bit plus I really dont expect you to understand what 12 rounds feel like but im sure you wouldnt even want to be even in the ring, if you want I can show you ( thats if you can make it to 12)
