I was driving home from work last night and heard this ballad on Radio 2. I was struck by the words Hazeldeane as I have a friend named Hazel Deane! I have posted a link to the Corries version to her. I have since been listening through other versions and yours is beautiful. I just have it on repeat.
this is such a difficult guitar piece to get right (it's not the notes that are hard--it's trying for that pure sweet tone Simpson can get!) and you do a good job here.
Based on your facial expressions, you put a lot of passion and dedication into your playing. Are there tablatures available on these tunes? I am new to guitar. So, I would like to learn correctly the first time.
@drafthorselover Mind 'Jock O Hazeldean' isn't Irish. It's Scottish. Words by Sir Walter Scott! I think it is based on an earlier English ballad but don't know if the tune was the same or not.
I like the way you have avoided slavishly copying Martin's arrangement adapting it to your own feel for the piece. I have the DVD and Tab of this and can easily see the changes. It is especially noticeable where you have moved the Gmajor triad on 12th fret harmonics, playing a glissando in its place and then using the triad roughly 4 bars later, nice touch.
A tragic case of 'guitarface', but redeemed by superb playing. Beautifully done, well recorded & nice Collings too!

Bravo David. You put a lot of emotion into your playing. You also give the harmony a chance to breathe.
Cheers,

I really like the sound of you Collings. How did you record this?
digittydog 2 years ago
This one was recorded with an Audio Technica 4050 directly into a camcorder (using an attenuator) with a little reverb in the loop.
