I had a silver go from 4 inches to almost 21 inches in 2 yrs in an aquarium, didn't seem to stunt his growth... there's not a whole lot of truth to the "they'll only grow so big in an aquarium" idea

True.......but in a narrow aquarium they will grow more short and fat. Very true that the aquarium doesn't dictate the size of the fish, just shape as an adult. I have seen some unfortunate oscars that are very oddly shaped due to being grown in a 55 gallon long aquarium.
