100% legal. As long as the ball is snapped to another player its fair game. Im the varsity punter for my school and we ran this exact play once in our season and it worked but not as well. We got down to the 2 yard line. But then proceeded to score the next play.

Its legal. As long as the long snapper and another player made an exchange of the football, regardless of if it is conventional or not, it is a center exchange which makes it a perfectly legal play.

my bad, the way I wrote this implied that I am accusing the coaches of always looking for a break from the refs. That's not what I meant and in the future I will be more careful when I type. What I mean is that some of the rebel fans are always crying foul when we lose, even when nothing illegal occurs. Our coaches should(and probably do), work on punt plays and teach their players to always be on watch for a fake. It was a smart play on coach maniors part, cause he knew we would not expect it.
