  • Ahah just watched the whole thing. Most awesome concert ever

  • This cracks me up.Everyone thinks hes starting SLTS and he plays Boston.I like when he looks at Kris and then at the crowd with that (they dont get it) look...........lol

  • Kurt didn't rip off the riff, he was sort of trying to ape the Pixies at the time he wrote the song. some of you need to get a clue.

  • Smells Like Teen Spirit is the shittiest song in the WORLD compared to More Than a Feeling.

  • like if novoselic here looks like 80s Hetfield :P

  • The riff also somewhat reminds me of the troggs wild thing.

  • What the hell is cracked?

  • @SgtZaqq Website with articles, mostly humorous or interesting.

  • @SgtZaqq It's an enjoyable site called cracked that lists, well, lists, and one article, top 6 (or 7, can't remember) songs that were meant as jokes, had this video for Smells Like Teen Spirit's spot on the list. It's a cool site, and you should check it out.

  • kurt stole the riff, he repeatedly said mockingly. Do not know if he meant it or not

  • @NICOTOUR3000 it was kurt, so more than likely he did mean it.

  • The song is a ripoff of a classic riff. More Than A Feeling was a ripoff of Louie Louie, and this was an intentional ripoff of them both "to make the ultimate pop song", from what he's said in interviews.

  • Am I the only one who wanted to hear Novoselic singing the whole song?

  • @Antusteam HELL YEAH BRAH

  • Comment removed

  • what the hell is cracked?

  • @iHateThisShirt what the hell is google? ....

  • Whoa.

  • DOOODZ LIKE OMG I JUST TOTALLY SAW THIS ON CRACKED!!!11!!!!!

  • @BBnanner

Thank you. That's getting so annoying.

  • I still love it more than Boston

  • Who's here because of Cracked?

  • Strangely, I can't hear the similarity in my head but it's so obvious in this video.

  • @BlitzburghBrian

I know the songs are so incredibly different.

  • @nomadicsky i agree but in alot of interviews Kurt startes that it was a non intentional rip off

  • Kurt Cobain... telling the people they can kiss his damn ass with their stupid teen spirit deodorant song XD

  • I love it when people read something from Cracked, and then they run around spewing it everywhere.

It's obvious you got it from Cracked, but keep this in mind- it's a humor site. Less fact than humor, zero credibility, and a very poor foundation on which to build an argument. It's a great site, yeah, but do your own damned research on a topic before you go parrot everything you read. It doesn't make you intelligent!

  • Sent by cracked.

  • @purpleDERPHERPle Me too!

  • @purpleDERPHERPle Great?

  • "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was really just Kurt making fun of teenage rebels screaming for a revolution. It was all a joke. So was this.

  • i FUCKING LOVE that song

  • BOSTON rules!!!

  • Like a boss, Dave Grohl just rolls with the punches.

  • Poking fun at what is probably THE quintessential corporate rock song of the 70s, a song they probably heard billions of times... & in turn writing the quintessential corporate rock song of the 90s. Gotta love rock & roll.

  • That smirk.

  • I'm on crack

  • Singing? What's that?

  • they sound drunk

  • I don't like Everett True's statement : "More than a feeling" with the lyrics changed". Yeah, right. Besides a little something in the riff, "teen spirit" and "more than a feeling" have nothing in common.

  • @dummytree It's literally 2 chords that have been swapped with each other.

  • haha fuckin hilarious

  • an honest artist? ; )

  • lol at Kurt smirking

  • LoL at Krist..

  • You know when they are letting Novaselic sing they arent doing a serious attempt at the song lol

  • @mkang1986 That's CHAIRMAN Novaselic to you

  • 0:11 speechless... prove that the time machine was use by Boston

  • in the dvd you can hear dave singing : MORE THAN A FEELIING!! ERREEE WARARARARR AREEWWR!!

  • was it Krist or Dave legit singing it good?

  • i thikn it's crystal clear where did nirvana get their inspiration to write smells like teen spirit riff :P

  • Not my favorite classic rock band, but this is funny.

  • HEy Kurt leave Krist sing!!!

  • that guy can play 4 chords and make vai look like a little bitch

  • @BayouBluesMan yeah whatever. steve vais little finger makes this guy look like a little bitch even when he isnt playing.

  • @cyllocybin dude ...get some pills, grow a dick will ya? Vai is the flash kurt is the essence and since i'm chatting with a minor look up how many records kurt has sold and how many vai did - MATCH-GAME - call yr MOMMA U'VE BEEN O-W-N-E-D

  • @BayouBluesMan MATCH-GAME you sound like an idiot but that much is obvious. just so you know your not chatting with a minor. your talking to someone who knows enough to know that Sales figures are not a gauge of musical quality. the evidence is plain

The Backstreet Boys sold more albums than Nirvana. ]

im not going to bother going into how good steve vai is, he doesnt have much to compete with against this turd

i called your momma and told her you just got p-o-w-n-e-d :p

  • @cyllocybin oh come on don't hate the player hate the GAME.Where did u get these figures the backsteet outselling Nirvana from the bottom of yr crack pipe? And u call Kurt Cobain a turd? Have some respect. Now spellcheck with me goathumping dude : V-a-i----i-s ----a----FLASHY idiot , Vai is to the guitar an equivalent to lady gaga , too much ballshit too fast. No feel , no heart...no LYRICS. Call yr STEPDAD TELL HIM TO STOP TOUCHING YOU ANYMORE

  • @BayouBluesMan lots of his songs have lyrics. you just dont have a scooby doo. yes he plays some awesome songs like from bill and ted which are fast and rocky and maybe somewhat flashy as well as lots of instrumentals. however if you think he has no feel or heart then you really dont know enough to warrant a valid opinion on him and you need to watch him playing the triple neck guitar live in denver. the song is called i know your here.

    considder yourself schooled.

  • @BayouBluesMan google it. backstreet boys millenium album sold 40 million albums worldwide compared to nevermind which has sold 30 copies, ok bad, joke 30 million copies worldwide according to many internet sources so take a peek for yourself. you with me now? so if sales are an indicator of how bad music is then nirvana isnt as bad as backstreet boys. but as steve vai has sold 15 million albums, he is ok. however steve vai has spent most of that time playing to sold out stadiums. game set match

  • @cyllocybin i'll take your word for it . if backstreet have sold that much then we're actually in hell.

Listen this is the eternal battle technique VS feel , i'll take cobain , srv over steve vai EVERY time.

Cobain couldn't match Vai's technique but still awesome lyrics and simple but awesome guitar , i like simple stuff that yet are so deep and complicated -u catch my drift son?

  • @BayouBluesMan thats my point. cobains music doesnt seem that deep to me. lyrics like "im so horny, thats ok my willys good" doesnt really hit any emotions for me. steve vais music seems to take so many directions and detours and takes you on such a journey. but im glad to see your respect srv he was a legend. but i would say if vai doesnt do it for you please dont bad mouth him. he deserves better for the contribution to music he has made over the last 30 years. argument made lets enjoy nirvana

  • @cyllocybin

"lyrics like "im so horny, thats ok my willys good" doesnt really hit any emotions for me"

SPECTACULAR fail. Fucking hilarious. The correct lyrics are; "That's ok, my WILL IS good." Perhaps if you took the time to actually read the lyrics/listen more carefully you'd appreciate the music more. Just a thought. :)

  • @urizen123 well i tried but its just not friendly to my ears. i cant help how he sounds lol. but yeah now you pointed that out it is fucking hilarious. thats made my weekend

  • im guessin your old lol metal rulez \m/

  • ashandi thanx for that.

  • mannn his guitar tone is weak as piss, should use an esp with some real distortion

  • @Jak3HxC yeah, if he wants to play some stupid speed metal.

  • c'mon not hard to work that one out.any 4 chord progression has been done.an aussie duo did 50 songs in 5 minutes using the same 4 chords.it's somewhere on yt.

  • @nphanlon1973 Four chords by axis of awesome....its a pretty good demonstration of that point

  • Fuck Nirvana ¬¬

  • lol is that everett true?

  • Krist is a beautiful singer :')

  • @TheScrewed0ver He was the original singer in the early days....:p

  • @ashandil i dont get this incident,,.,,werent krist and dave aware taht kurt is gonna do that

  • @MrMasoodrodman1 What do u mean? It could have been rehearsed and just as easily improvised on stage (i.e. they could have followed kurt's lead)...dunno either way

  • @ashandil i meant krist looked surprised

  • LOL cover!

  • It's an almost indentical rhythm but the key and (thus) the chords are different.

I think that calling smells like teen spirit, "More than a feeling with the lyrics changed" is crude especially since smells like teen spirit is in F minor and more than a feeling is in G major.

  • So so so miss Nirvana

  • Lol the guy with the beard looks very stoned :D

  • lol I never noticed that, but it's kind of true

  • whos the guy talking about NIRVANA?

  • more than a feeling is also a great song.

  • wtffff

  • @stas11112 lol what the fuck fuck fuck fuck

  • haha great

  • Hahaha, one of the things I love about Nirvana is that they never shy from their critics. That guy makes a snipe at Smells Like Teen Spirit saying it sounded like a boston song and this is how Kurt replies. Love It.

The start of this show was also in response to rumors Kurt was sick, dead, that Nirvana Broken up and that Kurt could no longer sing, and then they come out with this preforkmance, amazing. What a great Band.

  • Hahaha, one of the things I love about Nirvana is that they never shy from their critics. That guy makes a snipe at Smells Like Teen Spirit saying it sounded like a boston song and this is how Kurt replies. Love It.

  • I wish they would've done about thirty more seconds of the song, merely for the odd dissonance it made me feel/think about. Very funny, yet a bit unsettling, that smile Kurt got @ 0:28 . It were as if he were at the same time enjoying playing the song and kind of doing a mental eye-roll at it!

    Neat-o clip, thanks rebelyell1983x .

  • that was absolutely SHIZZ

  • fantastica la faccia di Kurt....ci è rimasto di merda!! =) grande Kurt!!!! xD

  • @theROCKisAmagic Puoi dirlo forte!

  • Hahaha, awesome video. Two classic songs.

  • xD

  • i hope everyone realize's they werent doing a legit cover of more than a feeling, kurt was poking fun at himself and trying to show everyone how smells like teen spirit (in his opinion) was a rip off of more than a feeling

  • @NineMonthMedia Dude, you just read that on Cracked.com right then, didn't you?

Seriously, stop being an arrogant ass.

  • @Argipane Actually, he wrote that comment 6 months ago and Cracked posted that article yesterday. Seriously, stop being an arrogant ass by calling people arrogant asses.

  • @uglybabashouse the urge to flame someone over the internet is sometimes so great silly trolls forget to get their facts right :P

  • @cknro Yeah, I guess you're right. Most people just troll and flame because they have unresolved aggression they need to get out, and they forget that it is an art and should be treated as such. :)

  • @Argipane dude i posted that like 6 months ago, I dont even know what the fuck cracked.com is.

  • Smells like teen spirit by Nirvana sounds more like More than a feeling by Boston than More than a Feeling by Nirvana

  • Haha I love this so much. And to everyone saying it's shit, can you honestly not tell that it's meant to sound bad? Hence them all laughing and stuff

  • @PatchCornAdams721 I definitely can't tell that; but it was an old-schooly moment and a mind trip and made my thoughts harken back a bit to when I'd always hear that song on the radio. Sweet momentary lapse back to the ninteen-eighties!

  • @YaWantTaters Totally man. I think 'sounds bad' is the wrong term...It sounds.....Crooked, but still good in a weird way :)

  • Haha! My friend sent me this, and, for some random reason, I love it! Kurt's smile... so cute! And the way they just... purposefully fuck it up... so funny.

  • Eu queria vê o Nirvana tocando a versão inteira do More than a Feeling, seria muito foda!

  • @xxedward89xx you don't get it hmm??? -.-

  • lol krist singing xD hehe

  • <3

  • wow im sorry but that was pure shit haha xD

  • i like the boston version better

  • what the shit is this?

  • what a sense of humor hahahahaha

  • i actually would have liked to have heard the rest of it. I like both songs!

  • sounds nasty when you put it together. it would be a melody/ harmony if it were ripped off. ps: are you a minlti-million dollar name in the music industry? NO? well i guess you dont fully undertand how to write a song.

  • looks like Chris likes more then a feeling better then teen spirit lol

  • When you're relying almost exclusively on 3 or 4 power chord arrangements like Cobain did, you're going to come up with a lot of stuff that's already been done a million times over. Teen Spirit is no exception. I'm surprised more people don't point out that "Rape Me" is reminiscent of the Troggs' "Wild Thing", or that the main riff in Offspring's "Self Esteem" is similar to both those songs. The way those 4 chords are strummed has been done by many, many artists.

  • @TestMeatDollSteak

I think you're totally right about this. Ironically, he went on the record as hating bands who did this very thing. Like when he wrote in his journals that Nirvana had never felt the need to play 'Gloria' or 'Louie, Louie' . I guess his fondness for this chord progression says more about where his musical roots lay (he was a Boston fan growing up) than anything else.

  • @dyskelia Right, I think that quote came from an early bio that Kurt wrote up for the band around the time they were signed to Sub Pop. The main riff of Teen Spirit might be a little Boston-esque, but the vocal melodies and overall dynamics of the song are nothing like More Than A Feeling. The riff could just as easily have been a subconscious theft as a conscious one. These kinds of chord progressions are so prevalent in rock music that I think the similarities are purely coincidental.

  • Comment removed

  • ye they are very similar riffs

  • I just love the boyish grin at 0:27

  • It just sounds like kurt listened to MTAF and was like... how can i make this song sound angry... lol. both great tunes.

    RIP Kurdt.

  • Even Nirvana admits that they did steal the riff of "More than a feeling" and the result, of course, is "Smells like Teen Spirit".

  • Well I'll be damned - I love Boston's song and SLTS and never linked the two. Nirvana used it to great effect. Didn't know Brad Delp had committed suicide. Two troubled souls now at rest.

  • Nevermind... I'm a Bleach guy myself!

  • this was showing how he created the 4 chord riff from bostons 4 chord riff.

  • Cobain did not even write the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit.

  • God, I love Kurt's facial expression, while catching everyone almost off guard. I'll always respect him.

  • kurt hated the song smells like teen spirit anyway

  • @Nirvanagirl44 yes, Cobain hated Smells Like Teen Spirit and he hated it because he did not write the lyrics to it, and said the lyrics were meaningless because he was sick of being critically acclaimed for something he did not even write and tired of dodging questions about the meaning of the lyrics.

  • Fuck you Cobain. Boston was 10 times the band Nirvana was. Go suck-start another shotgun.

  • @StephenHardyMusic he didn't make of boston you scatterbrained man...

    That was just a joke...

  • @StephenHardyMusic It's called being musically self-aware; they were basically admitting to the fact that it sounded similar. They probably didn't mean to rip off "More Than A Feeling", but sometimes you can write a riff that sounds cool, then later realize it sounds alot like something you've heard before. It's just musical patterns emerging from the subconscious mind. That's how rock music changes and develops over time, evolving and building on what came before.

  • @Elricwulf wrong. Cobain hated the song Smells Like Teen Spirit, he even named it after a fake scent, fake chemical deodorant, because he did not even write the lyrics to it. Don't believe all the official story bullshit pumped out by Courtney Love and her army of publicicists and propagandists. He knew Teen Spirit was a deodorant. He did not write the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit, and put the lyrics given him to music based on More than a Feeling as had been suggested to him.

  • @ehbseedy What does that have to do with the guitar riff? I am talking about how they knew that the riffs were very similar. That has nothing to do with the lyrics. They are two separate things. To Kurt the music came first, the lyrics were secondary. And I care shit about Courtney Love - who really gives a crap about her? I'd rather listen to Kat Bjelland any day if I feel like listening to some grunge chick screeching.

  • @Elricwulf but on the lyric sheet for the song that Cobain later named SL Teen Spirit, which was given to Cobain in 1986, it specified the idea of using the main riff from 'More than a Feeling' raunched up& was laid out in similar structure to 'More than a Feeling' with some parts to be sung quietly and then building to LOUD, back to quiet etc., so Cobain knew for sure that he was morphing the More than a Feeling riff.

I wouldn't call it a 'rip off ' of Boston, just an influence. Its music.

  • @ehbseedy And what did I say in the post you replied to? "They probably didn't mean to rip off "More Than A Feeling"... rock music changes and develops over time, evolving and building on what came before."

Wow. Look, and now you are basically paraphrasing what I said there. Actually *read* a comment before you reply "Wrong" to it. That word implies that you don't agree with the comment.

  • @Elricwulf I didn't mean to be seedy, but what I was saying was that Cobain knew from the beginning that he was morphing More than a Feeling, and your post implied that it sort of happened unconsciously, which is not

accurate. I replied that though he definitely used the More than a Feeling riff, it doesn't mean he "ripped off" Boston, I agree with you that he just evolved a new song of his own. At least he altered it, so it was nowhere near as blatant as some of the musical plagiarism out now

  • @ehbseedy Ah. Well, I wonder if Boston ever knew or even cared. I know I would have been honored if Kurt had used a song I wrote as inspiration. I might want a few royalties from it, though. =D j/k

  • @Elricwulf the weird part is that Brad Delp, the lead singer for Boston, and the singer of 'More than a Feeling', committed suicide in 2007, and in classic fashion. with a suicide note and deliberately asphyxiating himself with sleeping pills and two charcoal barbeques placed in the bathroom, to poison himself with carbon monoxide fumes while passed out on the floor. totally premeditated. Its almost like he saw how Cobain was deified and worshipped for committing suicide, 2 songs, 2 suicides

  • @ehbseedy That's sad. That kind of thing happens to so many amazingly talented, but misunderstood artists. So much wasted potential. Makes me think of that shooting star song by Bad Co.

  • @StephenHardyMusic Agreed!

  • @StephenHardyMusic

Dude Boston pretty much sucks except for more than a feeling

  • @munefresh Not at all. I know it's a matter of opinion, but have you heard any of their other stuff? Basically every song on their first two albums was a hit

  • @munefresh

Stfu you don't know anything about good music. Nirvana and Boston are both amazing.

  • @theronmoustakes Well said.

  • nirvana concerts never had decent lighting

  • I wonder why nirvana was a bit messed up at its live concerts?

  • The guy at the beggining looks like he's done his fair share of drugs

  • MOREEE THAN FEELING AAAL LBASLALABALBLSLBALASBABBAAA..... hahahaha

  • Want to talk about borrowing chord structures, listen to Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4", then Led Zeppelin's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", and finally Green Day's "Brain Stew" back to back..... talk about borrowing chords lol!

  • Christ this sucked ass

    Bastardizd a good song...

  • what the fuck was this

  • @misterjustincool i dunno man i think they talkin about some psychological shit

  • @misterjustincool reading 92

  • @misterjustincool search up more than a feeling

  • @misterjustincool

it was an old prank by Nirvana on "More than a Feeling" )) just find the original...

  • @misterjustincool 41 sec of pure awesomnes

  • @misterjustincool it was nirvana.

  • it scares me actually when i was 13 i wanted to be a little Kurt and now im fucked up on drugs and drinkin and playing music..... unfortunately mission accomplished

  • @iTweeet Well you have one more important step left to become totally like him. I would recommend against being a gun owner btw.

  • lol finally see him.

  • .. does anyone wanna talk about how those riffs are completely different?

  • @carboxyl lmao agreed. It's ironic because the only reason people even care/noticed is because kurt himself pointed it out. Besides, most rock songs use similar basic chord structures

  • i saw the upside down guy :D

  • Does anyone else but me notice the guy in the audience in the bottom left corner of the screen that is upside down at :30

  • @GivepeaceachanceJL No no no, that's his face. Sad, really :(

  • Comment removed

  • cyber rage.. you guys are fucking cool?

  • I see my aunt mary

  • I have more than a feeling that Kurt was greatly influence by the music but even more the word play of The Replacements. At least Paul praised and wrote a song about his hero's a la Alex Chilton. And The Replacements songs were not so intro-centric and read like great literature at times.

  • Nevermind was the first album to make a real impression on me as a kid.
