I know that we can't say who's best, but if you know a guitarist who blows you away - don't let this stop you from putting in a claim for your favourite. That's the great thing about the Internet - new talent to check out. I'd never really heard much from Eric Johnson - he was just one of those talents I missed out on. there are some good Russian bluesmen - check out Wolf Mail in Moscow (I know HE's not Russian). They've got the boxers, the footballers - they'll have the guitarists next.
You know -- I have been a musician for over forty years -- Better? Best? Who cares -- this is GOOD and those who manage to keep their craniums above their rectums know this also -- this guy plays with feeling and emotion -- THAT is what music is all about -- it is not always about how many notes you can play in a phrase -- but rather what you do with them as they fly from your fingers.......and those who feel differently? Well that is why they call it 'art' after all --
The version on "So, It's Like That" is different, but this version is basically the same on the "Rockpalast" DVD. You can also get it from ITunes on the "Shepherds Bush" album. You have to download the whole album to get it, but it's worth it. 5 tracks and 50 minutes of music for $4.
Joes strengths lie in the fact that he is a superb talent and "feel" player as well as being a truly decent and approachable human . Joe has helped fill the void in my life after Rory Gallagher passed away. They are basically cut from the same cloth.
Hey man... you been a long time in the wilderness. I agree though.
Rory made me proud to be Irish. The only slight problem with that is that I'm not actually Irish. He was in his prime when I was at University in England - and saw him many times on the circuit.
I like this guy .but throwing around greatest all rounder and best living player is ridicules say you like him better, fine im happy. but to say best is ignorant at worst blind fanaticism.
the first time i went to see joe my dad took me 2 years ago. was at the renfrew ferry in scotland. i never knew what he looked like and was familiar with only a few on his songs. 75 people turned up that night! i stood with my pint right in from of him for the whole night. playing an arms length away. will never forge it! peace
As a 53yr old who has seen em all from hendrix clapton paige satriani vai etc etc In my opinion Joe is the greatest all round guitarist i have ever seen..he has it all..go see him live while you still can afford 2!! truly awesome talent.
I just saw Joe and the band at a poky barn type building in Tavistock, Devon. A real pity the audience couldn't shut up and enjoy him. They chatted all over the support act.
$30 US and a 40 minutes in the car to over hear a load of know all locals :(
I've seen Joe here in Houston a few times... at TINY out of the way places... I keep thinking that the next time he comes through he will be playing some Big Ass Place. He and the band are VERY personable and take time to talk with us after the show...
I saw Joe in Denver this past winter. It was the first time he ever sold out a show in Denver. He said the first time he played in Denver that 5 people showed up and he still played the full set. What a great guy and performer.
As an Eric Johnson fan for life!! Joe Bonamassa is head and shoulders with EJ! What a great feeling, mood inspiring guitarist! Joe Bonamassa is GREAT!!!!
I have been a fan of Joe's for several years and have seen many of the greats in my lifetime. One of the greatest I saw way back in the '70's was Rory Gallagher. Rory had incredible technique and played from the heart. Joe Bonamassa is of this same class. Let us also not forget that Joe has a tremendous voice to go along with his extraordinary guitar skills.
Quite extraordinary. What an honor to have been in the audience. I have to thank MARTICA in NY for turning me on to this gift of the guitar. This is the greatest living guitarist. Beyond BB, Segovia, David Gilmour, Slow hand, Edge, Eddie Van Hale, Lenny Kravitz, Slash, Jimmy P and Keith R. he carries the bar to new heights of virtuosity. Exquisite, with a voice of conviction and passion. During the acoustic solo he even filled in drummer and bassist parts. I'm Awestruck.
"...the greatest living guitarist": this heavily depends on your taste! On your list, I would put Jeff Beck on top. But if you turn to other styles, I would mention Paco de Lucia, Al di Meola, or the young german "Djangologe" Joscho Stephan. And, don't forget the jazz scene, and so on...
I love beck, adore and worked with De Lucia, Mclaughlin, Steve Vai, BB King, Keith Richards, Dylan.. Joe is a cut above, he is beyond even Metheny. Sorry it is as simple as that.

Who's "the Best" arguments are tired at best. That said. Joe is a very special talent. I hope to enjoy his progression for years and years.

Anyone know the name of this song and what album of Joe's it appears on?

Song is called Mountain Time, it's on So It's Like That. Joe's live version is different from the CD version.

No, it's "Richmond", on his last CD, "Sloe Gin"

It's Mountain Time but the only album version is on "So It's Like That" and it's completely different. The live versions are much more moving!
