Hi, I'm currently down here at Ft Rucker learning how t fly UH-60s.
It really depends on what your son wants to do. If he wants active duty, there is no guarantee that he will get aviation going the ROTC route. It's pretty competitive and the slots are few. He definitely has a better chance going as a WOC. Also, as a WO his primary job is to fly while officers get tasked with other responsibilities, but that is offset with better pay.
Thanks much for the info - I will pass it on to my son.
Lots of different "recruiters" telling him different stories as to "the best way to go" so we figured getting the info from those who are around it and actually doing it might be better.
My son is in the Army and his MOS is 15Y-Apache helicopter mechanic. I love this video! I will make sure to share this one..thank you so much for sharing this awesome video!
@Flipnoy808 uhm some. Cobras have really gone down to the Navy, Cayuse are used by Marine special forces, Hueys are still used in the Marines.
as an army officer the most common things you'll fly are the Blackhawk, Apache, Chinook and Kiowa Warrior, which are the aircraft you saw from 1:15 to the end.
problem is, as an officer, it won't be your sole duty to fly, unless your a Warrant Officer, than flying as you do because its your specialty, but officers have multiple duties outside flying.
@Flipnoy808 contact me through my page, and we'll talk, i can get you into the aviation business, and tell you differences between right and wrong, good decisions and bad, the honest to world truth about aviation, and how it works throughout the world.
@Flipnoy808 You can become a warrent officer through the enlisted way, or you can go through an officer program and try and get a aviation slot that way
huey's are outdated the blackhawk helicopter replaced them in the early 1980

Looking for a Blackhawk Crew Chief or Pilot
Just dropped my 18 yr. old son off @ Ft Eustis for AIT - 15T
He's in for 6-yrs. as a reservist. After AIT he goes back to TX & into ROTC with his reserve unit @ Texas Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth.
Wants to end up flying Blackhawks. What are your thoughts on the track he is on? Would there be a preference as far as him trying:
-For OCS after ROTC & college
-Working to become a Crew Chief and then submit a WO packet
-To submit for WOFT after college?

Fairly certain...
Huey: Still active with the USCG, USCBP, and USMC.
Cobra: Still active in the USMC, US Army, and I think the Naval aviators keep a few kicking around.
Apache: Still active.
Belle: Hasn't been used since the Korean Conflict.
UH60 Blackhawke: Still active.
Chinook: Still active.
The ones that are no longer active however is the abandoned project of the Kamanchi ( shown at 3:21 ) and the Night Hawke ( shown at 1:01 )

The UH-1 Huey used to be the workhorse of the armed forces, until the UH-60 came into service in 1974
