wish I could find the clip of Mel and Kenny Rogers singin' Ruby together.....there's a part where Kenny sings the Ruby part and leaves the rest of the chorus for Mel to sing, but instead he acts like he's stuttering when it's his turn. I say acts like he's stuttering because I don't believe he has that problem when he's singin. But maybe he was really stuttering. Well whichever it was he made Kenny laugh......and me. ;)

@yearling4 Oops, nevermind my comment about him acting like stuttering.....after seeing some other videos, I see he probably did get his words hung up, which makes sense for those songs where he's more or less talking than singing because that's how the song is performed....blah blah blah. :)

Remember the first time that I saw Mel on stage there he had a teriffic band with four fiddle players I like that suit he had on this was in his younger days. He stilllooks good aqnd can still sing although his band nis much smaller aqnd nthe Stutterettes are no longen with him. A fan

My mother and aunt got to go back stage when Mel was in our town/they our cousin,s/he was nice enough to give them a kiss and said now we are kissing cousin,s/so glad they had that memory because now they have past on/Bless you Mel,now I can tell thier story/they would B proud.

I got to meet Mel several times and spend some time in his home when he was making the Whataburger commercials. He let me play the guitar he wrote CocaCola Cowboy on.

What a decent fun guy. I will always remember him as a gentleman!

Wrong! Bobby Bare did have a hit with a Mell Tillis tune - but it wasn't Ruby. It's Kenny Rogers And The First Edition all the way. The Mel Tillis compostion that bobby bare recorded and took to the top was "Detroit City. I want to go home.... I want to go home...Oh how I want to go home....

Mel and his band, "THE STATESIDERS" performed almost 100 live shows across the US and Canada in 2007, and what you hear on this 1994compressed, digitized clip isn't even close to the LIVE sound Mel and the Statesiders sound like.

This version is little over-produced for my taste but I love Mel Tillis's voice.

The interesting thing about this song is that when it was released by the First edition in the late 60's everyone assumed that it was written about the Viet Nam war, but mel wrote it about a guy from the Korean war.
