  • there are two words in this that trigger a massive quantity of nostalgia glee. These are "Vauxhall" and "Conference"

  • Football IMO needed a 'break' from the Heysel/Hillsborough 80s...but what's wrong with this? This is fucking great

  • Can't football go back to this.....I can't stand the wall to wall, 24/7 saturation these days, as a fan. I'm not asking for much, surely, this isn't jumpers for goalposts, it's 1990, 'modern' enough.

  • Bloody hell Luton have fallen by the wayside haven't they....

    Not to mention Wimbledon.

  • colchester doomed, thats just the way it is

  • wow i remember this season. my stepdad took me United v Luton. We saw a young Ryan Giggs and won 5-0 if my memory serves me. McClair played cant remember much else was too young. Is this the last season Liverpool won it? I guess so.

  • Liverpool fans may want to frame this picture it's something that won't happen for decades again!

  • @grant160619 I'd never have believed it back then that this would be our last ever championship

  • @grant160619 And Man utd fans claim this doesn't exist as football history wasn't invented until the Premiership was started

  • Oddly enough, this is one of my favourite Youtube vids. Pure nostalgic reasons. Cov 10th in the top league, we're now rooted to the bottom of the Championship. Life eh?

  • And Luton edged Sheff Wed out by winning their last two games!

  • I remember this music during Grandstand.

West Ham 7th in Division 2.

  • Always beautiful to see a table without Stretford United in the top half...

  • The good old days. Such a shame that they are gone.

  • This was the year I was born and me team is Aston Villa.

  • wow thank you !!!

  • If anyone knows what that music is please post it !!

  • @trickykid73 The music is an arrangement of Bruce Hornsby and the Range - The Way It Is

  • Villa 2 points off top! Get in!

  • And now you're gonna believe us!!!! The Gas are going up! (As champions)

  • Sheffield United - 2nd in League Two Yay!!!!! It's brilliant seeing these tables back then and where everybody was!

  • Since the PL started there are only 7 teams who are still there from 1992

  • Those were the days! Liverpool top and man utd shit!!! All utd fans who became fans in 1993 should watch this

  • @falmouth2011 as opposed to the liverpool fans who became fans in the 80s then...history is all you have nowdays.

  • @fsdfsdfdsfdsfable or the 60s and 70s then cos we weren@t bad then either!!

  • hahah, dont make it like this anymore, piano is legendary!!!

  • I noticed that Bob Wilson cocked up with the top half of the forth division by mentioning Colchester woes twice. Good to see the old BBC graphics though :-)

  • What a disgrace, that Fergie should be sacked from Man United.

  • Of the 1st division half the teams from 1990 are still in the Top Flight Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham, Everton, Arsenal, Chelsea, Norwich, QPR, Man Utd and Man City

  • @SBOWsteffan Yeah and the list of teams that have always been in the premiership is even shorter. This year I can see Villa really struggling to keep that record though.

  • SKY has changed football for the worst in my opinion.Millionaire's running around who are out of touch with the average fan, over priced tickets, games spread out over the weekend with different kick off times, clubs buying the title, the premiership full of teams with sugar daddys but no great tradition while great clubs like leeds, forest, wed, ipswich, west ham and southampton struggle.

  • Bristol Clubs bossing division 3

  • I went to the Division 4 playoff final that year, Chesterfield vs Cambridge Utd. Cambridge won 1-0 with Dion Dublin scoring the goal.

  • 1st year of 2 back to back promotions for Grimsby, those were the days 17000 for the final home game of the season against Wrexham when a gary Birtles hattrick secured promotion, how different now!

  • Grandstand may have gone but you can still watch final score and the league tables are hard to follow on a Saturday teatime in 2011 beacuse of the reasons described in my earlier post

  • The difference between April 1990 all the matches except the one sunday tv game have been played and it's Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4 but in 2011 the parping Premier League and Money Money Money SKY ruin everything with matches spread over the weekend with 12.45 and 5.30 kick offs on Saturday and 1.30 and 4.00 kick offs on Sunday with a 8.00 kick off on the Monday and with UEFA playing their Europa League on Thursday Nights more Sunday matches after European weeks

  • poor old bob he sells newspapers these days outside fincley road staion

    what ashame

  • What happened to Celtic? Good grief

  • People may say good old days purely on where their team was then, and where they are now. I bet supporters of teams like Fulham, Wolves, Birmingham and Blackpool would beg to differ.

  • Back when football was working class.

  • I was 6 years old nearly 7 during this time and remember having pork chop, chips and gravy for my tea whilst watching Grandstand, maybe we're very lucky to have all witnessed this part of football. I know when you are young and its new then everything is special but this part of football is something else, this represented 100% football supporters, majority working class lads and to all of you i say "those were the days".

  • @LongevityMUFC What a dinner !

  • villa 2nd, i can always dream

  • @villafan1469 It all went horribly wrong for us from that point of the season!!

  • luton must be the biggest fallers - 20 years on and now in the conference.

think david pleat kept them going a bit longer than nature intended though - they should've gone down years before this point.

  • I can hardly be bothered with the hysterical coverage of football today. As far as i'm concerned this is definitive of football on a Saturday at 5pm. 'Thats the way it is' in the background, those were the days. I was 12 when this broadcast I feel im getting a bit teary, nostalgic and old :D

  • Back in the days when football was interesting lol! Now in Scotland it's Rangers and Celtic first and second (vice versa), and in England it's Man U and Chelsea first and second (vice versa) throughout the fecking season!

  • Great memories, thanks for uploading this! The music brings back so many memories, for ages I just thought it was Grandstand music, didn't know it was an actual song!!

  • As of April 19, 2011 all the positions of the clubs 1. Pool (6th) 2. Villa (9th) 3. Spurs (5th) 4. Everton (7th) 5. Arsenal (2nd) 6. Chelsea (3rd) 7. Southampton (2nd, 3rd div) 8. Norwich (3rd, 2nd div) 9. QPR (lead 2nd div) 10. Coventry (16th, 2nd div) 11. Wimbledon (RIP) 12. Forest (7th, 2nd div) 13. City (4th) 14. Man U (1st) 15. Palace (21st, 2nd div) 16. Derby (19th, 2nd div) 17. Wednesday (15th, 3rd div) 18. Luton (3rd, conf) 19. Charlton (13th, 2nd div) 20. Millwall (9th, 2nd div)
  • @dpinzow Yeah i've got a video on it Millwall could have won the league the way they started the season Teddy Sheringham played for them back then aswell i must upload it it's the 1989 1st division all the games.

  • @dpinzow AFC Wimbledon back in League 2,it only took 9 years

  • Maidstone Utd, I think they went bust a few years after this

  • It's like Premier Manager all over again.

  • Well Bob Wilson sufficiently screwed that up, didn't he!

  • Norwich 8th in the old division one!!

  • My god! I remember watching this evry saturday after a delightful afternoon's shopping at Bilston market!

  • days of blackburn fighting against promotion from the old 2nd... we got in play offs every season for 5 years or somethin like that

  • 3 teams in the bottom half of division 3 are now premier league clubs so there is hope for everyone except brentford. lol

  • Luton in the bottom 3....................then they will avoid relegation on the last day like they always used to back in the 1980s & early 90s - until they finally got their comeuppance in 1992.

  • Luton Town :(

Scummy area full of cunts but still a shame to see how far they've fallen....

    LOL @ Celtic being 4th in a two-horse race...some mega fail...

  • Gay Because Enfield were at the bottom of the Confrence

  • @Hypersonic94returns what are you talking about man, that's the best part of it. The table from the same time the year after makes for enjoyable viewing too.

  • Quite a few 3rd division teams that are now in the top flight. Not all change is bad.

  • oh dear. grim days for Cardiff City - in the relegation places, and on their way to Division 4 for a couple of years. Still good to see old Grandstand again - shame the music was cut off.

  • Luton Town in the 1st Division. Happy days.

  • Crikey, remember these days, when we (Birmingham) used to yo-yo between the old 2nd and 3rd divisions!

  • @feltum you were the West Bromwich Albion of those days as they yo-yo between the Championship and The Premier League

  • Ah. remember when liverpool were good, how times change

  • we're 4 places lower right now in 20th..

  • liverpool top of the league...

won't be seeing that for the next few decades.

  • What's the music called

  • @Hypersonic94returns

It's called That's The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby

  • Poor Enfield went down we should be in the football league

  • Yeah Wednesday went down

  • how times change for the current premier league line up liverpool were the team back then now they are getting dragged through the mud by hicks and gillett, both man utd and man city were well down the table, villa were challenging for the title, spurs were ahead of arsenal, newcastle, west ham, wolves, west brom and blackburn were in the old 2nd division fulham, bolton, blackpool and birmingham were in the old division 2 and stoke were relegated

  • Derby still struggling near the bottom, nothing changes!

  • look at the welling!!!!!

  • aaaaahhh those were the days, man as a villan i cud almost smell that title. and where the fect were man ure - altogether now, "goin down m'lord, goin down..."

  • Does anyone know what happened to both Sheffield clubs that season?

  • Does anyway know what happened to Sheffield Wednesday that season?

  • When football was football...Possibly the last year before inflated wages killed the game

  • Oldham Athletic 9th...oh man the days. We drew with man Utd in the FA semi 3-3, before losing the replay 2-1, unfairly i might add (goalline tech??) We got promoted by winning that league the year after in '91. I loved the theme tune in the background it always gave me goosebumps. Todays theme tune/format alas... does not.

  • @zander469 yes, if that Nicky Henry goal had been allowed, Ferguson would almost certainly have been sacked and the last 20 years would have been very diferent.

  • @southsea1984 Man Utd would have still been as successful even if Alex Ferguson had got sacked cos the Premier League is all about money in Division 1 Alex Ferguson struggled he's always just been a figurehead Man Utd with or without him would still be in the top 4 cos most of their fans now are foreign fakers who just wanna see a football match.

  • @AstonVilla82thebest I can honestly say i have never in all my years read a more ridiculous ignorant comment regarding Alex Ferguson. It astounds me how a person who presumably watches football, can have such a bad understanding of it, and the people within it. You ignorant uneducated pea brain muppet. That's as kind as i can be. (and I'm not a United fan)

  • @walka112 I love how people put after a comment i'm not a United fan like they're in the right Alex Ferguson is never as good as Brian Clough, Clough won the European Cup back to back the league table is stupid nowadays are you telling me that if Ferguson retired Man Utd would finish outside the top 4 it doesn't make a difference as they have the refs on their side when they begin to struggle cos they are richer than other clubs.

  • @AstonVilla82thebest mate, let me be crystal clear. Firstly, I stated I wasn't a united fan in order to point out that I am not looking at the situation through red coloured glasses, and secondly, the impression you gave was not that if Ferguson stepped down- rather that his being there in the first place made no difference to their near two decade dominance of the English game. You say it's because they're rich. But they EARNED their riches thru WINNING again and again and again!

  • @AstonVilla82thebest Furthermore, I haven't noticed any sugar daddies coming in to boost united's wealth. Quite the contrary, their owners have actually handicapped their spending and yet they still remain a major force.I think it's you looking at it thru ANTI united glasses. And remember, Ferguson, aside from making team after team to dominate the English game, STILL remains the last person to have broken the Old Firm grip on Scottish football, and won in Europe while there also. Cop on mate!

  • @walka112 I'm not anti United i much prefer them to Liverpool, Chelsea, i'm just saying they would've had success anyway with or without Ferguson whether that be more or less though we'll never know and when do you see Ferguson plan tactics like the supposed genius that he has all he does is chew chewing gum has a go at Mike Phelan if he gets a substitution wrong & moans when decisions don't go his way but he doesn't mind when the opposition are on the receiving end of it.

  • What is the font used in the graphics?

  • Waaaay up the blades!

  • Blimey, Stoke already down with the Vale a dizzy 11th! Boo!

  • Blimey, Merthyr in the Conference...now they're in the Toolstation Western League!

  • And those Leeds bastards came down and wrecked my town on the May bank holiday !

  • @MrDORSETBOY. What? Bournemouth?

  • @macphersonleedsunite Yes ! Sunny, sunny Bournemouth...........

  • @MrDORSETBOY Those great days in the now "championship. Hopefully back there soon.

  • Blades Glory Owls Down

  • WE ARE BRIGHTON

  • Just to think 20 years ago Fulham were 17th in the old 3rd Division (League One) now they're in European Finals.

Odd seeing all these now Premiership teams in the lower leagues (especially Burnley) shows you how much has changed.

Wouldn't surprise me if in 2030 it's all changed again and teams from League One/Two are up there. Although, with the increasing change and money influence, it might be near impossible.

  • Darlo win Conference, Wycombe 10th, Col U relegated, Celtic and Man U struggling!

  • Swindon Town in the play-offs there...the future looked great after the Wembley win and then tragedy! :(

  • Oxford, Maidstone Halifax and Scarborough. just look at them go!

  • @arleckstheram17 I agree, the sad thing is any club could follow them in the future!

  • fulham in 17th in division three and look where they are now in division 1 in the UEFA (europa) cup final its teams like that that deserve to win the premier league not man utd or chelsea from a aston villa fan see this is why theirs so many man united haters cos they don"t deserve it

  • aaah old skool final score footy results, accompanied by a bit a Bruce Hornsby & the range!! id ave just come back in after avin a game myself just in time for this back in the day after watchin football focus & saint & greavsie when itv had the footy rights & Liverpool were gunna be 1st division champs!!!! boo haha

  • @andrewt008 you remember the old vidiprinter aswell every saturday from 4;45 pm, also was a great year I remember Liverpool beating QPR the following week to take the title, I never thought this'd be the last time though

  • @Moss235 fuckin vidiprinter haha! u could hear it makin noise in the background as well like morse code or summat!? i used 2 like watchin the results on itv as well with the legend that was Elton Welsby! you used to get the goals from maybe 1 yes 1 game with Martin Tyler commentating! This was the time of the big match on a sun atfernoon on itv.

  • @andrewt008 Yes with Brian Moore and Jimmy Greaves in the commentary box, Des used to do Grandstand aswell along with Steve Rider. Liverpool used to feature regularly on The Match, I used to spend all morning nervously hoping they wouldn't get beat, these days I dont worry as much yet they lose far more than they did then

  • @Moss235 & also sometimes co commentators Ron Atkinson, Ian St John as well. Also Alan Parry commentating on games before he went to sky! & Bob Wilson did Grandstand inc football focus with Emlyn Hughes! & it was "on the ball" on itv with t'old Jim Rosenthal this was before it became S&G!

  • Ahh, the days before money grabbing Arabs, and Russian Tycoons pumped millions upon millions of pounds into clubs to make the league unfair . Thanks for posting this

  • Oxford United at the second tier? damn :L ... and as a Swansea City fan, i looked at this and laughed. can you see why? take another look at Division 3. :')

  • with the exception of last saturday (boat race) and this weekend (grand national), saturday afternoons on the bbc are shit now. Grandstand should never have been taken off the air.

and i love the music here, the way it is by bruce hornsby and the range, loads better than what they had before it, jan hammer's crockets theme.

    Bring back Grandstand

  • wow, QPR-back in the days when they were a decent side.Norwich City Southampton and Coventry in the top 10 of 1st division. This is so ancient history.

  • Hahaha! Footie table with a tune...shame fucking Rangers did it like they did back then...(and this fucking season)...

  • Nice to see Man United down at the wrong end. Hopefully one day it will happen again.

  • Absolute class. Great to see Swindon where they should be - upper end of the second tier.

  • Good old Darlo top of the conference, we'll be trying to do the same again next season !

Remember going to the Stafford away game - a certain Mr Collymore was on the bench for them that day...

  • Look at Man United...Those were the days!

  • @anish81 I love this table Villa are way above Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal, & only had to overcome the mighty Liverpool which they didn't both teams were amazing and are now suffering cos of money & the Premier League i say "BRING BACK THE OLD DIVISION 1 & 2" where anyone could win it.

  • @AstonVilla82thebest (Villa supporter here m8)

  • Comment removed

  • @anish81 Respect! Villa fan here too.

  • @AstonVilla82thebest "BRING BACK THE OLD DIVISION 1 & 2" where anyone could win it --- Really? After Villa's last title in 1981, only Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton won the title up until 1992. A decade where only 3 clubs won the title. Just like the last decade of the Premier league.

  • @anish81 yh, alex ferguson allegidly was on the verge of being sacked around this point

  • And twenty years after we came back up, Darlo are heading back down and out of the league. Administration really kicked the hell out of us last year. This time I doubt we'll be back for a long time. Mind you, our fall isn't as heavy as Luton's. Christ footie has really changed.

  • It'll be tough, but Darlo have a good chairman (well, better than George Reynolds) and a great ground - more like a Championship than non-league venue.

I think that you'll be back in the league by 2012 at the latest and hopefully the Championship one day, as you have the infrastructure in place - just need money and players who believe and will fight for the team. That Purcell looks a good buy, try and keep hold of him!

  • look at united there. deep in the bottom half. and Liverpool well on their way to another league title. how its all changed. :(

  • I love this because of the simple fact that Sheffield Wednesday went down in this year. Seeing grown men cry on the Hillsborough Kop still cheers me up!

  • Good to see Enfailed nailed to the bottom of the league at the end, happy days. Having said that it would be nice to have them back.

  • Yes good comment.

  • WARD

  • And to all I appologise for all the comments and debate towards one club in particular from me.

I know the video is about the whole football leagues.

    And not just one team.

    Please forgive me.

God bless you all hope all your teams be ok.

  • @DarthCipient

Happy idea: Demolish the apartment where these 2 clowns live.

AND WHEN BLOW IT MAKE SURE THE 2 CLOWNS ARE HOME.

    SAVE ANFIELD.

Without wish to upset anyone from across the pond can I ask if these 2 clowns are americans?.

Because if someone messed up disney you would have a missile up the bum.

If old trafford is theatre of dreams.

Anfield is the theatre of realities.

Even man utd fans however much rivalry you have must have a fond spot for Anfield.

    AC Milan does.

  • @DarthCipient

Iam sorry this might sound crazy but I just sat about 30 minutes emotional with sadness. They will demolish Anfield.

I have respect for community projects and dont want seem impolite to those involved in them but they will need continued funding or in 5-10 years will break down.

I hope your government will help them.

Otherwise 12 years time walk along anfield road L4 OTH.

And see graffiti on wall bench ect.

CB 4 A- or CB WAS ERE.

Will see sign: ANFIELD WAS ERE.

    So SAD.

  • Sorry Gabby Logan and Jeff Stelling, but you will never be up to the standards of this era of BBC Grandstand with Bob Wilson or David Coleman with cool and simple league table graphics and "The Way It Is" playing gently in the background. I think it might have something to do with having 3 or 4 idiots sitting in a studio watching games on TV monitors that the audience can't watch and being asked questions like "So....Paul Merson...what's going on at Blackburn vs Wigan?"

  • Relegated rock bottom... was a fun two years... come on you Lions!

  • Man United 14th and Celtic 4th in Scotland...p.s love the way that the tables get out of synch with Bob Wilson's voice

  • Oxford United and Maidstone United as league clubs there and Merthyr Tydfill and Runcorn in the conference, Runcorn don't even exsist anymore, this is a blast from the past

  • Look at Fulham and Wigan bottom half of the old div 3 and look at Burnley. My team Aston villa doing well

  • Crazy to think this was the last time Liverpool won the league. Up until then it was Fortress Anfield.

  • Yeah maybe they should show before every game in the Anfield dressing room.

  • @capricious71

    February 1991, 8th or 18th I think.

Newspaper headline: KING KENNY ROCKS KOP!!!!!.

    DALGLISH QUITS AS LIVERPOOL MANAGER.

Days that followed ALAN HANSAN also quit.

That was the day they took the keys of fortress Anfield and hid them.

Souness came and sold players like Aldridge (Top scorer 28 and 32) to Real Sociedad for £1.1m. Beardsley cheap.

  • @bylhamclarabella

Ah, don't remind me about Souness! He really was a disaster, yet at the time it seemed a good idea to make him manager and it took them seasons to recover.

    20 years ago, yikes!

  • @capricious71

    Great player Souness.

But only did good at Rangers because of chequebook.

NO OFFENCE MEANT TO ANY RANGERS FANS WHO MIGHT READ THIS.

    In peace.

At Anfield he manager was un disastro.

My team is Milan and Liverpool 90 werent in europe due to Hysel.

    We said grazie dio.

When Kenny left was like huge GRAZIE DIO.

    Hehehehe.

  • Comment removed

  • Souness destroyed Liverpool when he took over. His signings were a disaster. Liverpool's board also dropped the ball by not expanding Anfield or moving to a new stadium back then. It allowed Man Utd to surpass them on the pitch, and on the business side too.

  • @DarthCipient

As I said Kenny Dalglish left and Manchester United took over.

Do you think they will keep Anfield as a club museum or something similar?. As the Beatles have the cavern and the museum at albert dock.

Have they moved across Stanley park yet.

    Sorry to ask.

    Havent visited for few years.

  • The work on Liverpool's new stadium hasn't even begun yet due apparently to the "credit crunch". As far as I'm aware Anfield will be demolished and replaced with apartments and community projects. Personally I doubt the new stadium will be built at all as long as Hicks and Gillett are running the club.

  • dunfermline and dundee are the only 2 teams that are not in spl this year, but other than that scottish league not change that much team wise.

  • 2 years later man u won the prem , reason is alex fergie in charge which means and referees are a round, which mean alex fergis watch comes in to the game more

  • united in 14th below city wimbledon and coventry.... fergies job on the line haha no fergie time in them days

  • 8 london clubs in top division!!!!

  • 20 years on, Brentford are in exactly the same place..

  • bob said said colchester were bottom far to early before it even came up,but these were still legend days

  • Remember being at Hillsborough on the last day of this season as we got relegated. Horrible memories. Man Utd below Wimbledon, difficult to believe now such a thing could happen.

  • leeds top of league yeah

  • Nice to see Manchester United in the bottom half of the "First Division"

  • Most funniest thing is rochfail still in the bottom div hahaha....nowt changed

  • isn't interesting, so many Div 3 clubs, now playing in the premiership, even a div 4 team.

  • How times have changed, poor old Luton Town, now playing in the conference league.

  • god liverpool were top of league at the of season i always thought people were lying

  • Bad season for Celtic.

  • What good memories! Saturday tea time!

  • This is from Saturday 21st April 1990.

  • Manchester United before the Football Association and Referee assistance.

  • "It's looking bleak for Colchester"...

  • You're so right! This was the season that Colchester were relegated from the league into the Conference. I remember it well, the company I worked for organised a general knowledge quiz in April 1990 and we entered a team called "Colchester Untied". We won the quiz! Thanks for bringing back this memory, yours sincerely, Gus from Colchester.

  • AFter this season, the leeds domination must have started?

  • It's incredible to think that just two years after winning Division Two, Leeds were Division One champions. Could anyone possibly imagine this happening again? I can't. Let's say West Brom win the Coca Cola Championship, what are the chances they will be 2012 Premiership winners? No chance at all. Football has changed, and not necessarily for the better.

  • You can only win if you have the money now.

  • @DarthCipient

    1991?.

Plus if I remember an epic Charity shield V Liverpool.

    4-3.

    Bonjour Mr Eric Cantona.

MAMMA MIA QUE EMOZIONE hehehe. The memories sorry hehehe.

  • It's a shame Leeds didn't keep Cantona. These days, football is crap. Pompey and Palace are fucked, Leeds in the third tier, Liverpool owned by two shitbergs, Glazers dumping debt onto Man U. Chelsea and Man City used as playthings for billionaires. Richard fucking Keys. Chris Kamara still employed. Our leagues don't even have proper names anymore. "Division 1, 2, 3, 4" made sense. Now we've got "The Premiership, the Championship, League One, and League Two?" It's fucking shite!!!
