This was when we first finishes it, so it was limited to one trunk that gets lifted up with a backhoe w/ a thumb. Now he has built a live deck for it, so you can load 4-5 logs that will get chain fed into the infeed. Once we fire the machine up again, I will be putting a more current video up
I love to see how far people will go to avoid swinging an axe.
I may be an axe-swinger myself but this is a fantastic bit of kit. Brilliant.
Am I right in thinking it's limited to a single trunk unless you have lifting gear or a few strong friends standing around? It looks like you'd have to lift it up to about 4 feet high to get onto the infeed.
On this machine there are actually 3 single stage pumps, gear driven off the crank, separated by a clutch so you can disengage the pumps if you need to. Each pump is the same, putting out 49 GPM at 1800 psi. We can run a little more psi, 2000 psi, but it has plenty of power at 1800 psi and it is easier on parts.
The log in this video is oak that is still pretty green. I will make a better video showing its current form and all the functions when we start splitting in the next month or so.
The wedge was 7 pieces of high carbon steel, with the edge machined sharp. The pieces were then fitted and mig welded together to make a one piece wedge. Thank you for all the comments!
