The story is that some out of touch old Republican fool in charge of organizing this was asked by assistants who to book; Senator Old Fool said Colbert, as he was supposed to be an up and coming pundit and very funny... No clue it was a comedy show! Apparently the wife and kids watched Stewart- Colbert and it al eluded Old Fool! Stewart later said " huge balls of pure heat treated Titanium. He was right!

The reason the people at the dinner didn't laugh is because the comedy wasn't meant for them. Colbert's audience was the people who are watching on tv or on the internet, which is one of the reasons he is such a great comedian. He knows who he wants to please. :)
