FYI- Escher did not use this formula to create his one and only image that illustrates this effect (The print gallery). He drew the image without knowing he was illustrating a mathematical formula. Many years later, mathematicians at the University Leiden discovered that "The Print Gallery" could be recreated using mathematics involving complex numbers and the infinite imaginary plane. They subsequently wrote an article that formed the basis for the mathmap formula that I made public on flickr.
