What's the matter with you people - are you deaf? This is awful, she's off key at numerous points in the song - particularly during the first minute.
If you brown nosers actually want to hear the song performed well you should listen to Elaine Paige. But you don't want that, you want to feel warm and fuzzy for liking the underdog to the extent that even when she performs badly (above) you still claim that it's perfect.

Susan is really really talented. Got off to a rough start but picked it right back up quickly. On the downside however, it sounds like she just memorized the lyrics and chanted them along to the tune, without truly listening to just WHAT she was singing. Singing is not just having a great voice, but also telling a story as you go along. My song teacher always drilled me on this. Susan still does a tremendously good job with this song, but I missed that little detail greatly.

What's the matter with you people - are you deaf? This is awful, she's off key at numerous points in the song - particularly during the first minute.
If you brown nosers actually want to hear the song performed well you should listen to Elaine Paige. But you don't want that, you want to feel warm and fuzzy for liking the underdog to the extent that even when she performs badly (above) you still claim that it's perfect.

I agree - and I don't blame SB for that. No doubt I'd be nervous if I was in that situation. But why do you bring the subject of nerves up? Wasn't her performance perfect? You can't have it both ways - either it was perfect and nerves are therefore irrelevant or it wasn't that good and it's nerves that are to blame. So which is it ?

@ValtronW I'd say that in terms of being versatile, Barbra Streisand stands alone. She has a combination of unbelievable clarity, high range and power. Shirley is one of my favourites but she has mostly power... I don't know about Betty. have you ever watched this video of Barbra? very few have... so amazing!

Susan is really really talented. Got off to a rough start but picked it right back up quickly. On the downside however, it sounds like she just memorized the lyrics and chanted them along to the tune, without truly listening to just WHAT she was singing. Singing is not just having a great voice, but also telling a story as you go along. My song teacher always drilled me on this. Susan still does a tremendously good job with this song, but I missed that little detail greatly.

She deserved to win in 2009. Not that group of jungle monkeys who share the same talent as every other NY street performer. Susan has real talent and obviously the public didn't see it at the time.
