For 9 years I've been washing my filter carts and pads under tap water then placing them back in the filter. I've been doing this for my 75, 55, and 29 gallon tanks. They include Emperor 400, Jebao 304, and many others. I haven't lost any fish other than ones killed by other fish.
Am I lucky or is it really not that big of a deal?
Hiya im moving house in march and have got a jewel vision 260...any tips on moving fish safely.3 largest fish ive got 1 red hump eartheater, 1 altum angel, 1 leopard bush fish, 3 giant danio, 1 turquoise rainbow, 2 plecs n 5 corys..odd mix but most we ended up getting them as friends gave up on thier aquariums.cheers!
I would just try to save as much water as possible and bag all the fish up last minute in as much tank water as possible then its a mad rush with the tank to get it set up at the new location before adding the fish back in. I would bag the larger fish individually.
what is the system ya would use for the hole shop. do yas not use the system that they all drain together to a point then fill up. and whats the filter system yas have plus use got a heater in every tank
As we specialise in fish which need different water requirements, all our tanks are individually filtered (either undergravel or internal / air driven filters in sand tanks). We have a heater in every other tank in the sets of 4 small tanks. If it was a centralised system (like most large shops) it would be easier to clean but any fish which were under treatment would affect the whole system - no good.
@pondguru but do yas not have all the tanks air drivin filters i dont mean pumping the water round in one system thats just bad as u get in pets at home thats just rubbish. all them different pumps and heaters must cost a bomb in electric lol
Two air pumps drive all the filters in the shop except the few with internal or undergravel filters. Heaters don't stay on all the time and we are in a really insulated building so it stays quite warm.
@pondguru,i have a planted tank with gravel and bog wood, when i do a clean/waterchange, i lift bog wood to clean gravel, can i get away with pulling out my plants when clreaning gravel? Weekly water changes by the way about 20-25%.......60 litre tank, 6 rosey tets, 7 glowligjt tets and a clown plec!
Some plants will not like lifting up and replanting so I wouls skirt around them. One other option would be to go for planted rock or bogwood which is easier to lift out of the way and moving about won't affect the plants.
Question, can you use fresh lake water to stabilize a brand new fish tank? I bought a Fluval CHI that was very difficult to balance and I kept loosing fish.
I don't see why not, provided the lake water is fresh it should be OK - The only concern would be with parasites which wouldn't (or shouldn't) be present in treated tap water.
Great video. BTW while you looked away to the camera you sucked up a fish. I have a fluval device that has a magnet for tank glass cleaning works very well.
I think you're messing with me, man. lol - I purposely picked a tank with fish which were too big to fit down the pipe as I was worried about that happening.
There are fish which will eat it (american flagfish) but they can be nippy. Specific treatments will kill it and most algae eating shrimps will have a go too.
I keep planning to do a tank by tank video showing what we have in stock but we sell out of secies so quick that I'm never satisfied with the stock levels. We have loads of fish coming in next week so maybe thats the time to do it?
Scalding or soaking in a strong salt solution should kill brown algae. Algae eating shrimps are the natural solution unless there are fish which will eat them in the tank.
Just a bog standard powerhead. The size you need wilbased on the size of your tank and since you are in the US and we are in the UK, best shop around your area for prices.
@pondguru Would be good to see one on filtration. I've got a fluval 305 for a 260 litre, I use floss at the top of the 305 and have used products to clear but there are still small white specs in the water so any tips would be great.
Lots of the tanks in our shop have little specs of white stuff floating around in them and I've found that no matter how large the filter is, they just seem to still be there. In one of the tanks I put an air driven filter (see 'excellent moving bed filter at Tyne Valley Aquatics' video) using a new type of media and the water went crystal clear but I don't know why for sure. Maybe the media or the moving bed process but I can't confirm that until it has more testing,
i wanto to work in your shopp haha

For the fish you have currently, sand would definitely be a better option.

my five gallon tank's gravel is covered in dwarf hairgrass and other plants. what would you recommend for a tank like that?
ievolvedfrommonkeys 1 month ago
Definitely some dwarf shrimps, otocinclus as algae cleaners and maybe galaxy rasbora as the mid water fish? There are many options I suppose.
