  • i prefer this version, the placebo version is pretty naff actually, but they have done other good covers

  • God some people here obviously don't understand personal preferance, whos to say someones wrong because they prefer one version of the same song. You have your own opinion, don't shit on someone elses because its not the same as yours.

  • When the mimes visit

  • love the smelly strap on insult, gr8.

  • Just heard this on National Radio. Good to hear him using his lower vocal range. I thought it was 10cc

  • ...e chi lo dimentica???(Saro-Pozzallo)

  • Il passato non si può dimenticare, se nel passato c'eri tu. ( Corrado Mazzallo - Noto ) Black Out 1980

  • A really great song!!!!!

  • Divinaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

El canta maravillosamente bien!!!! Me encanta!!!

    Gracias. Besos

  • for me one of the best songs ever!

  • esta muy chula la cancion

  • It was a big success in france because it was the song used in the add for the renault cars.

  • Oh this song it's very interesting, I like this song and the placebo's cover, I think that both songs are very good,

some covers sucks!! but in this song the cover went cool!!

  • such sad taste in music lol

  • Nothing's better than the ORIGINAL...

  • his best song by far,yet didn't make the top 40 in the hit parade WHAT A TRAVESTY.

  • People shouldn't complain about Placebo covering this song. Accept it, covers happen. Just appreciate the differences.

  • man this makes the cover of placebo sound like shit. because it is better. you can feel the story better its more authentic and the clip is also nice. its such a shame that they covered it and fucked upthe song. covering songs is for pussies. because everyone could. its more a copy than a creation. its beyond bullshit. lying to himself.

  • @axxerr

i think brian molko proved himself already

in the last 10 years & covering isn't for pussies

thats probably the most retarted thing i've ever heard in my entire life. It's not beyond bullshit u silly person, it's a tribute which shows dedication to the original..

djeez lol it's like u want people to think ur stupid commenting like this (':

  • YOURE JOKING RIGHT?

read some books you fuckin idiot. Makes me wonder that you know the alphabet.

A cover version is a copy of a unique work.

Its without a doubt totally disputable on a philosophical view.

every person who copies works is either a poor busker or a stupid superstar.

Cover versions are only showing how much commercialized the process of creating art became with all those stupid singers and MTV bullshit. Guess why every song is about 3-4 minutes?

    you will never find out

  • simion, placebo are fucking shite!-i used to be a huge fan , until i heard them cover "big mouth strikes again" by the smiths, and i thought wtf!, only a moron covers a song like that...and indeed a song like this...a cover isnt about sounding like them, its about conveying the emotion in the original, robert palmer is a genius, placebo are not...and musician worth his salt would know not to cover a classic, the fucking idiots, and that makes you an idiot too, you fucking smelly strap on!

  • wtf

im not even goin to answer that

  • True. Placebo suck. I had to go review them once for a music magazine and after about 20 minutes I couldn't work out why they sounded so big for a 3 piece band. Then a friend who was also at the gig saw from his seat that they had a keyboard player hidden behind a huge stack of speakers. And anyway, they were dull as shit.

And oh yeah, Johnny & Mary is a great song. I hated it as an 8 year old when it came out. I think the video just used to scare me for some reason. What a wuss.

  • One singer, one song ! ! !

  • by far Robert Palmer's best!!!

  • also to the other people who are like yeah your all dumb for saying cover version better you just as bad for hateing

  • Dear Maynard,

Claiming that Placebo's rendition of this song is superior is enough to show the world you have no idea of what good music sounds like.

  • Fell in love to this song when I was 14. Brings back such memories.

  • stop running johnny! placebo's cover is a little weak...

  • can anyone tell me what this song is about?

  • Listened to Placebo's version, and this one beats it by miles. Atleast Palmer sounds straight. :)

  • with all due respect to Robert...but Placebos version is better.

Same goes for their versions ofRunning up that Hill", originally performed by Kate Bush and "Bigmouth Strikes again" by Morrisey.

    Placebo is everything.

  • placebo fan to but but the orginals are better in my eyes and bigmoth strikes agian was done by the smiths

  • Over 20 years on and it still sounds good. Great record

  • avfc456, you must be about my age, late 40's? The memory starts to go! It's actually thirty years old! Still, I agree with you my friend. Great song!

  • Sadly not! I'm in my twenties, but have a vast 80's collection, much better than the vast amount of rubbish I hear today

30 years old? Amazing, wonder if we will hear the likes of Placebo in 30 years?

  • brings back a lot of memorys thanks

  • Way to ruin the song by comparing it to other covers, bunch of pricks.

  • I like the Notwist version best!!

  • this is really a great song.. i like it very much.. but i think i like better the placebo's cover.. their sound is fantastic!!!! =)

  • A cool song, will lives forever!!!!

  • muy bueno

  • This song reminds me of my last long relationship. Such a wonderful song. My God, was Robert Palmer sexy!

  • does someone know who played the jazzy version of this song? The one I really like and I just cannot get to it through google. Help?

  • more

  • He has such an awesome voice.... i don't think it would matter much what he would sing, he'd make it sound interesting!

  • such a great song! =) =) =)

  • It reminds me of my last year in high school in 1980.

  • Che peccato che Robert Palmer se ne sia andato presto, però!!!

  • what is this song about

  • @blackmafia931; if you look up the lyrics, it tells you pretty much exactly what the song is about :o) Just read it like a story :o)

  • You can't beat a bit of early '80s electronic excellence and this tune is another fine example. Great stuff!

  • super sweet track. timeless.... Thanks uploader A+ Perth, Australia

  • "May 16" played by Lagwagon sounds like this great song!

  • Electronic beat with a sweet melody. This is my favorite Robert Palmer song. It's one of those short songs you can listen to over and over and it never gets tired!

  • sometimes i compare the lyrics with me. great great great song... i love it! it means a lot to me

  • Is the "Mary" person in the clip a woman or just Robert dressed up???

  • yep must agree a classic

  • what a classic tune to the late Robert palmer, They dont make them like this anymore!

  • Lame video, but cool song.

  • Placebo's cover is much better!

  • No way - Placebo sound like a bunch sniveling emo whiners

  • Placebo is fucking awesome!!! but yea i think i like this ver better than the placebo one.

  • Wow.Placebo makes so much sense now.

  • One word.....

    Peugeot

  • One word

    RENAULT

  • I was thinking about Mr Palmer and wondering what he was up to just 2 days before he passed. Wonderful thoughtful talent. RIP Robert.

  • RIP Rob...you gave us all some fantastic music to cherish.

    jawohl

  • este temazo en barraca..era diferente...q fiestas inolvidables...ya se sabe q spain is diferent.saludos

  • BFBS - Verden FRG 1980 # 1

  • The man created some kickin music over his career. Very much under-rated IMO.

  • Rober Palmer rules for ever!

  • High quality tune!

  • Me encanta. I love it.

  • this is great. I think i might be falling in love with this robert palmer. he's great. where has be been my whole life? why did i not know of his brillance sooner? i always just thought of him as that simply irrisistible guy. man had serious talent.

  • E' stupenda questa canzone...A me piace molto anche nella versione dei PLACEBO!

    Ciao a tutti.

  • really,really a wonderful song...thank you robert

  • Temazo brutal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i remember taping this song off the radio way back, still as good now as it was then. thanks for posting.

  • Sorry, my english is not very well. Can someone help me, i dont understand this song and the video.

I only know, that this song is awesome :)

  • I love this song!!!

  • soooooooo schööönn ^^

  • your so fucking right =)

  • He's singing about the simple choices life gives us. It really comes down to Adam and Eve, if you think about it................

  • When I listen to this song, I kind of wonder if he is singing about his marriage. I know that he eventually divorced his wife and went to live with his girlfriend.

  • wow, how many years came by since I heard this song last time?! ^^

    Great!! Awesome ^_^

  • I have always liked this song. This is the first time I see the video.

  • Anyone have any idea how to play the bassline?

  • It's D,D,D,A(8x's) At The Intro And Before The First Verse It's D,D,D,A(4x's)B,B,B,F#(4x's) D,D,D,A(4x's) F#,F#,F#,C#(4x's) G,G,G,D(4x's) A,A,A,E(4x's) Then Just Repeat It From The First Verse Until The End Of The Song. Also There's A Organ Part That Is Played After The First Verse That Is Over The Bassline And It's G,G(An Octave Lower Than The First G.) I Hope This Helps You Out A Bit.

  • My pleasure.

  • Thank you! I am a bit embarrassed by your lovely comment! I would not call it eloquence. But thanks for helping me to enjoy this song more. :)

  • Yes! You said it much more eloquently than I. We don't have to look too hard to see the truth. Take it for what it is.

  • Ah yes, I see. Johnny and Mary are generic names. Kind of like the archetypal male and female. Gender is interesting. Masculinity and femininity have their parallels.

  • Okay sorry, I got it wrong. It is all relative anyway. Just enjoy the song!

  • It's just the difference between men and women, simple as that. Johnny (men) doesn't know what he wants and Mary (women) will always wait for him.

  • you are such a fool, petra

  • video shows that the 70 and 80s where rich eras for pop music , the 90s very poor!!! the start of house music had something to do with it???

  • I'd like to know that as well

  • i love it but what does the song sybolize.

  • I am just taking a stab in the dark here (I am not good with song meanings or symbolism). The title is "Ballad of Johnny and Mary", so I am guessing the symbolism has something to do with these two (doomed?) lovers. And Robert Palmer looks like a 1940s style newspaper reporter dude in the video. The video is very postmodern late 70s early 80s new wave style. I should maybe listen to the lyrics more closely. Sorry if this is totally the wrong idea! Robert Palmer had some great music videos.

  • wow, I can;lt belive it. I love Robert Palmer. I must admit his untimely death took me by suprise as well. What a pity. This man's music will always be charished. I love this song. Its the new wave of 80's!!!!!!

This guy always knew how to hit it!

  • He took the brand new genre of New Wave music, and shaped it into something different - The man was always ahead of the curve.

  • I had no idea that Robert Palmer has died. He's been gone a while.

  • I like the song it's really catchy i've had the tune in my head for 2 days lol. Don't know about the clip,it's a real shame Robert Palmer is no longer with us,i love 80's music&I'm 18

  • because of vice city im betting

  • I love this song!

  • I miss Robert Palmer....

  • is robert no longer with us?

  • Yes Robert is gone now....PammieKay

  • great song

    5*

  • Cool? Yup. British cool.

  • That is so New Wave, I was 17 when this song came out. They used to play this a lot at some Branchees Discotheques in Montreal.

  • Only Mr. Palmer could put such an ingenious spin on New Wave music, he was the very definition of cool.

  • what a classic tune

  • How very sexy and trippy. I've discovered something new about myself watching this: I have a thing for mimes, it must be all those provocative finger gestures! Oh, well something else to be ridiculed for!

  • Hey lonlely,

You are entitled to what you like and the way it makes you feel. Don't worry about ridicule for something like this. It is usually coming from someone that can't feel anything themselves anyway so they take it out on you. Ignore them. Enjoy yourself. Party on!

  • Talent and the kind of voice I could listen to for hours. More proof only the good die young.

  • FUCKEN MAGIC

  • i wonder what caused Robert Palmer's fatal heart attack 26 September 2003 at age 54

  • great artist RIP

  • one of the greatest ever R.I.P.

  • Beautifool song.

  • Never knew this was Robert Palmer who I thought I didn't like. Sure stands the test of time.

  • This to me was Robert at his best. Its a shame this song never caught on in the states , radio or anything .Great 80's song .

  • Don't know your age or locale, but Pittsburgh had a great station in the '80, gone now, but this was a hit here.

  • Not here in the Midwest.Thank God for early MTV

  • Well, it caught on with some of us...one of my top ten ever (Nowhere girl, Golden Brown, Still Ill, It's my life, Dance Away, etc..) and it was in the movie "Summer Lovers" I think.

  • Yes, it was used in Summer Lovers--but that version was done by Tina Turner.

It's interesting to compare it as sung by a woman.

  • Daveyn1: you've got good taste in music my friend

  • buenísima canción así como su video.

  • I get really emotional when listening to Robert. He is such a classic. Love you forever...and it is not "coke" but cigarettes that shortened his life.

  • This one really hits something deep inside. Maybe because it's so simple. A unique sound forever.

  • We will miss your classy style and music

Robert Palmer, you were one of the antidiva rockstar...

  • master piece

  • Legend...

  • COOL!! and・・・

  • We can hear this music in an ad for the Renault 11 and for other 80s Renault.

  • Renault why ?

  • It used to be in Renault tv spots...

  • Legend

  • i love you Robert (will always do) you should have gone easier on that coke though but yea...

  • My favourite Song of Robert Palmer!R.I.P.

  • Real life.

  • I agree with zacek1970 we do miss you Robert.

this was one of the first vids i had ever seen.

on HBO JUKEBOX. When you had a seperate antenne?? way before cable. yea im old!!

Donny iris was on also! AGNES, and AH LEHA.

Those were the days! 1980 or so?????

  • One of the great voices in music.

Mr Palmer is a timeless classic.

  • WE MISS YOU ROBERT!!!!!

  • the intro of this sounds exactly like "beat the clock" by sparks

  • o.O i think you have some serious problems with your ears
