So the plan is to use geothermal to produce electricity use the electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen which is then passed through a fuel cell to produce electricity. Use the hydrogen and oxygen to power an internal combustion engine much more efficient.
@intimeslikenow Another thing is that geothermal can be taped anywhere with the Hot Rock Energy. It doesn't need to be near a fault line.Renewable energy for ever.
@intimeslikenow Hydrogen combustion engines aren't as efficient as gasoline/diesel engines. Using Hydrogen fuel cells gives you better energy efficiency atm. Until we can better extract the energy that hydrogen holds the cells are the way to go.
America will not be ready because the right here in the U.S. are only trying to milk the cow for all it is worth the oil cow even if it leaves our country at a disadvantage to the rest of the world in renewable energy! America created solar panel over 50 years ago, and that technology has set on a shelf since it's creation.
They have used the argument that is is not perfected as a reason for not going green, were TV's perfected when they came out, or radios, or any other technology? No!

@Shamaroth yes- that's what's so wonderful about Iceland- why do we really need more people anyway? If population grown prediction come true, the world will become a disgusting, terrible place in less than 100 years. Let's hope there will always be places like Iceland!
@ICEPEDITION Iceland's model is wonderfull and fascinating, nevertheless, corporations, private entrepeneurs and emerging economies need 3 basic things to grow, the foremost are "markets" or bigger populations everytime whose consumptions habits create "wealth" or "surplus value" and therefore economic growth. Yeah, funny. What killed their banks was their carry trade. One could snag some krona and make a profit by trading to euros. Of course the toxic sub-prime garbage America's banks traded all over the world didn't help.
All this debate is trivial, because there will come a point were a choice wont be available anymore and this will be our smartest, long overdue and only decision.
Yes areharald, I was aware. Were you aware that Hydrogen is more volatile? This would be why they drop Hydrogen bombs instead of Molotov cocktails. I think there are safer alternatives.
A hydrogen bomb is actually a nuclear weapon. How it works is both complicated and highly classified but it involves fusing hydrogen molecules to amplify the destructive nature of the nuclear detonator. I may not have a degree in nuclear physics but I'm pretty sure they don't just ignite hydrogen gas to make a mushroom cloud.
It's true that hydrogen is highly flammable, there's no question about it. You should remember though that cars don't detonate on impact like they do in the movies and a car crashes that's likely to rupture a hydrogen fuel tank is likely to kill you anyways whether or not the hydrogen ignites.
Hindenburg started burning because of the paint that was used. There was not enough knowledge back in those days.Normal gas can ignite from about 10 meters from it's source, that will never happen with hydrogen because it is so light that it will rise up to the sky immediately. Hydrogen is very safe compared to gasoline, but because hydrogen 'can' give a loud bang it scares people. In general people are scared of things that they do not know, that is called primal behavior, use your mind instead
Come on, if the United States were a little more forthcoming in it's alternative energy policies the past decade(s) similar like countries as Germany and South Korea for example u would've drove a hybrid at this very moment.
As it is now, we will have to wait a couple of years or decades more.
Oh, I was just wondering why you think a country with, until last week, a per capita GDP of over $40,000 (which is among the world's highest) would be full of "white trash bitches" overnight. I think their econmomy will recover, as will others.
Anyway, happy holidays inside your home, inside America.
what can i buy with krona? nothing! krona is dead. they will join E.U. and switch to the euro. krona national symbol is dead. iceland will be assimilated into E.U.
iceland owes $65 billions and their GDP is something like $5.4 billions. how can they pay off the debt. they will be slaves to their creditors.
I agree that the krona is dead(At he moment at least), but Iceland has always been a fishing economy not a financial economy and it will recover within 10 years or less.
And we also have alot of untapped natural resources at our disposal.
Don't get me wrong the quality of life will decline(slightly) and we're in for some tough times. But it will be fine.
iceland will not be fine. iceland has food stocks for about 3 to 5 weeks. after that they will need to do something, like go out and fish. since icelandic people are very protective of their fishing industry, they will resist joining the E.U. resistance is futile because they will go hungry soon. either join E.U. or die on their own.
their financial institution is now control by the government just like north korea or cuba. hahahahaa. commie iceland.
You are a stupid man. We have enough food in the county for everyone. Fish and meat. We are not your everyday european here. We are hard working innovative and ready for everything.Thereis so much in the pipes in Iceland.Tourism,Trolls,Elves,Hidden people, vikingsagas, geneticresearch, hydrogenandothergreenenergy, waterfalls, geysers,Ice,snowvolcanos, greatnature. Wehavesurvivedinthislandformany centuries.Weareofvikingblood. Strong bloodandsmartblood.Wedontthinklikeyou.Wewilljusttakeuptheoldhabits
tourism? hahhaa. u are joking. who is willing to exchange krona for gold or other real currency? the only vikings i see are trolls roaming around the world looking for someone willing to take the worthless printed krona. hey viking, let's me know if you found somebody willing to take your national trash - krona. iceland is isolated now. get use to the fact that the rest of the world is ignoring you icelanders. your country is broke and now begging IMF for pocket change just to have the light on.
i would if i could. there is no way to exchange U.S. dollar for krona. nobody wants krona, except your own country. how can i spend money there? u want me to walk around like a zoombie in a bankrupt country doing nothing like your unemployed people? besides, your country inflation is like zimbabwe. i see a lot of zeros on your currency. your government even consider dumping the krona in favor of the euro.
i bet your country has problem paying your salary as police officer.
Lol there are no mass protests. It is all very peaceful. The news media portray a unreal picture of it. What you see as a big protest aint so big at all. Because we are so few. I'll even escort you hehe lol
You know what is funny? Both Saevaroa and I speak/type better English than you despite being Icelandic. If you are going to run around and point fingers and shout out offensive comments then you can expect more fingers pointing back.
Needless to say, of course I do. Generalizing shows ignorance and a short fuse. If I may, I will indulge myself into insulting you but you will probably not understand what I am saying. I believe that from whatever country you are from that you lack in manners and, judging from your spelling, intellect.
hahahaaa. u are just some homeless garbage from a bankrupt country trying to show off whatever u have left. get a life. there is no hydrogen economy in iceland. there will never be one. your thermal energy is taken over by foreign aluminum mills. they are in control of you and your future. u have nothing left. so many young icelandic people are already moved out of that tiny island in drove. only the garbage like u still stuck there. krona is dead. reykjavik is dead. iceland is a wasteland. LOL
@KhmerD0g and yet thry still have one of the world's highest standards of living..... by the way, I noticed you don't tell where you are from on your channel, perhaps you could share as your country must be so much better.
Iceland is already bankrupt. food is getting expensive and jobs are hard to come by. Iceland needs IMF to bail them out of a jam they got themselves into.
@KhmerD0g HAHAHAHA oh the USA, of course, how might I have guessed. So tell me, how much debt is the US in. Last time I checked it was $12, 939, 712, 037, 976 or about 13 trillion dollars, or about 42, 000 dollars for every american. This stat is from the 17th of May. And it increases $ 4 billion a day. Also Icelands unemployment rate is 7.7% while the US is 10%. You do the math smart ass.
@KhmerD0g hahaha alright then, if that's your idea of fun lol. but i don't think we'll callapse, it's only gotten better since the recession so odds are it will contimue to do so. And i don't know about the USA but here in canada there are government signs for our economic action plan everywhere highways, arenas, public recreation centres etc. and their investing in all this infrastructure and creating jobs, and in my city stores are being built and already existing ones are being renovated
You should come and see how Iceland is. It is not as bad as people are talking about in the news. You would get a lot for your dollar because the krona is low. The problem as I see it is that many believe that we are better off outside EU. Of course with a small currency like krona the flu comes faster and harderthanformostcountriesbut we are in apositiontobesooneroutofitthanmost othersandthatisbecauseof howcircumstancesarespecialhere.Look atournephewsfromFaroeIslands. Theyarejustdoingfinenow:-)
:D well iceland´s reykjavík is small and cosy :) i been to big cities in europe, once to ur country. it was lil too big for me :) our countries both have their plusses and minusses. im just sooo annoyed these days how people are going mad, throwing shit at each other.
This is dummy old tech.: STILL the FUEL FIXATION! Solar modules can split the H2O WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING! Why don't they think of it? Excuses (like Texans)- not enough sun. Easy Hydro-electricity, so why bother? All over the world the GRIDS are breaking down: so yes, it IS worth the "bother" to build new-type vehicles that are truly Fuel-Less! Poor Islanders, it is so simple, yet far beyond their limited imagination & skills.
oh and goodforrj we used to have a military base there until 2006 when the base closed and i had to move to england + there are no hydrogen reserves dumbass hydrogen is a man made fuel
Iceland has both extremes in one place, hot and cold temperatures through Steam and Snow, they need to hook this infrastructure up to a few stirling engines, to make hydrogen which is then placed in the stirling engines instead of air. Every icelandic home could have hot water pumped to them from the springs and then this could power a stirling engine in each home with the hot water passing one side of the stirling engine and the other end connected to the exterior of the home. Yep, Awesome.
if the United States decides that it wants hydrogen, it will just take Iceland over (they don't have much for a military) and take control of the hydrogen reserves just like they do in the middle east with oil. It is so sad but so true. I hate our government.
LOL! The US taking over Iceland if it wanted too.LMAO!! Ever heard of Nato......? Iceland is Nato as is the US and you think the rest of Nato would let big mighty America take control here? NOT!
funny but probably true. water becomes the desired commidity like oil is today. and we already know that countries LOVE to fight over stuff like that.its happening today,(as you already know, no doubt) ;)
I've saw this station on my island trip the previous month... but why the hell the price is in euro (9'17) while it's the Islandic Kourone (ISK) which is the official currency in Reyklavik (and they don't accept euro) ??
Iceland is positioning itself to be the new Middle East, and once the world has drank up all the oil they will be left to boil in the hot desert alone and no one will give a shit!!
people remember that oil has alott of influence in our goverment structure. So to think that anything that will treaten that will be allowed is dumb. I wish we could cast aside or dependency on oil. That would shure show the stupid arab country how fucked their economy would become.
I hear them talking about cars with hydrogen and a rechargeable battery (plugged). So you can use the battery for shorter distance and hydrogen for longer distances. It is very viable and feasible. I think they already have those cars. We will probably see it in couple of years.
@Roy23Gold. There's very little energy lost in the electrolyzing-fuel cell process.
A fuel cell engine is far more energy efficient than a combustion engine.
You're right about the storage problem though. However it is because hydrogen is stored in form of gas, not in liquefied form.
There's also the problem that you require electricity to "make" hydrogen and if you pollute to make electricity anyways then it becomes counter productive to switch to hydrogen since it's supposed to be green.
Some people say it was designed that way by the farmers that settled in (that did not want to be vikings and kill each other) so that the vikings would go to greenland and not kill and rob the Icelanders.
'Saevaroa', that is as good an explanation as any I've heard. Beside, a 'bit of deception and mimickry has frequently been used to aid survival both in Nature and in Human societies. Canada for example originally meant a lowly village in one of the native tribe's tongue. Too bad that the French and later English explorers didn't understand the word, and conquered the whole continent regardless. :D
As they say; sometimes you win, sometimes you loose.
No you misunderstand me. The naming of Iceland and Greenland was designed in a way to bluff the vikings to go to Greenland. Wether it worked or not is not the case. Just the fact that it was dont to fool potential attackers. There are stories about vikings sailing to greenland and as far as america. I never said that Greenlanders that is the eskimos were vikings. The vikings did not settle in in greenland. They died out. And no one knows why. Maybe because they could not tolerate the cold
Aha...now I understand, what you mean. That could actually be a good idea, but I don't think it worked, since both Iceland and Greenland was discovered and settled by Vikings. Im sure Ingólfur Arnarson and his fellow Viking people, Knew what they was dealing with. They were busy as you know. Adminstrate Northern Great Britain and found Dublin + raid rest of western europe, but also help their Swedish viking brothers in raids eastwards
Eirik Raude or Eirik The Red founded the first Nordic settlement in Greenlandin 985. He was Born in the Jæren district of Rogaland, Norway. But That was long time after the other Norwegian Ingólfur Arnarson, founded the Icelandic settlements. Greenland settlements vanished during the 14th and 15th centuries, likely due to famine and increasing conflicts with the Inuits.
You are only half joking I think because. Iceland was first called snowland because all they could see first was snow. And where they settle first in in Greenland is in east part and on a very small area there there used to be a green place. So they both got their names from a relatively small areas. Or isolated circumstances. But I like better the story of the vikings that became farmers in Iceland calling it those names to divert other viking attackers to Greenland.
Why? because of the name? Iceland is green and greenland is mostly covered in ice. Last winter it was raining all the time here in iceland but very little snow.
Welcome in Chinese Iceland! ...

So, how do you make sure that a country, who is about to prove that oil is unnecessary, fail? Kill it through the banks. Petro-Dollars win again!
FakeDaveRowe 3 years ago
Yeah, funny. What killed their banks was their carry trade. One could snag some krona and make a profit by trading to euros. Of course the toxic sub-prime garbage America's banks traded all over the world didn't help.

It really is such a beautiful country.
Incredible landscapes. I have to visit.
All this debate is trivial, because there will come a point were a choice wont be available anymore and this will be our smartest, long overdue and only decision.
adamdren 3 years ago
Yes areharald, I was aware. Were you aware that Hydrogen is more volatile? This would be why they drop Hydrogen bombs instead of Molotov cocktails. I think there are safer alternatives.
applenaut 3 years ago
Whoa... back up.
Choken1 3 years ago
It's true that hydrogen is highly flammable, there's no question about it. You should remember though that cars don't detonate on impact like they do in the movies and a car crashes that's likely to rupture a hydrogen fuel tank is likely to kill you anyways whether or not the hydrogen ignites.
Choken1 3 years ago
Did we all forget the Hindenburg? You want people driving around in bombs?
applenaut 3 years ago
You do know that gasoline is actually flammable?
areharald 3 years ago
Hindenburg started burning because of the paint that was used. There was not enough knowledge back in those days.Normal gas can ignite from about 10 meters from it's source, that will never happen with hydrogen because it is so light that it will rise up to the sky immediately. Hydrogen is very safe compared to gasoline, but because hydrogen 'can' give a loud bang it scares people. In general people are scared of things that they do not know, that is called primal behavior, use your mind instead
insAneTunA 3 years ago 2
thanks for clarifying that. my bad.
applenaut 3 years ago 2
true that!! hydrogen still needs an ignition source!!

Never see it because of the world's policy??
Come on, if the United States were a little more forthcoming in it's alternative energy policies the past decade(s) similar like countries as Germany and South Korea for example u would've drove a hybrid at this very moment.
As it is now, we will have to wait a couple of years or decades more.
The fact is we are running out of oil.
There is no other way. This is the future.

KhmerD0g 3 years ago
Oh, I was just wondering why you think a country with, until last week, a per capita GDP of over $40,000 (which is among the world's highest) would be full of "white trash bitches" overnight. I think their econmomy will recover, as will others.
Anyway, happy holidays inside your home, inside America.

Iceland is not and will never be bankrupt (It's literally impossible)
Iceland also has the most educated people per capital and will be just fine.
And also the Ice is in Greenland.
So your just wrong on just about everything
Aronbj 3 years ago
what can i buy with krona? nothing! krona is dead. they will join E.U. and switch to the euro. krona national symbol is dead. iceland will be assimilated into E.U.
iceland owes $65 billions and their GDP is something like $5.4 billions. how can they pay off the debt. they will be slaves to their creditors.
KhmerD0g 3 years ago
I agree that the krona is dead(At he moment at least), but Iceland has always been a fishing economy not a financial economy and it will recover within 10 years or less.
And we also have alot of untapped natural resources at our disposal.
Don't get me wrong the quality of life will decline(slightly) and we're in for some tough times. But it will be fine.
Aronbj 3 years ago
iceland will not be fine. iceland has food stocks for about 3 to 5 weeks. after that they will need to do something, like go out and fish. since icelandic people are very protective of their fishing industry, they will resist joining the E.U. resistance is futile because they will go hungry soon. either join E.U. or die on their own.
their financial institution is now control by the government just like north korea or cuba. hahahahaa. commie iceland.

KhmerD0g 3 years ago
I challenge you to come to Iceland :-)
saevaroa 3 years ago
i would if i could. there is no way to exchange U.S. dollar for krona. nobody wants krona, except your own country. how can i spend money there? u want me to walk around like a zoombie in a bankrupt country doing nothing like your unemployed people? besides, your country inflation is like zimbabwe. i see a lot of zeros on your currency. your government even consider dumping the krona in favor of the euro.
i bet your country has problem paying your salary as police officer.

i would not want to come to iceland (for now) because mass protests are taken place. i'm afraid of my safety.

Carriochella 3 years ago
YEAH. I think if they wanted to, they would. They are pieces of shit.
Goodforrj 3 years ago
if the United States decides that it wants hydrogen, it will just take Iceland over (they don't have much for a military) and take control of the hydrogen reserves just like they do in the middle east with oil. It is so sad but so true. I hate our government.

Interesting - but fails to discuss the problems of Hydrogen storage in cars due to volume of liquified hydrogen being 9x that of Gasoline
Roy23Gold 3 years ago
if it weren't for oil companies who want a slice of the hydrogen sales, cars would be fitted with the mini electrolysis machines on board.
that means they would produce hydrogen on demand. no need for storage. way better for the environment
jazzeffc 3 years ago 2
However - As things stand today it takes more energy to split water than the resulting Hydrogen can deliver
Roy23Gold 3 years ago
i dont think thats true. (sorry can't provide evidence, not a scientist :P)
jazzeffc 3 years ago
Sorry -- but it has to be true. If it were not the case we would have "perpetual motion". One could simply loop it round "ad infinitum"
Roy23Gold 3 years ago
The first and second laws of Thermodynamics ought to cover it.
Hydrogen is a storage medium, not a primary energy source.
nick1181 3 years ago
I think that is just a matter of product develpment. If we look at history the first petrol car wasn't a very good one I believe.
saevaroa 3 years ago
I hear them talking about cars with hydrogen and a rechargeable battery (plugged). So you can use the battery for shorter distance and hydrogen for longer distances. It is very viable and feasible. I think they already have those cars. We will probably see it in couple of years.
saevaroa 3 years ago
i think we will never see those cars according to the world's policy!
MassiPacchio 3 years ago

They way I know Iceland is a misnomer. It should be called Greenland and vica versa. I'm only half-joking.
wotan20 3 years ago 4
Some people say it was designed that way by the farmers that settled in (that did not want to be vikings and kill each other) so that the vikings would go to greenland and not kill and rob the Icelanders.
saevaroa 3 years ago
'Saevaroa', that is as good an explanation as any I've heard. Beside, a 'bit of deception and mimickry has frequently been used to aid survival both in Nature and in Human societies. Canada for example originally meant a lowly village in one of the native tribe's tongue. Too bad that the French and later English explorers didn't understand the word, and conquered the whole continent regardless. :D
As they say; sometimes you win, sometimes you loose.
wotan20 3 years ago
Greenlenders aren't they eskimos? I don't think we can call them vikings
brassas 3 years ago
No you misunderstand me. The naming of Iceland and Greenland was designed in a way to bluff the vikings to go to Greenland. Wether it worked or not is not the case. Just the fact that it was dont to fool potential attackers. There are stories about vikings sailing to greenland and as far as america. I never said that Greenlanders that is the eskimos were vikings. The vikings did not settle in in greenland. They died out. And no one knows why. Maybe because they could not tolerate the cold
saevaroa 3 years ago
Aha...now I understand, what you mean. That could actually be a good idea, but I don't think it worked, since both Iceland and Greenland was discovered and settled by Vikings. Im sure Ingólfur Arnarson and his fellow Viking people, Knew what they was dealing with. They were busy as you know. Adminstrate Northern Great Britain and found Dublin + raid rest of western europe, but also help their Swedish viking brothers in raids eastwards
brassas 3 years ago
Maybe you could say it worked because all the vikings that tried to settle in in Greenland died out.
saevaroa 3 years ago
Eirik Raude or Eirik The Red founded the first Nordic settlement in Greenlandin 985. He was Born in the Jæren district of Rogaland, Norway. But That was long time after the other Norwegian Ingólfur Arnarson, founded the Icelandic settlements. Greenland settlements vanished during the 14th and 15th centuries, likely due to famine and increasing conflicts with the Inuits.
brassas 3 years ago
I think it is fascinating how far they sailed and in what conditions. I heard that some of them sailed as far as Constantinobel.
saevaroa 3 years ago
You are only half joking I think because. Iceland was first called snowland because all they could see first was snow. And where they settle first in in Greenland is in east part and on a very small area there there used to be a green place. So they both got their names from a relatively small areas. Or isolated circumstances. But I like better the story of the vikings that became farmers in Iceland calling it those names to divert other viking attackers to Greenland.
saevaroa 3 years ago
Why? because of the name? Iceland is green and greenland is mostly covered in ice. Last winter it was raining all the time here in iceland but very little snow.
