i think Hard Corps is the best one. (never played 4, Hard Corps: Uprising or rebirth) the graphics are good for a Genesis game, and the weapons, the characters, the gameplay, the music and the difficulty are great, i love that game :)

I haven't played Contra SS on PS2 or Contra 4 on DS (I just bought the wii rebirth game), but honestly, Contra III on the SNES is not the best game in the series. Hard Corp on the Genesis blew me away when I played it and that was years later when I discovered it on an emulator. The music, gameplay, graphics, etc. of Hard Corp are just amazing. Way ahead of its time and seriously underrated.
@ryanw430 Sorry, but Navgtr HATES Sega. Notice: They havn't reviewed a SINGLE Sega game, EVER. I find this to be rather unreasonable. It's one thing not to review 3DO, Atari Jaguar, etc. games, but no Sega? I'd play the fanboy card but they've reviewed PLENTY of Playstation games.
The problem in this game was the system it was made for: It didn't permit programmers a lot of things. It was not their fault that, for instance, trees looked like a wallpaper, it's just that to make a back ground with "real" trees would cost them a few small enemies or something else.
Something else: I just saw hard corps' videos here and personally I think it was a more fun game than contra 3 (SNES), but Contra 3s highlights mentioned here are far better. My vote's for Contra 3

Played Hard Corps and Contra Snes, Hard Corps had the branching paths, Cool bosses and more and interesting characters, but for some reason I had more fun playing Contra on the SNES.
@ruekurei88 I think that playing Contra III gave us an early feeling of controlling a character in a movie, plus it had exciting situations and music like in the "bike"/missiles stage. Those are its greatest highlights and made it a good game.

Contra 3 is a great game, but I feel Contra Hardcorp is better. It has better boss battles. 4 characters with 4 unique weapons and 5 possible endings. All these features give it incredible replay value.
shattered soilder is probably the only "newer" contra game i liked. i heard contra 4 was badass though

this game looks like they were trying to force 3d.
going from 2d to 3d is not simply a copy and paste process. the concept changes.

Contra 3 is a great game, but I feel Contra Hardcorp is better. It has better boss battles. 4 characters with 4 unique weapons and 5 possible endings. All these features give it incredible replay value.
