The second time was the prosecutor's fault, who dropped the charge of violating parole. It's Washington's fault for posting bail for a psychotic rapist.
After reviewing the file, Huckabee issued a notice of intent to commute Clemmons' sentence to 47 years and five months. When 30 days passed and no objection to the pending order was received, Huckabee granted the commutation.
That decision made Clemmons immediately eligible for parole, which the parole board granted. In many states, such as California or New York, Clemmons would have been released from prison well before the 11 years he served before being paroled.
Judge Humphrey, who was not the original judge in the case, urged that Clemmons be granted leniency. "I favor a time cut for Maurice Clemmons," Humphrey stated in his 1999 recommendation. "Mr. Clemmons was 16 years of age when his cases began in this court. I do not know why the previous judge ran his sentences consecutively, but concurrent sentences would have been sufficient."
Additional evidence has also emerged that Clemmons violated his parole on multiple occasions in Arkansas and Washington State, and authorities in both states failed to keep him incarcerated. Had they done so, Clemmons would never have gunned down four police officers in Lakewood, Wash., last Sunday Nov. 29, regardless of Huckabees commutation of his original sentence.
"In this particular case," Arkansas Sixth Judicial Circuit Judge Marion Humphrey tells Newsmax, "I think Gov. Huckabee had reason to act as he did. He didn't just act on his own. I think he took into consideration recommendations from people such as myself. In my opinion, what he did in 2000 was responsible. And it is something that I thought should have been done, as well."
Gov. Huckabee "did the right thing" with the evidence he had before him and, at the time this guy had only committed robbery with NO weapon. Had served 11 yrs. hard time, since age 16. Huckabee thought this was unfair. (IT WAS). Now, in hindsight, of course he wishes he hadn't given the commutation, but as great as Governor Huckabee is, even HE can't see into the future.

Each state is different, but in Arkansas, a governor doesnt initiate a parole—the Post Prison Transfer Board does after it conducts a thorough review of an inmates file and request. The board then makes a recommendation to the governor, who decides to grant or deny

The courts have no choice but to let these animals out of prison early. With non violent drug offenders serving lengthy mandatory minimum sentences there just isn't enough room in prisons to keep the real animals in.

Why commute a sentence of 95 years after only 10 years?? No one should get 85 years shave off his sentence. 95 years is not given lightly and Huckabee should not have treated it lightly.

Huckabee only saw the injustice given to this guy.. he was a 16 year old given a 108sentence. Huckabee just commuted the sentence to 40+ years. The parole board and washington state bailing him out were the things that let him be at the area to kill those cops. Then, Clemens moved to Washington and committed a rape crime. But the judge in Washington just gave him a cheap bail which is just wrong.

O'Reilly's idea of a "tough" question occurs four minutes into the video when he asks Huckabee whether or not he would agree that there is no excuse for the poor judgment of the two judges in Washington state -- to which Huckabee says "I totally agree"
If you listen closely you can hear the off-stage whisper -- "Yeah, let someone else take all the blame..."
Really tough question for the good governor to answer, would you agree?

Fair and balanced? This is how Bill O' Reilly handles his boy Huckabee with kidd gloves and smothering kisses because Huckabee is a fellow Fox News commentator.
O' Reilly bends over backward to accommodate Huckabee and to demonstrate how sympathetic he is with the predicament Huckabee finds himself in, as the governor who commuted the guys' sentence -- but I've never seem O' Reilly show such reasonableness and understanding for someone outside of his stable of favorite horses....

Huckabee states "I take full responsibility for my actions of nine years ago. I acted on the facts presented to me in 2000. If I could have possibly known what Clemmons would do nine years later, I obviously would have made a different decision. But if the same file was presented to me today, I would have likely made the same decision."

Also, Huckabee just commuted his injust sentence from 105 years to 46 years..I mean the parole system was the reason he got out, and then washington state let him out on bail just a week ago.. Overall It was alot of people's fault, yet.. I wouldnt be one of the crazed who says that Huckabee killed these officers. I mean overall it was MC fault in the end, he chose to do this.

You want something to blame? How about an overcrowded prison system, which leads states to enact "booking bail" systems or not try to extradite child-rapists because of the costs. Clemmons got away because the system is worn thin with all of this "law and order". We need answers, not more of the same.

The courts have no choice but to let these animals out of prison early. With non violent drug offenders serving lengthy mandatory minimum sentences there just isn't enough room in prisons to keep the real animals in.

I understand the reaction to pin this on Huckabee. He is skirting his full portion of the blame for this, sliding it off on the AR prosecutors. Certainly if it was a Democrat Gov who had reduced his sentence, Faux (and Huckabee) would not be at all hospitable or understanding.
That being said there was a whole line of failures that allowed this monster to be set free. I don't want to see Progressives politicizing this. We're above that. Let the conservative slime ooze back into the sewer.

The left has no need to do all that. They can just watch as the hypocrisy unfolds. This is slowly being politicized by the righ as they find a way to attack the president with it but we all know that Huckabee can never be elected dog catcher. Actually, Huckabee took responsibility for his part in this, but that's just it, it was just a part. It wasn't even when this guy was the way he is now. How was Huckabee suppose to know this guy would do this? They are responsible for their own actions. Besides, Governers of Arkansas can't parole or release anyone anyway. I see you at least mentioned there were others involved and so it looks like you don't have some foaming at the mouth bias waiting to pounce on any mistake the guy does. Kudos.

Why commute a sentence of 95 years after only 10 years?? No one should get 85 years shave off his sentence. 95 years is not given lightly and Huckabee should not have treated it lightly.

You realize what the sentence was for, correct? You also realize the guy wasn't killing and raping individuals at that point? What is a guy suppose to do with what he had at the time?The Gov. didn't take it lightly.Burglary and theft getting over 100 years for that when a person was 16. Murderers sometimes don't even get that many years. I think he had the best judgement at the time,but he didn't even have the power to release the guy anyway. Why aren't you blaming others who were more involved?
