  • Actually, the word was JELLO

  • You met john Belushi? Awesome.

  • The word according to the script is "shudder"!. Look at D-day on the floor, it describes what he is doing perfectly.

  • it was dead ants

  • It's 'gator', dumbass.

  • @Mochoman9911 Yer Mama Mochoman....get her to wipe yer nose!

  • Pretty cool. I never knew what the word was either.

  • GATOR

  • cool story!

  • GATOR!!!!!

  • epic..

  • its gator!!! me and my friends do tht all the time whenever this song plays at a party or something greatest movie ever

  • I am pretty jaded about using the term cool these days. But your story is pretty fucking cool.

  • Man, you are old, californiamagic dude!

  • I never thought about what the word was and thought that it was something that triggered a "holy rollers" kind of thing. Your "how did you know my name" story was very funny. Thanks for sharing your story and the info!

  • You idiots, he says "Gator!" If you watched the documentary about the making of the film Animal House they say it over and over that it is GATOR!

  • HE'S SCREAMING ' TOGA'

  • really? you had to ask if it was gator? lol i knew that the first time i saw the film haha

  • @ArthurZ101 Uh....yeah, this was before VCR's and U had to watch the film in a theatre, and there was no rewind until you paid to see the movie again, and the scene came up again.... after paying 2 see it in the movie theatre over 20 times.. ( i never thought of finding a copy of the national lampoon book, DOH!) i could never figure it out.... you really only have a millisecond to hear what he says, and if you were to read all of the comments on this video, you will find Im not the only one!

  • @ArthurZ101 well aren't you cool

  • looked like Nigger to me.

  • is it Gator from alligator which the dancing on floor style recalls ???

  • funny but bullshit. he is saying "go low!: Any freshman at college knows that...

  • it's "get down" you sillies

  • Ive seen this movie millions of times. he says "DEAD BUG!" he's drunk so he just mumbles it

  • isn't it jello?

  • The word is gator. It is a dance that originated in the 1960's in juke joints in South Louisiana and was picked up by frat boys who hired bands from those clubs. Louis Louis was the original gator song. The original dance is done by crawling on your elbows and knees like an alligator. The "dead roach" dance in Animal House is a poor but fun imitation and this movie changed the original dance forever. Now frat boys at LSU do freeform gator dances to Shout.

  • What do you think happens after we die?

  • its turtle

  • u met john belushi, and u asked him a stupid ass question... wow

  • Are you sure he didn't yell "SPARTA!!!!!!!!" ?

  • Can you lease tell me what he was like a mean was he talkative, shy, funny, Can you please tell me what he was like?

  • GATOR!!! It's a dance...

  • What he said was "Turtle".

Turtle on its back, trying to flip over again...

  • What he said was 'Turtle'.

Turtle on its back, trying to flip over again....

  • it was gator i knew the the first timem i watched the movie and i wasnt born unil the late 80's.

  • I guess I'm the only old fart from florida commenting on this video because if you were from florida and grew up in the 60's you would know that what they are all doing on the floor after he yells, "Gator!" is a dance called the Gator. Yep, you do it on the floor so you look like an alligator (University of Florida football team are called the Gators). In the 60's it was considered very risque because your female dance partner is supposed to be laying under you.

  • It sure was. I was in band in high school when this movie came out but I hadn't seen it yet. I was dancing with some guy who all of a sudden drops to the floor and I thought he was having a seizure. I didn't know what to do and then I saw someone else drop to the floor and yell "gator" and realized what was going on.....me without my CPR lol

  • Toga.

  • Toga

  • Toga.

  • GREAT STORY!!!

I am 35 and when i first got turned on to Animal House years ago, i had the same question. My mom who knows every old dance move (if you can call it that lol) known to man instantly knew the answer was GATOR! I would love to have met John , he is one of my hero's.

  • dude ur fucking stupid how did you not know that

  • Yes the magic, send you to the floor giggling like Jello word is. Gator!!!!!!!!! I just happened to see a special bio on the movie. And here is a bit of Animal trivia, it was filmed in Oregon, not New England.

  • having been on the end of the camera the word is actually dead ants as any good english rugby drinker will know

some pissed up man shouts it out in the bar

and last person down on the floor with legs and arms in air shaking " like a dead or dying ant " HAS TO PAY FOR A ROUND FOR ALL

    COLIN WILKO GREEN ARIZONA

  • The dance is the alligator or "gator" for short. Chances are if you've been to a proper college party in your life you've done the gator.

  • sadly missed rip

  • Why does he yell Gator?

  • @mhennessy12 thats what they call that when ya dance on the floor like that. its aligator actually.

  • lay down?

  • For anyone who goes to UF, such as myself, this is exciting news.

  • He is yelling "get down". it wasn't that hard to hear.

  • Didn't think it was that hard to figure out...

  • I see I wasn't the first one to post the Eagle's quote! Ooops...

  • He did yell "gator" which was a common dance at frats. You laid on the floor like they all did after he yelled it. The Eagles also used it in their song "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" which was about Frats and frat parties. "You got down and did the gator, then half an hour later, you were barfin' all over your girlfriends shoes..."

  • Wow, what an amazing story, thanks for sharing that with us. I was born in 1980 so I don't really know a whole lot about Belushi, but I do know that he was funny as hell , probably the funniest guy ever, and if he were alive today, he'd probably still be making movies. SNL isn't what it used to be back in the day, I watch it now, but it just seems funnier back then.

  • Its "Gator" , a game that goes by the same name as "Dead ants".

  • yea he says gator

  • i though he yelled lay down!!!

  • the word is GATOR!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I always thought he yelled, "JELLO!"

  • i think he said TOGA as in TOGA party

  • its turtle

the dance move is the turtle

  • I thought it wwas dead ant

  • Yeah dude, notice they all drop to the floor and start doing the Alligator.

  • "Well there was beer all over the dance floor... And the band was playin' rhythm & blues... Half an hour later, you dropped down and did the GATOR till you started barfin' all over your girlfriends shoes...

Well THE GREEKS DON'T WANT NO FREAKS, yeah THE GREEKS DON'T WANT NO FREAKS' ~The Eagles

  • you should have asked him if he saw the naked girls

  • Duh! Of corse it is Gator because that is what they all drop to the floor and start doing! You should be ashamed!

  • Hell yeah! I thought everyone knew the Gator.

You got down and did the Gator, half an hour later

You were barfin all over your girlfriend's shoes

'Cause the greeks don't want no freaks

The greeks don't want no freaks

  • Ohhh shoot !!! I just posted the same thing before I saw your post... LMAO : P The Aligator was always one of my favorite oldschool dances... It's really spastic, huh ??? : )

  • He was an enigmatic being. Whatever took him was of his own accord, and we can only reflect now upon his genious...to make us laugh, at ourselves. May he RIP.

  • John and Jim Belushi grew up down the street from me in Wheaton, Illinois, they lived on Elm Street. Which coincidentally is the Elm Street that Wes Craven named his movies after. Wes went to Wheaton college for a semester or two. True story.

  • Its gator

  • you got to meet john belushi?!?!?!?!

    im so freakin jealous!!

  • tooo effin cool! the story behind this and to finally know!!!! awesomeness ;-) truly miss his humour.. RIP JOHN Belushi

  • this guy under me is a no talent white southern kiddy porn watching hik

belushi you da man i hope to see you up there but not any time soon bro

  • It does look like "Gator" to me . . . .

Thanks for posting this--I just used it to settle a heated bar debate. :-D

  • Just so you know, I had to EMBARASS myself in front of John Belushi when I went to talk to him I said: "excuse me, Mr. Belushi" and he replied "John" (meaning I could call him by his 1st name) turns out my 1st name is also "John",

so when Belushi says "John"... I look at him

bugged eyed as exclaim with astonishment: "HOW DID YOU KNOW MY NAME"??? John Belushi and all the movie extras within earshot roared in laughter at my nervousness. I finally got to ask him my question.. the result usee here!

  • That makes for an even BETTER story! *L*

  • Thanks for that story. It really made me laugh!

  • Comment removed

  • except that it came from the man himself (gator), I'd swear he said "jello", which would account for the quivering. However, I also remember a bunch of fighter pilots in a bar and if anyone said "dead bug", everybody would pretty much do the same thing (drop to the floor and shake like a dead bug.

  • gator!!!!

  • aka ..MR PRESIDENT ?

SO WHAT JOHNNY WAS A NIGGA TOO ...FAT MOTHA FKR..GOD BLESS HIS BLUES LOVIN SOUL

  • what does he actually say?

  • If you had watched the video in its entirety,

the answer is revealed at the VERY end.

  • Man you must not of had great sound back then everyone knows it was gator perhaps you should have asked someone

  • lucky you man

  • If only the internet was around back then.

  • it's gator, stupid.

  • Yes, it's Gator, a dance from the 70's.

  • it's dead ant.

  • I just saw a interview with director John Landis...." Belushi yells,,,GATOR!!"

  • I've watch this clip so many times and I think that is the most stupidest dance move ever yet it's still entertaining

  • I always thought it was TURTLE??!?!!?!!

    Oh god!!

I'VE BEEN WRONG THIS ENTIRE TIME!!!

  • Gator, thats what he said

  • but yes it does sound like gator if you think about it

  • i think he said shake on

  • the movie is animal house

  • heh, if you do think about gator it does sound like gator interesting

i have no idea how i got here in this page, i have no idea what movie this is, and i have no idea who john belushi is, i dont know how i ended up in this page

  • Hey everybody... boipinoi604 wants to know

    what movie this is....

    anyone? anyone? anyone?

  • Oh it's from the movie animal house, I've never seen nor heard of that movie or this john belushi guy is

  • ...get...out

  • oops sorry i meant: yeah it could be gator lol!

  • @californiamagician Animal House I'm a teenager and I know that one.

  • then do a little research..and u will know everything u wanna know..:):)

  • haha

  • John was messing with you if that's what he said, he said. The word is Jello!

  • my dad said hes been watching this movie since the day it came out trying to figure out what that word was. then when he found out we had a computer for 2 years he told me to search it up and this is what i get. GATOR!!!

  • Im glad to know I wasnt the only one dieing to know what the word was, glad I could be of help!

  • I thought it was nigga...loool

  • Now....I can sleep!

  • We were still doing the "gator" and having toga parties when I was in college in the mid-80s. Fun times.

  • Well... I can die happy now. One of life's most puzzling questions has been answered. Thanks for posting!

  • It always sounded like "GATOR!" to me but they don't really act like gators when they're on their backs. They look like sizzlin' bacon strips or something. LOL!

  • Gator! You've cleared up 2 things for me. The song, The Greeks don't want no freaks, has Glen Frey shout out Gator.....I never knew it was an actual dance.

  • I am at peace now.....

My journey is over, thank you for clearing that up....

  • "Gator." No question about it. That is the name of the dance they are doing, with bellies to the floor.

  • Bellies to the floor? Watch it again...they are on the backs.

He said "jello" and was the name of the dance they were doing.

Skatekristad is a moron...slower the Forrest Gump on a twelve pack.

  • sounds like cheddar to me. but jello makes a lot more sense.

  • S-H-U-D-D-E-R. Shudder. SHUDDER!!!! dictionary says...To vibrate; quiver: The airplane shuddered in the turbulence.

  • it was obviously gator, i got that the first time i watched it. they all get on their backs and move their arms around, kinda like an alligator that would be on its back

  • You know what.... I think Your right! THANKS!

  • GATOR. No question. 110% positive. I went to college in Virginia in the mid seventies and we were still doing it then. The yelled command in the midst of a party caused the faithful to roll and thrash around on the floor.

  • OMG you are dumb. Its Gator. Like in ALIGATOR

  • GATOR?

    Thats what he said?

  • That is what he said...GATOR!

  • GATOR!!!!!!!

  • yo, zepplin! it's not yeaher, because you can clearly tell that the tip of his tongue touched the roof of his mouth in the middle which is the "T" in GATOR!!!

  • Oh yeah, we used to do the "Aligator" back in the 1960's. I still love to watch "Animal House" when it comes on TV. One of the funniest movies of all time.

  • I love this movie!

I saw it when I was 16. Now Im 21

I met john in this movie, Im from argentina and I love him!!!

    He is the best!

  • "Turtle"!!!!! a well known drunken dance.

  • Well known to jfglistens anyways

  • FYI - the guy playing bass in the band (Otis Day and the Nights) is none other than former Corvallis, Oregon resident Robert Cray!

  • I have no idea what he actually says, but we used to shout "dead ants" and hit the floor. I actually met John Belushi one time back in probably what was 1978. This was at a Rolling Stones gig at a hockey rink in Oshawa, Canada. The Stones were there because Keef got caught with heroin at the border, and I guess Belushi came for the road trip. He came out the back of the arena for a piss and there were a bunch of us standing there. He shook hands, chatted for a bit and went back in to party...

  • i think he is yelling 'YEAA' but saying saying it like 'Yayer!' like some ppl do in cheesey movies

  • You know, I think your right....THANKS!

  • not worries man, anything 4 a guy up 4 a toga party. he wudnt b saying anything else, it wud jst b a cue for thm 2 dance. see u at a toga party my friend!!!!

  • It's gatoring and other secret reptilian activity only known by members of the Delta house.

  • I remember a garfield cartoon in which john gets a visit from an old friend from school and they also do the "gator dance" on the floor.

Damn, you met belushi!? I envy you.

  • Back in the mid 60's there was a "dance" done at college beer bars around U Cincinnati called the "Alligator" which was, in effect, lying down and dry humping on the dance floor. Although Bluto screams "Gator", they are doing the "Roach" simulating a Raid sprayed dying cockroach. N/K and a bit of a continuity error. Never paid attention to the word but did know they were doing the Roach.

  • i always thought it was "turtle", like a turtle on it's back

  • i always knew it was gator, really, come on

  • i got to agree with you, and i first saw this movie at 11, don't get me wrong it's easy to get confused with the crowd and the band, but i did know it was the word "gator" in fact i think they have it in the subtitles

  • i always thought he said "sizzle", like sizzle like bacon, cuz som1 did that 4 a homecoming assembly...owell, thats cool anyway

  • I always thought he screamed Jelly...and I assumed that they started to jiggle like jelly, LOL! Thanks for the info, Cali!

  • Personelly, I thought he said get down.

  • tom hanks also yells this in his movie Bachelor Party

  • true... it´s the gator dance XD

  • The alligator (or just 'gator' in this case) is an old dance move. It's been mentioned in a few songs too :P

  • for sure, its def gator

  • i thought he said get down

  • The Eagles had a minor hit with a song called "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" which i think mentioned doing the Gator. I think it was on the Long Run, maybe 1980?

  • wtf is Gator? XD

  • yeah man wtf is Gator??? lol

  • NO NO NO NO. Your all wrong. All vaild answers but the word was JELLY!!!. Now Does anyone agree with me?

  • Watch his lips. He's yelling "Tiger!"

  • So Dan13LS7One you would disagree with Belushi himself right now with your argument... I explained that Belushi himself cleared up any confusion on what word was said, and he clearly told me the word was GATOR. You are in denile

    and I pity you!

  • nobody with common sense would agree with you as there is no real way that he said "jelly" why the hell would a college guy yell "jelly"? there's no reason because that's just silly at best. and i go with the poster of this vid, you directly go against what John Belushi cleared up, the point of this video, and say Belushi is wrong on what HE himself said? You, good sir, are WRONG!!!

  • gator. It's a college thing...you fags who don't understnd...just suck.

  • GATOR DANCE... derrrr

  • DEAD ANT

  • John Belushi is Albanian.

    wikipedia. org/wiki/John_Belushi

  • it's "gator" and the word "yell" is a VERB. Apostrophes do not belong in verbs!!!!

  • THINK HE'S YELLIN "TURTLE!',,,as when a turtle on its back is stuck shaking in its shell and can't get up or turn over

  • If you watch the movie Bachelor Party with Tom Hanks, he says and does the exact same thing. Check it out.

  • what the fuck is GATOR

  • it's the(alli)gator dance...

  • That's the name of the dance. In "The Greeks don't want no Freaks" by the Eagles, they sing; 'we got down and did the Gator, and half an hour later you were barfing all over your girlfriends shoes!' I thought everyone knew that too!

  • Cool!!!!

  • what is he saying?

  • i always though he was yelling "get down!". thanks for posting!!!

  • i thought he said YAYA!!

  • I always thought it was turtle.

I've been wrong for 33 years.

  • Thanks. I appreciate your passion.

  • gator

  • i thought everyone knew that
