I never thought about what the word was and thought that it was something that triggered a "holy rollers" kind of thing. Your "how did you know my name" story was very funny. Thanks for sharing your story and the info!
@ArthurZ101 Uh....yeah, this was before VCR's and U had to watch the film in a theatre, and there was no rewind until you paid to see the movie again, and the scene came up again.... after paying 2 see it in the movie theatre over 20 times.. ( i never thought of finding a copy of the national lampoon book, DOH!) i could never figure it out.... you really only have a millisecond to hear what he says, and if you were to read all of the comments on this video, you will find Im not the only one!
The word is gator. It is a dance that originated in the 1960's in juke joints in South Louisiana and was picked up by frat boys who hired bands from those clubs. Louis Louis was the original gator song. The original dance is done by crawling on your elbows and knees like an alligator. The "dead roach" dance in Animal House is a poor but fun imitation and this movie changed the original dance forever. Now frat boys at LSU do freeform gator dances to Shout.
I guess I'm the only old fart from florida commenting on this video because if you were from florida and grew up in the 60's you would know that what they are all doing on the floor after he yells, "Gator!" is a dance called the Gator. Yep, you do it on the floor so you look like an alligator (University of Florida football team are called the Gators). In the 60's it was considered very risque because your female dance partner is supposed to be laying under you.
It sure was. I was in band in high school when this movie came out but I hadn't seen it yet. I was dancing with some guy who all of a sudden drops to the floor and I thought he was having a seizure. I didn't know what to do and then I saw someone else drop to the floor and yell "gator" and realized what was going on.....me without my CPR lol
I am 35 and when i first got turned on to Animal House years ago, i had the same question. My mom who knows every old dance move (if you can call it that lol) known to man instantly knew the answer was GATOR! I would love to have met John , he is one of my hero's.
Yes the magic, send you to the floor giggling like Jello word is. Gator!!!!!!!!! I just happened to see a special bio on the movie. And here is a bit of Animal trivia, it was filmed in Oregon, not New England.
He did yell "gator" which was a common dance at frats. You laid on the floor like they all did after he yelled it. The Eagles also used it in their song "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" which was about Frats and frat parties. "You got down and did the gator, then half an hour later, you were barfin' all over your girlfriends shoes..."
Wow, what an amazing story, thanks for sharing that with us. I was born in 1980 so I don't really know a whole lot about Belushi, but I do know that he was funny as hell , probably the funniest guy ever, and if he were alive today, he'd probably still be making movies. SNL isn't what it used to be back in the day, I watch it now, but it just seems funnier back then.
"Well there was beer all over the dance floor... And the band was playin' rhythm & blues... Half an hour later, you dropped down and did the GATOR till you started barfin' all over your girlfriends shoes...
Well THE GREEKS DON'T WANT NO FREAKS, yeah THE GREEKS DON'T WANT NO FREAKS' ~The Eagles
Ohhh shoot !!! I just posted the same thing before I saw your post... LMAO : P The Aligator was always one of my favorite oldschool dances... It's really spastic, huh ??? : )
He was an enigmatic being. Whatever took him was of his own accord, and we can only reflect now upon his genious...to make us laugh, at ourselves. May he RIP.
John and Jim Belushi grew up down the street from me in Wheaton, Illinois, they lived on Elm Street. Which coincidentally is the Elm Street that Wes Craven named his movies after. Wes went to Wheaton college for a semester or two. True story.
Just so you know, I had to EMBARASS myself in front of John Belushi when I went to talk to him I said: "excuse me, Mr. Belushi" and he replied "John" (meaning I could call him by his 1st name) turns out my 1st name is also "John",
so when Belushi says "John"... I look at him
bugged eyed as exclaim with astonishment: "HOW DID YOU KNOW MY NAME"??? John Belushi and all the movie extras within earshot roared in laughter at my nervousness. I finally got to ask him my question.. the result usee here!
except that it came from the man himself (gator), I'd swear he said "jello", which would account for the quivering. However, I also remember a bunch of fighter pilots in a bar and if anyone said "dead bug", everybody would pretty much do the same thing (drop to the floor and shake like a dead bug.
he says "gator" short for alligator..check out the song land of 1000 dances..its mentioned there too..as well as the movie Bachelor party were Tom Hanks does the Alligator on the couch..we do it religiously at our toga parties..john B. r.i.p
heh, if you do think about gator it does sound like gator interesting
i have no idea how i got here in this page, i have no idea what movie this is, and i have no idea who john belushi is, i dont know how i ended up in this page
my dad said hes been watching this movie since the day it came out trying to figure out what that word was. then when he found out we had a computer for 2 years he told me to search it up and this is what i get. GATOR!!!
It always sounded like "GATOR!" to me but they don't really act like gators when they're on their backs. They look like sizzlin' bacon strips or something. LOL!
Gator! You've cleared up 2 things for me. The song, The Greeks don't want no freaks, has Glen Frey shout out Gator.....I never knew it was an actual dance.
it was obviously gator, i got that the first time i watched it. they all get on their backs and move their arms around, kinda like an alligator that would be on its back
GATOR. No question. 110% positive. I went to college in Virginia in the mid seventies and we were still doing it then. The yelled command in the midst of a party caused the faithful to roll and thrash around on the floor.
yo, zepplin! it's not yeaher, because you can clearly tell that the tip of his tongue touched the roof of his mouth in the middle which is the "T" in GATOR!!!
Oh yeah, we used to do the "Aligator" back in the 1960's. I still love to watch "Animal House" when it comes on TV. One of the funniest movies of all time.
I have no idea what he actually says, but we used to shout "dead ants" and hit the floor. I actually met John Belushi one time back in probably what was 1978. This was at a Rolling Stones gig at a hockey rink in Oshawa, Canada. The Stones were there because Keef got caught with heroin at the border, and I guess Belushi came for the road trip. He came out the back of the arena for a piss and there were a bunch of us standing there. He shook hands, chatted for a bit and went back in to party...
not worries man, anything 4 a guy up 4 a toga party. he wudnt b saying anything else, it wud jst b a cue for thm 2 dance. see u at a toga party my friend!!!!
Back in the mid 60's there was a "dance" done at college beer bars around U Cincinnati called the "Alligator" which was, in effect, lying down and dry humping on the dance floor. Although Bluto screams "Gator", they are doing the "Roach" simulating a Raid sprayed dying cockroach. N/K and a bit of a continuity error. Never paid attention to the word but did know they were doing the Roach.
i got to agree with you, and i first saw this movie at 11, don't get me wrong it's easy to get confused with the crowd and the band, but i did know it was the word "gator" in fact i think they have it in the subtitles
The Eagles had a minor hit with a song called "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" which i think mentioned doing the Gator. I think it was on the Long Run, maybe 1980?
So Dan13LS7One you would disagree with Belushi himself right now with your argument... I explained that Belushi himself cleared up any confusion on what word was said, and he clearly told me the word was GATOR. You are in denile
nobody with common sense would agree with you as there is no real way that he said "jelly" why the hell would a college guy yell "jelly"? there's no reason because that's just silly at best. and i go with the poster of this vid, you directly go against what John Belushi cleared up, the point of this video, and say Belushi is wrong on what HE himself said? You, good sir, are WRONG!!!
That's the name of the dance. In "The Greeks don't want no Freaks" by the Eagles, they sing; 'we got down and did the Gator, and half an hour later you were barfing all over your girlfriends shoes!' I thought everyone knew that too!
Actually, the word was JELLO

The Eagles had a minor hit with a song called "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" which i think mentioned doing the Gator. I think it was on the Long Run, maybe 1980?

Watch his lips. He's yelling "Tiger!"
WildwoodFleur 4 years ago
So Dan13LS7One you would disagree with Belushi himself right now with your argument... I explained that Belushi himself cleared up any confusion on what word was said, and he clearly told me the word was GATOR. You are in denile
and I pity you!
californiamagician 4 years ago
nobody with common sense would agree with you as there is no real way that he said "jelly" why the hell would a college guy yell "jelly"? there's no reason because that's just silly at best. and i go with the poster of this vid, you directly go against what John Belushi cleared up, the point of this video, and say Belushi is wrong on what HE himself said? You, good sir, are WRONG!!!

THINK HE'S YELLIN "TURTLE!',,,as when a turtle on its back is stuck shaking in its shell and can't get up or turn over
ttronc21 4 years ago
If you watch the movie Bachelor Party with Tom Hanks, he says and does the exact same thing. Check it out.

it's the(alli)gator dance...
distanza101 4 years ago
That's the name of the dance. In "The Greeks don't want no Freaks" by the Eagles, they sing; 'we got down and did the Gator, and half an hour later you were barfing all over your girlfriends shoes!' I thought everyone knew that too!
