Cash always did a lot of covers. It varies from album to album, but even early on, about half of his songs were covers. He had a talent, though, for picking great songs and making them his own.
the devils right hand just went off on the ten people who disliked this song. And may you rot in hell for disliking one of the greatest musicians this world has ever seen!
You might want to try searching a little more. I am in complete agreement that pop "country" isn't real country, but I think if you are going to complain about it, you have to support artists who are out there doing real country without much recognition. Try Wayne Hancock, Elizabeth Cook, Rachel Brooke, Jayke Orvis, Justin Townes Earle for starters. Sure they have some songs about drinking or relationships, but that has been true of country since the beginning.
@quinny44 I never said Mr. Cash wrote the song. I said he told a story with his music, and put his true feelings into it. I never gave him credit for writing the song. I know he didn't. Johnny only wrote about half of the songs he recorded - I love him, and think he was a genius, but am surprised how often I encounter Cash fans who assume he wrote songs he covered.
@darlincommitme I think it's because Johnny had a way of making any song his own. He chose covers carefully and with an eye to making his version unique and unforgettable. His version of "Hurt", or his version of "Ain't No Grave" are unbelievable as well. That voice just makes one believe that the singer was personally involved and lived that song. It's really musicianship at its finest. I love him as well.
Thanks Johnnie, now I can make out some of those lyrics. I love Steve Earles accent but I'll be double-damned if I can make out some of those words. Both versions are good. So who really wrote this? Certainly Cash pre-dates Earle? Where is Earle from? He sounds a little like east Tennessee or western Carolina (where I lived for nearly 20 yrs. Some allusions about Texas too?
Steve wrote the song - Cash is older, but that dosn't mean he couldn't record a younger artist's song. Waylon also covered it, before Guitar Town (Steve's first album) came out and Steve was writing for other artists.
And Steve is from Texas. He mostly grew up in San Antonio area, though the family moved around. His mother was from Nashville, and he lived there for years, so it makes sense you hear both accents. Lives in NY now.
Thanks for the info on Steve. Yeah the demographics definitely seem to indicate the origin of the accent(s). And I understand most of what I'm hearing!
If you are ever looking for Steve's lyrics (and yes, as much as I love him, he sometimes fails to ennunciate) there is a great fan site called the "unofficial Steve Earle" site, with all of his lyrics up until the last 2 albums. OR buy the albums - he always includes lyric sheets with the CD.
Such a great song. It's a shame the song's message is a tool of the Liberal Agenda to discredit the second amendment. Steve Earle is an idiot. I can't insult the great Johnny Cash though. Great song.
Steve Earle wasn't always anti-gun but this song was clearly a comment on the negative powers of gun-totin'..Johnny probably liked it cause of it's similarity in message to his (I think)"Don't take your guns to Town"
I went to a Steve Earle gig here in the UK in the mid 90's, he introduced the song saying " This isn't a gun control song, it's about a juvenile delinquent in the 1800's " Something like that anyway.
So he wasn't an anti-gun retard back then, although he is now.
By time traveling?? Earle's version came out in the 1980s, Cash's in the 2000's. If you are really a Cash fan and have the CD, check the liner notes before posting. The copyright is clearly Earle's.
What makes this a nazi song? There is a British neo-nazi group that covered it, and I have seen their fans claiming they wrote it, but I am sure that did not make writer Steve Earle happy. (He is a socialist.) The content certainly has nothing to do with nazis. It is best known here in the states for Waylon Jennings' version, though I like steve's better.

If momma would have told him why they called it a "Peacemaker" it wouldn't have ended so badly for him.

@TriiXaReFoRkiDZz

The copyright is clearly Earle's.

cant believe why johnny cash sang those fucking nazi songs
assi81912 1 year ago
@assi81912
