hi great vids, I'm having this problem:when I press the on button on the front, it starts to make the turning on sound and then it just beeps like its been turned off and the light goes from green to red, and the red light just flashes
would i be able to fix it the same way you have, is it just overheating? thanks
Thank you for this video. Because of your guide i could repair my similar constructed 40 gb PS3 and save all my savegames and trophies. I really did not believe that it works:-)
I did this once and it didn't work. Then i did it again and the ps3 came on and showed up on the tv but then it froze up and flashed the yellow light then shut off. Now when i try to turn it on it's back to the yellow light of death. What should i do. Please HELP
Thanks for putting these videos up. I had the YLOD and it took two tries but the second one worked. The first try I didn't time the heat gun application. I re-watched your vids and timed how long you heated up the board ics and followed that and now my old PS3 works! Yay!
I just "repaired" my fat 60gb and went step by step and it doesn't work. I have a slim now but can I get my trophies, downloads, etc, etc. from the playstation network/store onto it?
Mine is an old 40gb model so the internals were a bit different but whacking each of the highlighted components with a heat gun for 15 seconds has sorted it.
i have done this whole process before many time and i had it working for a bout a month and left it at my house for 3 days unplayed. and when i got back it broke again after about an hour and a half of playing. i have done this procedure many times since then. i have used the heat gun on 750-1000 degrees heat one the heat gun part. i am at a complete loss. help would be grately appriciated. thanks
What exactly type of compound should I get?....reading the comments and I'm inspired to give it a shot...I got the YLOD a fee weeks ago...exact same model
Gilksy, I've just delved into the depths of PS3 DIY thanks to your PDF and video guide on YLOD. I am massively grateful of your efforts. Totally successful, no doubt due to the clarity and thoroughness of your instructions. It's great to be able to say the best PS3 YLOD repair video available is made by a Brit, a Yorkshireman no less. Thanks!
Gilksy thank you so much!!! Followed your guide (thanks for rebuilding the console too btw) and it worked like a charm..!!! for the ones about to do this, make sure you DO NOT STAY too long with the heat gun, i ALMOST burned one chip because i've read here and there to stay longer but DON'T. 30 circles above each "part" and you'll be fine. I had a little 80010201 error afterwards but that's because i didn't clip the Bluetooth nap properly. Transfered all the data on a new Slim and now i'm BACK!!
Yo guys I just found something out that might contribute to the YLOD. If you have remote start on, the fan keeps running. So if you have remote play on all year your PS3 might be eating at the thermal paste. So pretty much if you have that feature on, you're not completely turning your PS3 off.
6 months ago I started following your guide and only got as far as taking everything apart since I did not have thermal paste. Bring in the new year and I finally got to putting it all back and very happy to report i am updating to system update 4.0 right now...THANKS dude!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. as is the custom I am left with one screw...hope i don't need it :)
The question about a hair dryer, no I don't suggest wasting your time. The heat gun on the video is at 350° celcius. Which is right about 660° Fahrenheit, and I'd say get an adjustable heat gun as the best investment if you choose to constantly reflow the board. Just a little heads up everyone, GRAINGER sells the no clean flux pen... BUT, YOU NEED AN ACCOUNT TO ORDER IT SUNCE ITS A HAZARDOUS MATERIAL. Trust me I tried
That happened to my 20gig, do the fix if you feel up to the task. I eventually bought a slim after fixing the old one about 5x, even tho I would get the YLOD, fix it and back online in 45min. Just got tired of fixing it every couple weeks
@maxxownzyo i stil can play for hours after that incident (i hope), i just wanna know if its time for fresh thermal paste or do i need a complete reflow?
I had to buy a heat gun - best purchase of the new year. Thank you SO much. I'm moving all my data to a new PS3 as I type this and when it's done, I'll only use the old one (first edition) for PS2 and PS1 games. Well, maybe not, but I won't be counting on it to hold all my data anymore!
I followed the video, but haven't done the reflow. My ps/3 rlod . When I turn it on the light is green goes to red immediately. The fan turns on for just a second too. I took the power supply out of an working ps3 and put that in it but that didn't fix it either Any suggestions?
7. Don´t be afraid you will mess things up. It´s not a human heart u´re working on:) and Gilksy1 (who put up the vids), really has done an amazing job to break the whole process down, step by step.
5. Just be careful with all the cables, and the boards when moving things around. Damage/lose whatever screw/bolt/plastic cover u want, but the cables and boards are kinda important to keep electricity and technology flowing:)
6. How long will it last?... Well, that can be up alot of different things. Maybe u should think about how much u´re actually playing, or using ur ps3:) But done properly, it will work for a while at least. If "only" 2 months, do it again.. Cheaper than buying a new one.
4. About the "clips" that holds all the cables. Even if they´re not seen (in different color as the rest of the plastic holder), they are there, just where the cable goes in behind the plastic. Just put down a finger nail and flip up, and it will open.
3. Isopropyl alcohol. Is to clean the metal plates. The old paste comes of with a finger, or a cloth, but to remove it thoroughly, use alcohol, the stronger the better. I used normal medical alcohol, 97%, worked like a charm. It´s only to clean of old "dirt", don´t worry, u won´t damage anything..
... Ask the people u know to borrow one. Hell, go to an autorepair shop and ask to borrow and use one at their place. People usually are friendly:)
2: "Thermal past". High quality is benificial, and yes, it cost a bit more, it doesn´t matter which brand it is. Computer stores have them usually. It will be a thin, white layer after u´ve applied it to the metal plate. And it doesn´t have to dry for hours after applying it, since it will be connected with its counterpart when re-assembled.
I just finished this whole tutorial and thought I´d give some resume of it.
Gilksy1 has done a great job of breaking down the whole process, but I thought I´d bring to light some question-marks some people have:
1. "The heat gun", or any kind of equipment for that matter that can provide 350-400 Celsius for a small surface can be used. Hairdryers can´t generate that high heat, and ovens might melt the WHOLE board at once. Instead of trying to find other solutions, and u don´t have the money...
Wanted everyone to know THIS WORKS!! Thank you Gilksy for this guide, you don't know how grateful I am to you! on a side note i was able to heat it on 450 degrees C. HAPPY HOLIDAYS GILKSY!!!
woah. i did this fix, took me good 2 hours to do it...... it worked for a few minutes. all that work for nothing i thought. so i figured, grrrrrr, i'm gonna do it again fast as hell. I flew through the whole process but this time spent about 30-40 seconds with the heat gun on each part. threw it back together and WOAH! you are my HERO!!!!! :) i was at the store few hours ago, with a new PS3 in my arms, but decided to get a heatgun and compound instead.... YOU ROCK! just hope it lasts :)
Very interesting, i'm going to do this this week-end. But i have a question. Your PS3 has the yellow light as soon as you turn it on. Mine last for a few minutes before the yellow light. Does it change something ? Thank you very much !
I recommend doing this together with 12v volt mod on the fan with a pot. This is just temporary fix "unless" you combine the two. The reason being that the solder joints will most likely melt again if you don't cool it more effectively then prior to getting ylod. I'm talking about the fat ps3 as i own one and got 3 ylods before making the 12v fan mod. Been running fine since then and i would think as long as i keep the fan running fast enough to not allow the solder to melt again it'll last.
dude, i got hired at this place i applied for as a computer technician...they tossed me in the electronics department as an electronics tech. i had absolutely no clue how to fix consoles....then i saw ur video....now im getting done 5 xbox's and ps3's a day thanks to you. even fixed my own ps3 thanks to you....cant thank you enough.
@JOSIAHSUMMERS did you do it exactly as shown? i did and i havent had a returning customer SINCE! also though, i used high end thermal paste. arctic silver!!! dont use cheap shit if you want a more long term fix.
Just to say thanks a lot Gilksy for putting all the effort into making these videos and you PDF tutorial. I managed to repair both mine and my friends PS3s with your guide. Thanks :)
cousin idiot... how do i remove the paste? he put too much on it and now it's stuck onto the ps3 motherboard? i got new ps3 but i dont want him to play on my ps3 much since i mostly use it for blu ray movies
@LAKERSRon15Artest it works. believe me it works. follow it EXACTLY. dont skip ANYTHING. right down to the second of heating the chips do not skip anything. i know its hard not too. trust me. but do it. be patient. also u may notice the video doesnt work even though it powers on after you fix it. just hold the power button until u hear the second beep...problem solved =]
@static4real alright thanks!!! ima try 2 get it fixed today that stupid bitch with the glasses who was wearing pink tutorial sucked ass, thanks again hopefully my ps3 will work
@LAKERSRon15Artest lmfao. yea haha unless ur board is just fried it will work. i have only ran across one persons ps3 that i didnt fix. i reflowed and pasted 3 times. finally i called it quits. the board was just bad. u can only do so much. make sure you absolutely do not touch the board until its cooled down. dont use a fan. u will cool it down way too much and when u move it, u will crack the solder joints. u actually hear it cracking lol. so let it cool to room temp before
What a legend you are! I was playing battlefield 3 and pow went off. 60gb version but with 640gb hdd installed. Went out this morning, bought the heat gun from B&Q and thermal paste from PC world, followed you exactly and tah-dah! It works. :) so happy thanks man!
Just so others may benefit: When I finished, the controller wouldn't connect, nor Internet. So I re-opened, and it was one of the cables wasn't clipped in all the way. Works fine now after the initial USB start up.
I have the 80gb PAL PS3 and I got the YLOD just two months ago. I know this is a temporary fix but if I were to get the YLOD again after fixing the PS3 with this method, would I be able to repeat the reflowing thing again and again to be able to fix it. Would there be any limit for a few years of me playing this and fixing it everytime I got the YLOD?
I was playing mw3 when my ps3 suddenly turned off and gained the YLOD disease. Does this work and would I (a year 10 GCSE electronics student) be able to do the repair???
Thanks a lot gilsky! We made it and it works. We only had a gun on 300°C but id did the trick. We were a little drunk putting it back together so your video helped us out a lot. Thanks from belgium!

I've used this vid to fix mine but now my tv won't pick up the signal from the station to it with either a hdmi or an av cable any hits people on how to fix this????
I'm about to try performing this procedure on my PS3 slim. Are there any major differences between the fat and slim models that will pose a problem for me?
@k0nr Actually, I did a bit more reading and apparently the YLOD on the slim and the fat models are totally different things. When you turn yours on, does it start up normally for about a second, then show you a yellow light, then produce a blinking red light that just keeps blinking indefinately? If so, i've read this is an HDD error or possibly a more serious (reflowing fix won't work) problem with the motherboard. However, I'm just a humble Biochem major, so this shit is beyond me.
@wowpat449 Yep, that's what happens. You said this could be an HDD error - wouldn't that be relatively easy to fix (that is, if the cause can be easily determined)? Anyway, thanks for the heads up. Where did you find this information, btw?
I'm a novice at electrics and with your videos alone i fixed my ps3, Eternally grateful to "gilksy", cheers mate. I tried it with a hair dryer, this obviously didnt work and a heat gun was needed. I psyched myself up for a proper go at it with a heat gun and it worked a treat! Mine was an 80gb so used gilksys 80gb strip down vid aswell. 1st time out my controllers weren't synching up but this was as the short ribbon cable not properly connected. if your ps3 is yloding this method is all you need
HOW TO REMOVE DUST BUILD UP: As you have you PS3 apart and the mother board out look to the right of the heat sinks where the case is vented, youll see two raised channels running from the fan moulding to the right hand case vents, this is where Sony have cocked up, The fan cant blow the air thro the heat sinks as the inner moulding is blocking it! Ive marked up where to drill/cut a slot so the cold air from the fan now blows air thro and out the right hand side of the PS3 along with the dust!
@Cooguy1212 So, if I fix my console, and in fear of it screwing up again, can I sell it in the store and maybe buy a new one ? I mean, i wont be held responsible right ?
@SaucisseMerguez You can, but gilksy has a method where you can remove the warranty seal without anyone knowing. That way you can sell it. If the seal is broken, your best bet is to sell it on Ebay(unless you get lucky and the person doesn't see that you've removed the seal).
@Cooguy1212 Thanks for answering ! well the thing is the warrant has expired (or "Garantie" in french i think means same thing) so maybe its ok if i take it off ? IDK ill check out his video :)
@Cooguy1212 hi do dust cause ylod coz my 40gb ps3 was never opened since it 2008 when it bought it on gamestop? i hope this is just the reason for ylod.. thanks
@jespiritu041199 Dust could very well be the reason why the YLOD happened. Pretty much, all the dust traps all of the air so it has no where to go, so the system over heats. You should open it and clean out the dust as there will be A LOT. If you don't have the ylod yet, you should open it using this guide and clean all of the dust out. Hope that helps.
@Cooguy1212 i already experience ylod a lot of times, but when it tried to turn it on several times the system turned on.... do you think taking all the dust out would stop ylod on my ps3? thanks
@jespiritu041199 Shit son, dust is a major cause of over-heating in systems like these, I'm pretty sure there are special dust-removers that you can get.
I followed step by step the instructions of this video, my ps3 is the oldest one 40gb.
just a few details were different but it was 90% the same as this one here. I used a hair dryer on full blast for 2-3 minutes instead of 15 seconds with the heat gun. It works, thank you!!!!!!!!
What causes the ylod? is there any fault codes, any analyzing? over heating power supply? what voltage will the system need, any chance of just plugging a ac adapter straight to the system, over looping the big box? great vid thx
I recently did this whole procedure and it worked! BUT I NEED HELP! I try to hook my PS3 to my tv, I turn it on and its a black screen. AND also my controllers won't hook to the usb or connect at all.
The best way to make the PS3 last for a long time is to do a reball. Regardless if you reflow so many times the solder joints will become so brittle that reflow won't work and a reball will be a must. Using a cheap 20 dollar heat gun from Walmart is not good on the PS3 because uneven heating to cause board warping and heating too fast which can crack the BGA.
@burnout623 Well my 2nd YLOD fix lasted all of 3 days! Did Flux and reflow too, its totally fucked! All is good though, ordered a new 160GB Slim PS3 for Xmas with Battlefield 3, was worth the try tho, thanks again for the vids Gilksy!
Oh my god this worked. I got a ps3 for $10 from a garage sale thinking it needed a new hd. That wasent it, it had the ylod. The guy I bought it off said that but that was bull. But I used this and it fixed it. 10 bucks and a bit of work for a working ps3 now that is a good deal. Thankyou so much gilksy. Now I don't have to buy a new one and I can be proud of this one as it worked the first time. And again thankyou thankyou thankyou so much gilksy.
Awesome!! Thought I was screwed.....fixed it myself. What is the theory behind this? What does the heat gun do? Does it melt the solder and connect it again?

I'm about to try performing this procedure on my PS3 slim. Are there any major differences between the fat and slim models that will pose a problem for me?
wowpat449 2 months ago
@wowpat449 Same here, my PS3 Slim has the YLOD and I might try this out if this method applies well to Slims.
Have you tried it yet? Let us know how it goes.
k0nr 2 months ago
@k0nr Actually, I did a bit more reading and apparently the YLOD on the slim and the fat models are totally different things. When you turn yours on, does it start up normally for about a second, then show you a yellow light, then produce a blinking red light that just keeps blinking indefinately? If so, i've read this is an HDD error or possibly a more serious (reflowing fix won't work) problem with the motherboard. However, I'm just a humble Biochem major, so this shit is beyond me.
wowpat449 2 months ago
@wowpat449 Yep, that's what happens. You said this could be an HDD error - wouldn't that be relatively easy to fix (that is, if the cause can be easily determined)? Anyway, thanks for the heads up. Where did you find this information, btw?
k0nr 2 months ago
@k0nr I'm still not sure what the exact problem is and i'm unwilling to pay sony money to fix the system. I barely use it these days anyway.
wowpat449 2 months ago
I'm a novice at electrics and with your videos alone i fixed my ps3, Eternally grateful to "gilksy", cheers mate. I tried it with a hair dryer, this obviously didnt work and a heat gun was needed. I psyched myself up for a proper go at it with a heat gun and it worked a treat! Mine was an 80gb so used gilksys 80gb strip down vid aswell. 1st time out my controllers weren't synching up but this was as the short ribbon cable not properly connected. if your ps3 is yloding this method is all you need

johnkmac 2 months ago
HOW TO REMOVE DUST BUILD UP: As you have you PS3 apart and the mother board out look to the right of the heat sinks where the case is vented, youll see two raised channels running from the fan moulding to the right hand case vents, this is where Sony have cocked up, The fan cant blow the air thro the heat sinks as the inner moulding is blocking it! Ive marked up where to drill/cut a slot so the cold air from the fan now blows air thro and out the right hand side of the PS3 along with the dust!

@SaucisseMerguez It's random to be honest. It can be like 1 week, 3 months, or more than a year.
Cooguy1212 2 months ago
@Cooguy1212 So, if I fix my console, and in fear of it screwing up again, can I sell it in the store and maybe buy a new one ? I mean, i wont be held responsible right ?
SaucisseMerguez 2 months ago
@SaucisseMerguez You can, but gilksy has a method where you can remove the warranty seal without anyone knowing. That way you can sell it. If the seal is broken, your best bet is to sell it on Ebay(unless you get lucky and the person doesn't see that you've removed the seal).
Cooguy1212 2 months ago
@Cooguy1212 Thanks for answering ! well the thing is the warrant has expired (or "Garantie" in french i think means same thing) so maybe its ok if i take it off ? IDK ill check out his video :)

@Cooguy1212 hi do dust cause ylod coz my 40gb ps3 was never opened since it 2008 when it bought it on gamestop? i hope this is just the reason for ylod.. thanks
jespiritu041199 2 months ago
@jespiritu041199 Dust could very well be the reason why the YLOD happened. Pretty much, all the dust traps all of the air so it has no where to go, so the system over heats. You should open it and clean out the dust as there will be A LOT. If you don't have the ylod yet, you should open it using this guide and clean all of the dust out. Hope that helps.
Cooguy1212 2 months ago
@Cooguy1212 i already experience ylod a lot of times, but when it tried to turn it on several times the system turned on.... do you think taking all the dust out would stop ylod on my ps3? thanks
jespiritu041199 2 months ago
@jespiritu041199 It could be possible.
Cooguy1212 2 months ago
@jespiritu041199 Shit son, dust is a major cause of over-heating in systems like these, I'm pretty sure there are special dust-removers that you can get.
