There is bias in all of us, its called a human condition, and the more we are aware of our natural biases the more we can design experiments to protect our experiments from bias. Watch Bill Nye's 100 greatest discoveries, if you want a good overview on why science says what it does, many schools just tell you what to believe instead of showing you why you should and the methods used.

Even though observing people may yield your findings, consider what the findings would be if you obsevered them in private and especially in times of emotional distress concerning a loved one. i.e. a parent/child dying in the hospital or the talk in the mirror of how best to teach one's child.

Someone can stand in defiance of something, but get ignored. Someone can try and blaze a path by using different language, but get looked at funny, someone can say "this is how the world should be" and get told to "shut the F*ck up" by people in the real world.

There are periods that I have to go through humbling because I let myself get to disconnected from reality, but it is a difference between a judgmental self-analysis vs a non-judgmental analysis. Psychopaths are so disconnected from the reality that they don't need to care anymore.

Still, you do not tell any solution. The problem is that if you feel bad when you do evil things you must always fell bad because everything you do is evil in some way. You can only ignore that, same like creationists ignore evidence evolution or contradictions in bible.

Psychopaths are not disconnected from reality at all, they just lack some normal human functions but lack of these functions frees them from dissonance.

Otherwise it is just part of the human condition and maybe we all need to seek counseling to deal with our problems.

@deltaxcd The issue is that there is no black and white. If there was an easy solution to this one problem we would probably have all of humanities problems fixed and the world would be perfect. The problem is is that much of our life is like trying to figure out how to drive a care with no instruction manual, while you are driving at top speed. and with only being able to observe other cars and drivers from your window to see how they do things.

@deltaxcd Many times you just have to fake it because people are so appearance based in their judgments that if you appear to not know what you are talking about they are more likely to go with someone worse than you but who can bullshit and manipulate people better. I've lost many women and jobs this way over the years thanks to my asperger's. The fact that you are able to understand and accept that is actually a step forward in self-awareness. Denial can be a useful temporary tool.

@sandform Actually in Sicily the concept of Mafia was created as a form of self defence for the local communities who were in the past constantly harassed by the mainland Italians. The fact that something as functional as that can turn in to terrorism is because certain things that are good in the past, or in a certain community, in small areas, can become horribly destructive when empowered at a larger scale or in the future. Religion/nationalism being the prime example.

I guess practicing self-criticism is not an innate characteristic as soon as you can hide behind a certain group of power. The cohesion factor guarantees that although most of us are far below the average when it comes to achievements, creativity, etc. the more prominent results of the group(certain individuals) reflects positively on the personal identity. There are several examples I can think of, like football for example.

Without this factor, we wouldn’t have most of the things we have today. One good example is heterosexual male chauvinism. Most males are hardly “James Bond”, but most of them do construct a self-image based on similar perceived masculinity, thus gaining the empowerment to ask out and date women far above their borders.

Maximize the chance of you getting what you want with minimal opportunity cost. That's my philosophy.
