My sister's high school symphonic band played this tonight at their concert. It's amazing how different it can sound, and yet still the same. She played the bells, which are what you hear most often in this song, when it plays the 'steps' that the Sugar Plum Fairy danced. It sounded great, and I couldn't help coming to listen to Tchaikovsky again afterwards.

The rest of the ballet is a dream sequence in which the dolls, toys (including the Nutcracker himself), candies and other holiday motifs come to life. Tchaikovsky based the libretto on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann.

@chronDiggity I think Sugar Plums and Glace Plums are the same. It's just like a plum, but all the water inside is replaced with sugar, over a period of weeks. The plums are soaked in sugar syrup, and then they come out. It's like... well Glace cherries. You can get Glace melons, pineapple, peels, etc. It's very nice. A bit Tutti-Fruity
