My sister's high school symphonic band played this tonight at their concert. It's amazing how different it can sound, and yet still the same. She played the bells, which are what you hear most often in this song, when it plays the 'steps' that the Sugar Plum Fairy danced. It sounded great, and I couldn't help coming to listen to Tchaikovsky again afterwards.
@Nocaro The story of "The Nutcracker" is set at Christmas. Act I Scene 1 is entirely the family around the Christmas tree. The rest of the ballet is a dream sequence in which the dolls, toys (including the Nutcracker himself), candies and other holiday motifs come to life. Tchaikovsky based the libretto on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann.
@chronDiggity mostly because the story in the Nutcracker ballet is happening during Christmas I guess. You can read the tale by E.T.A Hoffman or the adaptation by Alexandre Dumas.
I've never actually had sugar plums. Are they good or are they just kind of good, but you can tell back then would have been unGodly good because everything else tasted like shit?
@chronDiggity I think Sugar Plums and Glace Plums are the same. It's just like a plum, but all the water inside is replaced with sugar, over a period of weeks. The plums are soaked in sugar syrup, and then they come out. It's like... well Glace cherries. You can get Glace melons, pineapple, peels, etc. It's very nice. A bit Tutti-Fruity
@chronDiggity For many of us born back many decades ago. When we were children we had 3 television channels and at the Christmas time we watched Disney.
@chronDiggity Another reason it has been ascociated with Christmas may be because of the name "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy" and the line from the classic story Twas the Night Before Christmas which reads "The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugarplums danced in their heads". Just a thought ^_^

Meh, can't find a good version of this song in Youtube. Either it is too fast or too slow tempo or the quality is bad or there are people goughing on the backround ;_;
You know whats funny? I remember reading somewhere that Tchaikovsky hated having to compose ballet scores including the Nutcracker, didn't consider it artistically worthy of his time and only did for the money. Oh well...one man's trash, right?
I didn't originally like this song. Then came Tetris. Suddenly, this song seems magical and I get all emotional when I hear it. WTH. Oh to play tetris with THIS version...now THAT would be wonderful...
@totaldramaqueen99 I guess this song is a little scary without even watching Black Christmas. I watched the movie, but I guess I would be scared anyway.
I like this song, but at the same time it kinda creeps me out... especially since I was little, when Black Christmas came out and this song was in it...
This song gave me nightmares for years, why you may ask well I'll tell you. One Christmas eve the power in our house had gone out. I was about 9 at the time, and it was about three in the morning. Needless to say this very song started playing, and upon further inspection I noticed that...well...it was coming from the depths of our basement. Well I opened the basement door, and all I could see was a black abyss...yeah...I slammed the door ran up stairs and hid under the blanket.

@LSA2013 no... soprano... or maybe alto.... lol I know it's bad that I don't know..... But I'm not exactly familiar with all the different types of instruments.... :/ buuut on another note I do know that we only have one bass clarient! And it is played by my friend Kelsie! :)

Why do I hear this at Christmas all the time?

@chronDiggity The music Tchaikovsky composed for "The Nutcracker" from which this comes has a "holiday feel" to it so I would imagine that is why.
