  • FUCK YOU THAT SHIT IS GR8! :D

  • @jokratos1: Yup. I've had that phone for over 2 years now and I still love it. i even just made my own version of Debian I can use on it.

  • Amazing video, m8. That really blows my mind! I just got an used n900 and I'll definately give it a shot.

  • CAn you make calls ?

  • @alexanderssson: In what way? Of course I can make calls with the default dialler, or do you mean with in the Debian chroot? If you mean in the chroot, I haven't tried. Although Debian does have Cell Phone dialling Programming in it's repositories, I really don't see why you would do that when there is a perfectly good Dialler already on the phone. Is there something you don't like about the default dialler?

  • @metalx1000

Well, I was just asking. I'm really into Android SDK but it is good to know other alternatives too. But yes, my question was regarding if the O.S gives you an option to make calls [chroot]

I assume N900 O.S is Symbian which by the way is a good O.S unlike Windows.

  • @alexanderssson: The N900 runs Maemo which is a Debian based Linux Distro. I have not used Symbian, but I've heard good things.

  • Can you install on any current phones?

  • @jacksparr0w300: I would say the N900 is a current phone, but other then that I believe there are some Android phones you can install it on. It's just a little more complicated because you have to root the phone and do a few more steps to get it working. And since android phones don't run Xorg, if you want to run a GUI app, you need to VNC back into itself. In reality, Debian can run on any ARM device, it's just a matter of how many restrictions the phone manufacturer put on the phone.

  • So can you Install DR17 on it?

  • @Shagron1349: If it's in the Debian repose, yes. I have not done it myself. I'm not familiar with DR17. I would suggest just starting up the programs you need to use when you need them.

  • @metalx1000 Thanks your the Reply,Enlightenment DR17 is a Desktop Environment aimed at Phones and Desktop PC's. As i do not own this Phone yet and still trying to find one that suits my needs.. well that's why i been asking. if your curious check packagesdotenlightenmentdotorg . no idea if that works for the architecture maybe ReasyE17 can compile it from source for it. PS: I SUBSCRIBED! :D

  • there is a problem with my n900 while taking pictures and recording videos ! i have to restart the phone every time to click an image .. once i capture it , it stays fixed to that image and does not go back to the camera mode ! also there is no sign of the captured image in any of the folders !! as for the video , the recording does not even start in video mode,, just as i click on rec button .. it getrs stuck , hangs ! please help as i really need to sort this out !!

  • @hitmankvt: Did this just start or have you had this problem since you got the phone? If it just started, think back to any changes you made around the time of when it started.

I have personally have not had this problem so I don't think I'll be much help. Your best bet would be to ask for help in the N900/Maemo forums. That way you'll have a lot of people to help you and not just me. And maybe some one there has had the same problems as you and may know how to fix it.

  • @metalx1000 thnk you, much appreciated .. i am actually now going to flash my device ! hopefully that will do it !

  • @hitmankvt: Unless it's a hardware problem (which I don't think it is), Flashing Should work. Good luck.

  • sexxxxiiiiii

  • OMG, I love my Nokia N900. Ultimate geek phone.

  • @flasher555: Until MeeGo phones start showing up, nothing even comes close to the power of the N900.

  • @metalx1000

Indeed. Looking forward to MeeGo phones.

I had a choice between iPhone and Nokia N900, am I glad I've choosen N900. Almost a year later and I still playing with it and discovering the new things.

  • @metalx1000 And now my only hope for MeeGo was the Nokia N9, and now Nokia has said that it will come with WP7, so I got a N900, best phone ever.

I've also heard that Nokia is working on official full compatibility between N900 and MeeGo

  • @skate2spellgirl: That would be nice. Good news is MeeGo is not dead. Bad news is, we need some one to make some hardware for us to put it on :)

  • @metalx1000 Actually, I find it perfect if they make it for the N900, because I think the hardware is good enough. The only bad thing about the phone is that the battery dies too soon.

  • @skate2spellgirl: Lasts a full day for me unless I'm using ettercap a lot. But, I did have a problem with the battery when I installed a different kernel. The phone would only last a few ours then. Have you made any changes to the kernel? How long on average does the battery last for you?

  • @metalx1000 If I doesn't touch it, it can last for 2 or 2 and a half days. I installed the enhanced version of kernel, but i also installed some programms that require it. If I use it a lot, using aircrack with wireless card in monitor mode or if i play games, it only lasts for a few hours.

  • @skate2spellgirl: Yeah, the enhanced kernel was killing my battery life. Once I went back to the default kernel my battery life tripled.

  • @metalx1000 And what exactly is wrong with it? I think I installed it because aircrack required some modules that that kernel had installed but I don't know really good what it does.

  • @skate2spellgirl: A change in Kernel settings can have a huge impact on how a system runs and how it handles power management. I installed the Advanced Kernel to turn my phone into a wifi hotspot. I never really used that feature, I just wanted to see if I could. I know that aircrack works with out the advanced kernel, but it can't do packet injections. Did you installed the Advanced Kernel to get that feature? It may just be all the extra features the kernel gives that causes the power drain.

  • @skate2spellgirl: Ofcourse, I don't really know what features the Advanced Kernel gives other then the Wifi HotSpot and maybe something with aircrack.

  • @metalx1000 Ok, I found out that it allows aircrack to scan in more than one channel at a time and differents channels than 6, here in Spain 6 is the most used so I'm uninstalling it right now.

Thank you very much for your help.

  • @skate2spellgirl also i have installed apps to lower the screen backlight, and i use wifi connection so i have it in 2G mode instead of 3G, also I have the wifi at 10mW instead of the default 100mW of power.

  • Lol, You too play SuperTux? I love that game!!

  • LXDE = Light Weight X11 Desktop Environment. I don't think its't pratical to install a full blown linux Distribution on your phone, despite the benifitrs of having packetsniffing applications on your phone!

  • @crypticdonkey: you don't have to run the whole DE. I thought I said that in the video. I never load up LXDE. I normally run everything from the command line. It's installed in a chroot and run from an image. so, it uses pretty much only the resources it takes to run the program you are loading. So, the LXDE is not piratical. But, having a full blow Linux Distro on your phone is 100% practical and uses no more resources then just running Maemo.

  • I keep getting decompression errors

  • Lolled to your conversation. :D

  • My debian LXDE desktop is not launching when i click debian LXDE....PL HELP

  • @2341Hassan: ok, does the debian terminal work?

  • @metalx1000 debian chroot works and stands at command prompt but when i click on the debain LXDE icon in meamo its window seems openning but does not open and vanishes away as if nothing happend.

  • @2341Hassan: open the meamo terminal, not the debian one, and type "debwm"

That is the script that the icon runs. if it crashes, you should get an error on the screen.

  • metalx1000@ as soon as entered the command i got the following message :-

Starting Debian echo "chroot is now open!"

  • @2341Hassan: Well, it is mounting the image properly. But, it can't set a display. I thought I asked this earlier, but I don't see the comment now, can you start other GUI apps from the Debian command line?

  • @metalx1000 i have not opened any application using x terminal

why dont i tell u how i installed the image

step 1 . downloaded the image

step 2. placed it in mydocs using my pc

step3. then ran the programme using the “ Debian image installer ” the system rebooted then i checked the open office icon once double clicked it and it was working

but aftet that when i clicked debian lxde its misbehaving ...! Dear help in detail coz i am new to n900

  • @2341Hassan: Humm, When you say you "downloaded the image", did you you the installer to download it, or did you go and get it from a website?

I don't know why Open Office would work but not LXDE.

    Does Open Office still work?

Can you get other GUI apps to run?

  • @metalx1000 Dear my openoffice works fine ....I think I have installed it thrice...

can you tell me how to change the default image and delete the rest.

  • @2341Hassan: If the image is unmounted, then you can just delete the file. To install a new image there is an Icon that says "Deb Img Install" that will guide you through it.

If OpenOffice is working, then your IMG file is working. Just must be an issue with LXDE in that IMG. Getting a new image file will hopefully fix that.

  • @2341Hassan: Just as a note, although it's cool to run LXDE on your phone, it's not really practical. You'll have to use the stylus for most things and it will use up unnecessary resources. Running just the program you need is simpler faster and uses less system resources.

But, you may have your reasons for wanting to run LXDE, so good luck.

  • this is awesome!

    thanks for making this video...

  • i cannot install Debian in my n900.

  • @menu2k: Ok?

  • has it ever happened that your debian crashed and deleted all the files from your nokia n900 because you kept them on your mass memory ???

  • @soham500: No, even if Debian did crash, it should have no effect on your file system.

  • @metalx1000 hmm well i thought so... but i am not sure.... yesterday i woke up at morning and found my mass memory to be completely empty and the phone returned to factory defaults... :P hehe moreover the funny thing is... all my applications that i installed were found on the UNINSTALL option of the application manafer ...ready to be uninstalled but nowhere to be found on the system...lol....i had to re-equip my mass memory.... :)

  • @soham500: Well, hopefully you didn't lose anything important. The Debian install is running from an image file that you are chrooted into. Debian crashing would not effect your maemo system at all. But, if you where to go to your home dir or you SD card and run something like "rm -fr *" while in the Debian environment it will erase those files. This Debian install doesn't effect your boot loader or really any of your Maemo system other then installing a small script file to execute chroot.

  • @metalx1000 yes :) i know that.... but you know my phone is kinda new... so anything weird will make me go bonkers...:P thats why i asked.... but by the way ... thank you for your help ... very much appreciated... :)

but can you please tell me one more thing ?? what command shall i use to get access into my memory card on the Xterminal??? !!! :S

  • @soham500: The card should be mounted under /media Off the top of my head, I think that the full path is /media/mmc1. so you would use cd to change directory

    cd /media/mmc1

then you can video the files with ls

  • @metalx1000 hey thanks ... it worked... :P i appologize for asking such a nooby question.. hehe... kinda new to linux !! :D

  • @soham500: No problem, I'm hear to help. Learning knew stuff is a pain some times, but when it comes to Linux and Open-Source, it's worth it. Things will be easier in the long run.

  • @soham500 its not working for me can u help

    it says EZ-CHROOT ERROR

  • Comment removed

  • Very nice dude, I want to try and install on my phone but a little scared!

  • @talboko: Nothing to be scared about. It doesn't change your system at all. It downloads debian in an image file and then has a script to start Debian in a chroot. If you don't know what a chroot is, give it a Google, but basically is changes the root directory for that session to the image file.

  • hey great video !! :) is there a way to download the debian package directly on PC and then trasnfer it to n900 for processing ? i dont have a good internet package for my mobile and its limited so plzz any help would be greatly appreciated :) thank you !

  • @soham500: Yes, there is. But I don't know the link off the top of my head. You should be able to find it with some Googling. I'll try to do a video on, But I'm so far behind on my videos, I can't promise it will happen soon.

  • @metalx1000 thanx anyway... i got it already.... but i cannot post the links here .... its giving me an error... how can i ?? :)

  • @soham500: Yeah, Youtube doesn't allow posting of links in comments. You can post it at our forum. There is a link on my site in the description.

  • @RetroShinigami : Agreed :)

  • hi.where can I get that gnome alsa mix app??? thx

  • @DjLocoPl: Haven't tried this in the chroot, but the package should be "gnome-alsamixer"

  • WoW this phone is the shit if you can run DEBIAN and all those network tools like NMAP then you can have alot of fun with this phone ;) im getting this.

  • I have a wireless internet (Wimax). It runs through a usb modem. Is there any way I can use that to run internet on my nokia n900? The device is like one shown in the following video: watch?v=PszpXHJ-Rms

  • when i start lxde desktop and can create new folders on the desktop.

that has apparently something to do with permissions (root?)

    any advise?

  • @natsplit: I'll look into it. I never use the LXDE. I just start the Debian apps from the Debian command line to save on system resources.

  • @metalx1000 I was looking into mobiles that runs Linux-OS like, and If saw this N900 but the specs of the phone was not too good compared to like android mobiles. Any suggestion ?

  • @AiDz0r: For me, the software is more important. If it cant run the programs I need then it doesn't matter how fast it is. Plus it was fast when it came out. Buy any phone now and in a year it would be up to what is coming out.

That being said. We should start seeing phones with MeeGo (MeeGo is replacing Maemo) soon. The N900 is the 4th in what is suppose to be a 5 part series. So, at some point there will be a newer similar phone from Nokia. So, if you can wait, then wait.

  • @metalx1000 Yep thanks for the information. I would be waiting then. ^.^

  • @metalx1000 Oke thanks for replying back, I did a little research now. As you said wait for MeeGo because it will be replacing the other OS but as far as I saw you are limited on MeeGo... and I was looking forward to a mobile that can run NeoPwn on a better Smartphone like "Samsung Galaxy S" but it all depends on the drivers :/ I'm kind of really lost with mobile devices now. I just need a new mobile that I can use daily also do a dual boot or w/e that can run "Neo Pwn"

  • @metalx1000 Also I've seen few articles about it too, I've heard that in 2011 there will be a new MeeGo OS that will support HTML5 (and i think the Flash 10.1) along with AMR Processor which I HOPE will support a strong Linux OS that you can access to ROOT. (I've heard that due to hacking issues MeeGo will try to prevent from network hacking. I'm just kind of lost dont know what to do.. I really dont want to carry two mobiles ..

  • @AiDz0r: I don't know, I was hoping that MeeGo was going to be as open as Maemo. As long as I can have Root Access and use Debian on it, It shoulds do all I need. We'll just have to see. I know, waiting is a pain.

  • great video could u possibly post another one showing how u can run java either on the meamo os or the easy debian thx

  • great video could u possibly post another one showing how u can run java wither on the meamo os or the easy debian thx

  • Need ur help,,just bought my N900,,,when i go to my facebook i always have problem playing the video clip,it shows a massage ''pls update your flash player'' my phone is a maemo 5,how do i get to install the latest flash player so that i can play video clip on my facebook,,,pls advice,..also that what are deb files, how do i use it...help,

  • @88PROMAX: I'll have to look into the flash player thing. If you keep your software up to date with the app manager you should have the newest version of flash.

  • @metalx1000 THANKS,,I'M quite sure mine N900 is up to date, cause i have check mine,i went to the App manager and try update it and its say that NO UPDATE AVAILABLE,,,. is this means mine is already up to date,,,,but the flash player on facebook still doesn't work.is this just me or every one own a N900 have this problem too,,,well do you have any idea that might help me fix this,,,pls advice,,.

  • @88PROMAX: A deb file is a Debian install file. It's a package used to install software. You really should need to do anything with the deb files, your package manager should download and install the deb files for a program you are trying to install. But, if there is something you need to install with a deb file, make sure you get the correct one for your phone. It you download one, the package manager should try and install it.

  • @88PROMAX : What OS do you use on your computer? If you are using Windows, it time to make the switch. Linux is very easy to use, but it is different then windows and takes time to learn. It's easy to learn on you desktop then on a phone. Once you know it, the phone is the same. It's not a watered down OS like Windows mobile, iPhone OS, or even Android. It gives you full power and full freedom, which also means you have a better chance of screwing stuff up :)

But, you can always flash it.

  • @88PROMAX to fix the facebook problem install the 'tweak flash version' from the app manager, and than open it and choose the version 10.xx and than you will be able to play facebook videos, and for the deb, well its like the installation software for an app .

  • @playmaker747 hey,,,thanks a lot just download tweak flash it works now,,,,one more thing is the N900 have a dictionary built in,,i just can't find it,,where can i find it,,,or i need to download,,do you have any idea,,.....great job and thanks again,,,,

  • That's fantastic. I've wanted this phone for a while now and have finally allocated the funds to get one. Looks better than I expected, I figured I would mostly be running CLI but GUI looks indeed very usable on this machine. Hell, I'd sell two of my boxes for one of these now. I suspect the Unity environment in Ubuntu Netbook Remix would be more functional. Thanks for the video metalx1000

  • @88PROMAX .deb files are package files (think the .exe files that were used in windoze to install programs) They're generally used by double clicking it on your desktop. It's a more round about way to install software that's not available in your repository. I say it's more work because instead of entering a command or filling a check box and letting the computer do all the work, you have to go download it from a web site, then run it, and then delete it when you're done.

  • heh thats great and all buddy but does the wireless chipset of the nokia network interface support packet injection ? if not its just a packet sniffer and is useless when it comes to "penetration testing" wifi networks ;)

  • @amino0oL No, no packet injections, but pack sniffing is with ettercap is still great. Also Air-crack can do other things like de-authenticate someone from a network. Plus, you know, the thousands of other programs that are already available for Debian.

  • @metalx1000 i believe de-auth attacks require packet injection sir , and i ACTUALLY just found out that with the software called NeoPwn they modded the software to inject packets with the n900s wireless chipset so i guess it can be done!! wow the fun i'd have. neopwn installs directly on the n900's OS and not in the sandboxed virtual DEB OS tho.

  • my my you're CUTE!!!!

  • :"( :"( i want my debian

  • i had downlaod it but when i open the program it will said to me error

  • @likekid545: What did the error say? Is that where you had a download error? or was it a different error? I'll try and see if I can download a new image tomorrow.

  • @likekid545: I just removed my img file and I'm now downloading a clean one. Download is going to take a little while, but it seems to be going good so far.

  • @likekid545: The image downloaded and everything is working fine. Can you give me more info on the error you are getting?

  • :"( i cant downlaod it it said 2 me error what can i do guys plz tell me :(

  • @likekid545: Downloading the program or the image file?

  • @likekid545 install new maemo 5 update and try.

  • Thank you!

    1% downloaded right now.

1 Question, is it the same Unix commands in Debian as it is in Maemo?

I've read that not every linux runs with apt-get / apt-cache etc etc

    Ty anyway.

  • @daiiani: Maemo does use apt-get, but it's repositories aren't as full as Debian's. So, that is why the Easy-Debian Chroot is nice. Once inside the Debian environment you can run pretty much and Debian program that your hardware can handle.

Once thing about the Debian chroot image is that it's small and the img file fills up pretty fast (If I remember right it's about 2GB after it uncompresses). There are tutorial out there that show you how to resize an img file. I made mine about 5GB.

  • can somone tell me plz . if i create a file on the debian inviroment how can i transfer it on the phone?

  • @Vlaxiti: If I understand your question, you can ssh it over to the phone or copy it to it on an SD card or through mass storage mode. when you are in the Debian environment you can still access the other folders on the phone. It just see the image file as the / dir.

  • @metalx1000 Scince debian is on a virtual enviroment ,i thought that u cant access ur created files through the phone or if the phone is closed . Thanks very much for ur replay i love u!. One more question (related to hacking) have u tried to capture any data? monitor mode?lets say that i want to capture files from a wep encryptioned network, and then aircrack it in my house

  • @Vlaxiti: It's not a virtual environment. It's a chroot. It basically tells the computer that anything run from that shell should use that img or directory as the root directory. If you have 2 distros of linux on your computer you can chroot into the other partition at any time and run programs from it without rebooting (I should do a video on chroot). It's also how you install some distros like Gentoo.

  • @Vlaxiti: The N900's hardware can't handle packet injections so WEP cracking is hard (It could take a real long time). But, once you are on a Network ettercap, etherape, wireshark, tcpdump, etc... work great. I use them often on my phone.

  • i need that phone so bADLY, GREATE VIDEO I HOPE that this doesnt destroy the phone

  • @Vlaxiti: This project does not/should not touch the boot loader on the phone. It should really make any changes to the system at all. So, the install processes should screw anything up. All it should be doing is running a chroot command that points to an img file.

Once you are in the environment you can still screw files up on the main OS just as you can from the normal terminal. In fact you are less likely to screw it up since you are working in a different / dir.

  • i think i will be sorry for life...actually my phone now is dead. just because of this Debian thing. if only i know that N900 is not that user friendly i will not buy it. anyway, i'm so depressed and dismayed about it. my unit now is in the hands of Nokia technicians that they themselves are experiencing technical difficulties why that problem occured and how they will satisfy me.

next time I will not buy Nokia brand. i'd rather stick to my older one. thanks anyway for the reply. God Bless.

  • @oleole23us: The Easy Debian Chroot works off an image. it should not effect the system itself during installation. I highly doubt that it caused your phone to die. The Nokia N900 works the some as any computer. It will do what no other phone can. But with that freedom you also have to know your own abilities and limits. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with it.

That happens when you try and flash it?

  • @oleole23us I'm really sorry to hear that =S

  • the problem in my case is that the Deb Img Install in my phone does not work..or it does not installs...what should I do. it always prompted me when I finished downloading the 2.3G application...(ERROR)..please teach me. thanks

  • @oleole23us: Sorry, I have not had this problem myself. What does the error tell you? does it go for a while and then stop or does it never really start?

  • Okay, i'd LOVE to try debian on my N900, but i've heard that people hed their phone bricked,,, soo now i am kinda aftraid that i brick my phone once i do this,,

    is this safe to do?

without screwing up my Nokia N900?

I'd love to know if it is.

  • Whats up man. Thanks for the N900 videos i really appreciate it. thanks

I wanted to know if you could lend me some advice........ the tv out on my HD tv is only in back and white. i tried it on my land ladies old & and i worked fine. what could be causing this problem.

I love maemo i bought a N810 last year this same exact month. its becoming a tradition of mine to buying Maemo devices ever year after i get my tax refund.

  • Wish I could help.

I have some trouble getting it to work at all on my TV and haven't played with it to much. From what I've read it seems it is kinda picky on what TVs it wants to work with.

  • Have you tried altering the NTSC/PAL settings?

  • I didn't like it so I uninstall the app but I still seeing Close Debian.. how can I get rid of the Close Devian from my apps..

  • Is it possible to increase the image size?

  • yes,

the first 2 times I installed Debian I filled the image in a few days. The third time I increased the size to about 4GB.

I'll do a video on it soon, but if you need it now just Google "resize img file" and the first link should be a knoppix forum. That is the directions I followed.

  • sweet ,makes me wana hav it for stuff like that !

  • Noticed that both KDE and Gnome are in the package repo, once Debian is installed, but I don't dare trying to install them lol.

  • Yea, Any with the chrooted Debian there is is no need to start up the full desktop environment since you can just run any Debian GUI program from the command line.

But, if you wanted to start up a DE I would stick with something like icewm, fluxbox, or lxde.

  • Oh man, this is epic. Just installed it, now to see if I can get KDevelop (or gcc) and Gimp working :)

  • Everything should work except sound. As of now, there is no sound through the chroot.

  • Hi i installed this but decided i was gonna wait untill i got sdcard so uninstalled it but i cant seem to remove the "clos debian" app. It just blue and doesnt do anything.

can you please tell me how i can remove this? would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  • You are LAZY, I don't blame ya.

All those apps can run in Maemo, but not everybody is willing to cross-compile for the Armel architecture. Still, it is a pretty nifty trick, I wonder if they come out with a full distro-flash, I know that slackware has 12.2 on arm4. I theorize that if you run that distro over maemo, if you had a similar app, all those apps should run faster, since they are compiled for the arch.

  • Yeah, your right, I am.

I just have always hated compiling software.

That's why I stick to scripting languages (BASH, Python).

I know just enought c and c++ to hello world (maybe a little bit more). If all I have to do is ./configure; make; make install I'm good. One problems start I give up pretty fast. I really should work more with compiling stuff. Could get my system to run much faster if I did.

  • This is totally awesome. Have seen many cool N900 videos, but as a Linux geek, this is by far the most interesting ever. Can't wait until my N900 arrives in a week or so, the possibilities seems endless. Thanks for a very informative video.

  • Wau, thats amazing. Can I ask how long holds your battery i N900, when you running LXDE?

  • I don't really run the LXDE to much since I can just start the programs I need with out it.

But the phone has decent battery life. Normal use it will last all day with ease. Heavy wifi usage can drain the battery pretty fast. The first day I had the phone I transfered 2GB of music through wifi using scp. That alone took about 25% of the battery. But, normal day of usage, well, it's 6:27pm right now, I've been using my for a lot to day and I still have about 40% battery left.
