This is awesome, I was entranced by it. Just found out about him I now have three of his albums, sent from Atlanta. This one from 1969 is a very good album. Sit back, relax and think.
@trademark1874 Glad you liked it - it was funny that you and killerinstinct were toss banter around at which was the best version and no one had mention Harvey Mandels version which i just found to be the most intense making me en joy it alot more because of said fact.. anyway hopefully you liked my 2 cent. Enjoy Chris the Redeemer
Just thought I'd clear up the queries below. Donald Byrd's version came out first on his 'A New Perspective' LP, but Duke Pearson wrote it and undertook the arrangements on Byrd's LP. Six years later in 1969 Pearson recorded this version, under his name on his 'How Insensitive' LP, again on the Blue Note label. Both version very deep and stirring, but I have to go with Byrds if I had to choose.
You know the more and more I listen to this, the more and more I like it. I still love Donald Byrd's version, but I would no longer consider it to be better than Duke Pearson's. I'd consider them both to be pretty even. This has a nice raw feel to it, while the Donald Byrd version is more polished. Both are beautiful though. Different, but beautiful all the same.
I think the year was either 1969 or 1970 could be earlier. But i do know that the recording of Cristo Redentor is from the Duke Pearson How Insensitive album (look above) and have been heard in many movies and was actaully played at Martin Luther Kings funeral.
Huh, I didn't know that. That makes me appreciate Duke Pearson even more than I already do. My above comment wasn't intended to be disrespectful. I have a lot of respect for Duke, I just think the Donald Byrd version was much better.
my dad showed me this, love it :-)

I just discovered this pearl, which shocked me, because there was a huge hit in Belgium, which now suddenly appears to be a cover...
It is called 'Magnus - Summer's here' (from the movie 'Anyway the wind blows')

Harvey Mandel's version is my favorite.

I would also mention Charlie Musselwhite's version on his "Stand Back" album - much different, but still another great one.

Why fight over the better version, enjoy the tune and check out versions by The Headhunters, David Sanborn, Fathead Newman, and Tim Warfield.

@MRAm33t Hey check out Harvey Mandels' version sounds even better I think.. more haunting and Irish banshee like. Let me know what you think

Yes this is the original. And had it not been for Duke Pearson,Donald Byrd would have not recorded his version.

Just read your post readyrudy30315. I was trying to find out which was the original.
Had it down to Harvey Mandel or Donald Bird ... seems I may have been wrong on both counts.
Thanks for the info. Do you know which year Duke originally recorded this? Also which album its from? Seems I may have to go check out some CD's.

Then again (after looking at the still image) is the album title "How Insensitive"?

Donald Byrd is the original readyrudy30315, it was recorded in 1963 6 years before this version

No disrespect intended, but the Donald Byrd version of this song is like a million times better.
