This is one of the best it gets better videos I have watched. Brilliant man. Sincere, simple and effective. I hope many people see your vid. Thank you!
Hi!I live in Bosnia and Herzegovina.I'm 33,and I came out to my family and friends when I was 24.It was kinnda hard for my parents (they were 63 and 65 yrs old at that time) but they overcame it.I'm still not openly gay,but it got so much better, brought me and my friends so much closer. It's still very hard to be gay here, but never will I be untrue to myself. For those who still havent't came out-please do!IT GETS SOOOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER.Even in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
First thing you have to feel better about who you are, before you start tell your friends and family that you are gay ...I think kids these day think are very afraid to tell their parents that they are gay .. but there is help out their for them ... never be afraid who are,god will always love you no matter what ...
My family is fine with who I am and I enjoy it to an extent. However, how do people deal with coming out to the world? Throughout my life I feel ups and downs with the power to just admit it to people who probably already know and hiding to avoid the hostility from everyone who doesn't. I just don't know what to do and my self isolation is crushing. My final hope right now is college which is just 6 months away. I hope it gets better because no one deserves this loneliness.
I used to think just like before my "coming out" to my family. It wasn't a coming out exactly, they discovered. The fact is that my sexuality broke my family, and with time we were able to fix it but never were the same. I'm still not free. In college nobody knows about me, and all of my friends are homofobics, so I have to live a lie every day. But you're totally right, it really does get better.
i'm a girl and i'm straight, but i wanted to say how amazing i find what you ppl are doing here! I think it's great that you all support each other! It's amazing how watching your video Matt, i can totally understand how you feel, even i've never went trugh the same thing. It makes me smile seeing you smiling when you talk about how good it makes you feel accepting who you are! I can actually see that you are happy now:)
Wish you all the best and all of you who went or going trugh the same thing!
Wow Matt I think I just fell in love with you. But like most good gay men, I bet your already taken. I remember the coming out of Ellen. I think we are so lucky to be alive today to witness the change cause it is coming! When I was younger I totally thought I was going to find a girl who was good enough too. Looking back that is crazy. I can't believe I was going to accept that kind of life. Life is a crazy, scary, funny, journey. Thanks for sharing a little bit of your life with us. ;)
This video could apply not only to people who are gay and cannot accept it and move on, but also to any kind of human dispair, pain and hardship...cause it speaks about HOPE, what Jesus had been talking about too...Never let go, such a wonderful life! - also, you are very attractive and charming man, xaxa -!!
Hi I just want to tell you that your video has hit home to me. I’m not out and I'm struggling with this. I feel like my world is collapsing. I am currently married and have 2 adult children and I've been living a lie for such a long time. I'm so confused and just don't know how to handle this. I feel that I've let down my marriage and am feeling extremely guilty! I just wanted to share this with someone! Thank you
thanks matt. everything you say rings with integrity, intelligence and compassion. and now to prove myself another shallow gay man: you've won my "cutest guy in the It Gets Better video contest."
As u can see now many States and places are creating new reforms that let men and women the possibility to have more rights or to get marriage... well this is not still allowed in Italy, where I live, but I hope that something will change....
Yeah it's difficult (I understand u) but we don't have to give up but try to continue and go on ;)
I think that Most of people are influenced by the "common view" that State,Church or other "organisation" give to them. We born in a system where they teach us that men and woman are the right type of relationship, that Homosexuality is an illness that need to be cured ... but it's not right! THEY ARE THE PERSON "TO CURE" NOT US! we'll see what happen... maybe in a near future they'll change their point of view (I hope) ...
@farmerz245 I'm sorry to hear that you're going through a tough time with your family. I can't tell you what you should do without knowing you and being in your situation, but even if your family doesn't support you, there are so many people out there -- be them friends, people from a support group, or people in your community -- that will be there for you and help you through the journey. You're strong and amazing just as you are, so remember that :)
@AlexandraLindahl What an amazing statement. And you will see that it's true. Everyone goes through their own ups and downs in life, but at the end, it's an amazing journey that you deserve to stick around and experience. Best of luck with everything :)
Just came out to my parents today. It lasted 1h30 and I felt like it would never end. They are completely fine with it. I feel like I'm in a dream...it's hard to believe that what you've been hiding for such a long time is becoming accepted in a short instant.
I still have a problem though...I'm in an enginerring school and the environment is quite tense...I don't know if I should tell my friends over there. It's 80% males, and I'm not sure if most of them would understand.
@Kupolyth That's amazing news about your family! Congratulations on having the strength and courage to reveal your true self. As for your classmates, you have to do everything on your own schedule. I don't know where you live or what the environment is like, but I'm sure you can find a group of people you trust and start with them to see ho the process goes. Good luck and let me know if you need anything!
@Kupolyth Woh, lol, yeah, I'm in an engineering school too. I've actually told everyone but my engineering friends... I just feel like they are the most sheltered and wouldn't know how to take it. I've actually told one of them, and he was totally cool with it. I guess they're just normal people. Normal people who just so happen to be in engineering. Good luck, bro, and congrats on the parents. Way stoked for you :)
@Ivantheserious ^This. I can't tell you how annoying and frustrating it is when I hear so many idiots on this planet act like STDs/AIDS/HIV is strictly exclusive to homosexual men. It's so idiotic.
I know this video is serious, and the man in the video is serious as well. I just can't deny that I didn't really listen to what he was saying, because he's so hot. I imagined us running away together! We'd tour London in wool coats while sipping hot coffee on the Thames. Oh.............sigh.....I'm so pathetic. Now, I'm imagining us in Spain in late November....touring the countryside in our convertible Jaguar....... I need a man!
@saulofers Never say never. I don't know your situation and would never tell you to do something that could endanger your life, but hold on to the hope that one day it really does get better. Who you are is NOT wrong; God doesn't make mistakes. Always feel free to reach out to me or the thousands of other people who have gone on the record in these videos to spread the word that life is worth living and that things get better.
@mandminla thx for replying to my comment and I want to say I have no proof that gays have a disorder. Nor do I have much knowledge of gays and there actions. (except my cousin is gay but we never talk) The only reason why I'm against gays is my religion says it is wrong.
@TheCaptan200 You are entitled to your religious beliefs and to practice as you wish, but when you start to throw out words like "disorder" and "wrong," that's where your religion starts to hurt others. The implied message in those words is that we're broken, and it's this mindset is what drives so many LGBT people to suicide. Instead of breaking people down, use your religion to support tolerance, love and a better unity among all of God's people.
@mandminla Yeah I feel bad about the suicides that take place because people make fun of them. Thank you for respecting my religion and I will try harder next time to think about my actions and choice of words.
85 likes and 0 dislikes, as it should be. I've watched a few other videos on the project and while a lot of others kinda come across as patronising, or condescending, or really leave nothing within the video to offer help aside from the mentioning of 'it gets better', I have to agree that your video was incredibly sincere and I found myself nodding at a couple of moments. Wonderful and thank you for making it. -Adam
The Dan Savage project led me to your video initially a year ago, and at the time I felt so impassioned and affected emotionally that I created my own contribution to the project. I have been out to everyone in all parts of my life for about two years with a mostly positive response, however, at times I still feel uncomfortable. I am not sure what that is, but the words you've recorded in this six minute video make me feel better. I wish you would make another. -Brandon in Reno
@griffi41 Wow, thank you for that. I still have my moments of shame and discomfort, and I don't know if that will ever go away. But at the end of the day, I wouldn't change anything about myself, and that's the important part. You're doing your part by just being out and being who you are, so thank you to you :)
@bwoodtrumpet2014 The true sign of a strong person: throw out hateful speech while hiding behind your computer screen. You must feel so much better about yourself now that you let that out. In all honesty, your comment made me chuckle a little. Spineless people who taunt via the Internet aren't the real threat. While I posted a video of myself, made myself vulnerable, and exposed myself to the world, you cast judgment through a made up screen name with no way to trace it back to you. So cowardly
@mandminla It's best not to give commenters like this the attention they look for. Just remember: a great way to get rid of a YouTube troll is to starve it of what it wants.
@mandminla Amen! And you are sharing your story in order to lift others up and help them through. Cowards only work to drag others into their own despair so they have company. Thanks for sharing your story!
Hi Matt !! Thank you so much for share your story.... while you were telling it, i felt like you were tell my story, i feel so identify with so many aspects of it ..... thanks to "it gets better" and specially to your video a feel encourage to speak with my arents a finally feel free (now im 23),,,,, my dad really wants me but he cannot stand gay people, i do not who he us going to react, but again i think this is now !! THANKS AGAIN FOR HELPING ME TO BE FREE... SEND YOU A HUG, TAKE CARE
@Boy22100 Gracias por tu comentario! I had a tough time telling my dad because he was a strong Christian, but he chose to accept me over his religious beliefs and is now one of my biggest allies. Al final y al cabo, todo saldrá bien, y te deseo un montón de felicidad. Te lo mereces. Un abrazo!
@proboi522 That's why I did it. I couldn't sit back idly, knowing that my story -- along with the thousands upon thousands of others -- could really make a difference in the lives of kids out there struggling with who they are and whether they want to continue to live. Thanks so much for the feedback :)
I'm sorry I haven't visited your wonderful contribution to this most important project earlier! An effort that I might add, is very dear to my heart! You're so right about the messages that young people get in the home environment, being crucial, weather subtle or overt!
@blainebill39 With the thousands of videos to go through, there's absolutely no need to apologize. Thank you for taking the time to respond to mine, though. It means a lot to me that this video has been seen and struck a chord with people. Take care :)
@mandminia A boy I once loved , long ago (Bobby Griffith/Prayers for Bobby) unfortunately heard only demonizations of queer(LGBT/gay) people, which sadly hammered his sense of self worth, resulting in his taking his own life! I'm so thrilled though to witness today, people like yourself and legions of others stand up and speak out!
@blainebill39 I can't even imagine the pain he must've been in. Hopefully this project reaches those who are in the same situation and causes them to take pause and reconsider their decision. Take care :)
@TheAndrewreloaded They are! Just hang in there and you'll see how much better things get. Life is an exciting (and sometimes rough) journey that's out there for you to discover.
so.. I have no idea who you are, but this is definitely one of the best make it better videos i have ever seen and I definitely really enjoyed this. thank you.
Thanks Mat. what you said had hit home. i from longisland and at that time being gay was unacceptable among my family and friends. im just coming out now at 38 y/o and i realize i made a huge mistake keeping this secrete inside me.
@29kevin29 I'm so glad your'e comfortable now being who you are. It takes courage and sometimes a lot of time to reach that point, but it's truly a great thing to be able to live your life fully and honestly. Thanks for commenting :)
@adoringcarmine I know it's hard to believe and understand these videos as you're living through the bad times, but thousands of people have stepped forward to deliver this message because it really is true. Life will never be perfect, and things aren't always going to be looking up, but overall, things get better. And in the end, you'll see that the memories you'll make and the good times you'll have will be so worth sticking around for. Stick in there :)
@TheMojore Thank you so much for that comment. That's really the reason I made this video. There are so many people out there who went through the same struggle, and no one should feel like they're in it alone. Hang in there :)
Thanks for making a vid Matt! So much of homophobia is sent through passively -- in the media, in online forums, on facebook , so in a way it's even worse than being called out directly. It also sucked that you couldn't watch certain shows with gay elements to it, but i do think it's so much harder to avoid now (with glee and modern family and such) as opposed to when you were first coming out.
argghhh why am I a woman :( all perfect men are gay, ain't fair :D

@proboi522 That's why I did it. I couldn't sit back idly, knowing that my story -- along with the thousands upon thousands of others -- could really make a difference in the lives of kids out there struggling with who they are and whether they want to continue to live. Thanks so much for the feedback :)

Ciao Bello Matt!
I'm sorry I haven't visited your wonderful contribution to this most important project earlier! An effort that I might add, is very dear to my heart! You're so right about the messages that young people get in the home environment, being crucial, weather subtle or overt!
blainebill39 11 months ago
@blainebill39 With the thousands of videos to go through, there's absolutely no need to apologize. Thank you for taking the time to respond to mine, though. It means a lot to me that this video has been seen and struck a chord with people. Take care :)

@mandminia A boy I once loved , long ago (Bobby Griffith/Prayers for Bobby) unfortunately heard only demonizations of queer(LGBT/gay) people, which sadly hammered his sense of self worth, resulting in his taking his own life! I'm so thrilled though to witness today, people like yourself and legions of others stand up and speak out!
Grazie Mille Per Tutti!

@blainebill39 I can't even imagine the pain he must've been in. Hopefully this project reaches those who are in the same situation and causes them to take pause and reconsider their decision. Take care :)

Thanks Mat. what you said had hit home. i from longisland and at that time being gay was unacceptable among my family and friends. im just coming out now at 38 y/o and i realize i made a huge mistake keeping this secrete inside me.

@29kevin29 I'm so glad your'e comfortable now being who you are. It takes courage and sometimes a lot of time to reach that point, but it's truly a great thing to be able to live your life fully and honestly. Thanks for commenting :)

it's so hard for someone to believe/understand what the itgetsbetter videos say but i really hope they do
adoringcarmine 1 year ago

It also sucked that you couldn't watch certain shows with gay elements to it, but i do think it's so much harder to avoid now (with glee and modern family and such) as opposed to when you were first coming out.

great video Matt, a lot of what you talked about reminds me of my life. Good on you for the positive message you are giving young GLBT's
