I love the fact that tornado has proved we still know how to make a good steam engine, better looking and sounding than electrics and im sure probably more on time!
I love the different colors that British steam locomotives choose. Black, the choice of most American steam locomotives (and for that matter most other countries too, with the exception of perhaps Poland), is so commonplace that it downplays the vibrance of these engines. I've often wondered if Black was selected because the companies didn't want to wash the coal soot off their engines that often and thereby reduce the amount of down time?
Thank you kindly for this superb clip ..excellent ....why oh why do we always get low IQ foul mouthed idiots make their illiterate and insulting comments.
Where is your education and etiquette? you are making some british/english seem oafs.
3.If they take 60022 apart theres going to be no end of problems underneath anyway and it would be one hell of a job as the NRM have got problems with Scotsman at the moment. Enjoy whats left of Britains heritage.
Yeah but only once, and it nearly fell apart after doing so. Mainline units today are far quicker in terms of timetabled speed. Steam sadly could not keep up 124 mph...
I haven't read all the comments, but my understanding is that this is the most recently built - from the ground up - steam loco in GB, and incorporates some features not found on the original Peppercorns
The loco has never had a boiler explosion. Should have been scrapped 65 years ago you say? Well she would have had a job when she was only completed last year!
And 65 years ago the original A1s hadn't even been built!
Clearly you are someone who has no idea what you are tallking about.
Thanks for the info about the chime whistle - I work in Portugal now and cannot see the spectacle of Mr Peppercorn's reincarnation. Thanks again for posting and sharing these excellent clips with us on the net. My hat comes off to you Sir.
Hi Doctor. I worked in PR for Scotrail for 14 years, and one of the highlights was to film and record the Great Marquess's three cylinders attacking the grades of the West Highland Extention - the line for which she was originally built to work. I served my time filming by the linesides and directed my comments not to your knowledgeable remarks about the whistle, but to the other individual trying to be helpful, but clearly unaware he was being recorded. Keep filming and making us happy.
DoctorTankEngine demonstrates his patience with a fellow onlooker who clearly is unaware how his comments will be enshrined in this excellent clip. Can anyone tell me if that chime whistle is an original, taken from a scrapped A4, or is a replica........?
I'd say she'd be capable of way over 110mph, as are many similar Pacifics, especially light engine on todays smooth and welded tracks. She's already been well over 90 if youtube footage is anything to go by!
if your on the tour on the 7th like you said after departing peterborough if you look out of the left facing kings cross you might see me and some mates at yaxley bridge
Why are all the English whistles always sooo high pitched?!

That high intensity headlamp is REALLY annoying...it spoils the whole look having that thing beaming out the front like the North Star.

Wait a second, so is this loco making regular service runs, or does it only come out for special needs?

The one thing i don't like about European steam loco's is their horn. It's too "shrill" and high pitched. I LOVE American steam whistles though!

Yes but It can be done and all the others are great but the Mallard would be very special so lets have it back where it belongs on the main line
burnley5960 2 years ago
I reckon someone should build a replica...only cost 3m to build one, so what's the big deal? Easy money for some people.
edj66 2 years ago
well with that name you could be either so canadian or american still the same.

Doesnt it feel like Britain is steadily going back to steam. Great vid btw!! Why dont they restore the mallard!
DanM012324 2 years ago
ok ill say it again =P
1. Mallard is the current speed holder.
2. Theres 3 working A4's in Britain anyway.
3.If they take 60022 apart theres going to be no end of problems underneath anyway and it would be one hell of a job as the NRM have got problems with Scotsman at the moment. Enjoy whats left of Britains heritage.

I never realise that steam engine can travel that fast.
(I am form Hong Kong. All our train is electrical and computerized without artistic genre)

Dont forget Mallard did 126 MPH..... faster than many "Mainline" units.. even today...

She has an A4 whistle indeed.
But it's not from 60022, as that is Mallard.
The Whistle is from 60023 Golden Eagle, maybe thats what you meant :-)

It's amazing to think that back in the 80's when I was born there were know A1s.
And now today we have one working on the main line.
She is a beauty, look forward to seeing her in BR Express Passenger Blue!

This thing wrecked & had a boiler explosion. It was off to the scrap yard with the junker!
It should have been in the junk yard 65 years ago!
Junk the steam locomotive and it's tender!

Yes, I'm surprised too. Maybe they can buld an A1/A3 next! But thats just wishful thinking :)

Well we have the Flying Scotsman he's an A3 so that just leaves an A1.
Damocles178 3 years ago
steam engines are commonly known as she's not he's !because they are unpredictable like women,we have a A1,A2 and a A3.

See what you mean, her drive wheels must be 6 foot across, giving in effect a high gear ratio.
dieselmanmike 3 years ago
The A1s have a 6 foot 8 inch wheel :-) where as Pepps A2s like Blue Peter had a 6foot 2inch wheel
DoctorTankEngine 2 years ago
I believe Network Rail have cleared her to do 90? And I've heard they were edging on 100 on a few of the runs ;-)
