  • What game is Bernard from?

  • @AniSolidGantz Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle.

  • whys it red and green?

  • I would really appreciate a videoexplaining how you got to have this embark site, what settings used (and why) and what considerations did you employ while finding the right spot from all the available locations. I never get to have Iron, or Flux in a map even though I specifically search for them. Hints like this would really help to the best ever experience. The rest of your videos are excellent, so I feel like i should complain here to make this part excellent as well ^^

  • the red is messin with mah eyes

  • I like the graphics. It encourages you to use your imagination. Whenever I'm playing a game such as this but with better graphics, I always wish that something looked different, or felt different. Well, with this game, it looks however I want it to look!

  • Oh, I hate underground rivers. My first fort had one. I had a nice base on one floor and started to dig my central staircase. The first level down dug out right on top of the river. "Oh well" I thought, I'll just make it a well. But no. Every time a dwarf got anywhere near that staircase I read "Urist McScardypants could not complete task, interrupted by <insert creature here>". I couldn't even wall the bloody thing in...

  • I'm hooked on your videos... And I haven't even downloaded the game yet. I'm calling it a night, after 23 consecutive videos. Thank you!

  • @disiper360

    yo, then you better not watch this so you don't risk turning gay yourself. I play this game myself and now I turned gay too. Too bad your hint came this late, you might just have saved me from turning gay.

    Now I'm doomed xD

    ~~~
    I've watched until this part and also a few DF2010 episodes. Nice that there is already a prepacked plug-and-play version I can put on my external drive. Thx captnduck :D In the next days I'll start my first game and hopefully I loose, it's said to be fun ;)
  • The video is broke. I watched it before, though, so I think the new Youtube Interface is to blame somehow.
  • "..and when I unpause I should have built a lot of stuff.."
    "alright! I built a lot of stuff.."
  • To make this game into a sellable product, it needs to be cut ten times and packed up with a fancy graphics. Anyway, any "commercial" Dwarf Fortress will be entirely different from the game we all know and love. Still i agree that development is too slow.
  • Anyway, that's enough on that. There are some very well-made videos to watch so people (including me) can lern2fort, and I suggest you do the same. You might learn something and maybe get the encouragement to get a graphics pack that will solve at least a few of your problems.
  • Your problem with the river is that yo can't see it in its entirety. You can't see the top, and you might not be able to see the bottom.
  • @bobbysnobby you can see what is happening if you look.
  • I like the part when you died.
  • The game is so fun you dont have to complain of bad graphics. Just get May Greens pack and it should help alittle. The game is Very fun if you get used to it.
    Rember! Loseing = Fun :)
  • this would be awesome if a large corporation bought up the rights and using the same system 100% create a new dwarf fortress but just updating the UI and giving it some graphic appeal, would be killer. That being said i dont think i could get into it with all the complicated commands and lack of visual appeal.
  • The game is made by one guy who is doing it for a living. He gave up his job as a professor and is now living off of donations from this game. He does this because he likes making his game.
  • @bobbysnobby haha i find it so funny that people sit there and would say Use the same frame work and system but make it more user friendly? screw that..... what an odd position to hold the gentlemen who is currently working on it could sell the rights and live off that rather than donations
  • Yes, exactly what we need, "large corporation"s swallowing indie companies and innovative games so they can be watered down for the "casual"(read: braindead) gamer.
  • well its interesting you would say brain dead as you ignore one of my provisos is KEEP IT THE SAME, this game has the worst ui system on the planet to say wouldn't it be nice to have a team of people clean it up isn't a Travesty. To argue that "I prefer crappy ui to cleaner ui" is just stupid and validates your state as a vegetable.
  • I don't prefer a crappy ui, but I'd rather have a crappy ui and a good game than an awesome ui and a crappy game, which is what would happen is a "large corporation" swallowed this game.
    If you really want this game to improve, you should help the people who actually made it and distribute it for free.
  • The main problem with your suggestion is that it isn't finished yet. Toady has MUCH more work to do before he redoes the UI. Once the actual game is finished, though, the UI WILL be improved. So, you see, there is no need or even place in the development of Dwarf Fortress for outside interference.
  • There's many very good reasons why the game is this way, but I'll give you the most obvious ones.
    For the most part, annoying people with no patience or those that don't do their own research would get destroyed by the game's system. Second, the game is an ALPHA. Alphas have almost no polish, period. Third, 12 Bay is a "one man company". Big companies can output "polished" goods faster because they have hordes of people each doing a task. Toady volunteers to do all of that for donations.
  • (cont.)
    Finally, Bobby, you're forgetting that Toady is making this game, and he does this because he wants to. He has zero obligation to do anything to make YOU happy over something HE wants to do HIS way, and no big name company is going to do things HIS way because big name companies don't employ hundreds of Toady Ones.
    Oh, and bonus reason: It encourages community interaction. Dwarf Fortress must be doing something right, getting LP'd twice and having hundreds of 3rd party add-ons.
  • You're saying, "I wish a large corporation would buy the rights to the game and then produce an excellent full featured game but still holding true to the feel of the original".
    Of course I agree with you.
    But the world doesn't work that way. They'll swallow the game, spit out a crappy knock off, make a few bucks, and forget about it.
  • You lucky bitch. I NEVER get bauxite with magma. I'm always forced to give up starting with an anvil so I can stock up on the stuff and getting it later by trading away my precious crafts.
  • Definitly not the graphics, sound or UI. But the simulation, managment and sheer amount of options is what this game has. Having your dwarves create a giant fortress from a simple hole in the ground is fantastic.
  • Don't forget watching your fantastic fortress get turned inside out by a natural disaster, like magma leaks, or being flooded.
    That's always hilarious.
  • @captnduck Can you tell me how to edit INI file so that it shows more stuff when you are embarking? (for the 2010) version. Or at least point me in the general direction I should be looking for such information.
    I'd be very grateful ;).
  • @MadeinHell2 That option isnt in DF2010 anymore since magma is standard now. Also just read the init.txt, it explains itself best.
  • How do you xcrool the ground up/down for mining?
  • , . MAKE SURE YOUR holding shift
  • CaptnDuck, I've been watching your tutorials for a while now, and I just wanted to say thank you. I spent weeks trying to assimilate the wiki enough to start a game comfortably, and it was never enough. Your first 7 or so tutorials got me over the hurdles on the front of the learning curve, and into my addiction.
    So, I guess what I'm trying to say is, if DF ruins my life, it's all your fault. ;)
  • It's not IF DF will ruin your life, It's WHEN DF ruins your life.
  • oolms are ectualy real creatures they only live in a cave in europe slovenia in the postojna cave
  • Yes, olms are real, but they're cave salamanders not eels
  • I had a fortress in an obsidian mountain. My dwarves starved because I can't make food. Well, I think they starved because I didn't hang around long enough to find out.
  • Best tutorials on the net for DF. Tutorials are for noobs, and noobs aren't that keen on looking up endless wikis, that's why yours is the best.
  • Looking foreword to see how to use Magma ^_^; haven't ad any yet in all the fortresses i made...
  • Since he skipped a bit (went too fast for me), i can explain, as i've currently experimented with a magma pipe myself. (and... mined the very bottom completely out so the magma flows down, but before my lava smithing) Heres a little something i tried. First you get a floor open with a channel, mine some downstairs near you stb muis. Dig a tunnel under it, and hope your dwarf can get away fast enough. DO NOT SET RESTRICT. Instead if they slip and die, place doors and forbid em.
  • What resolution/font size do you use?
  • 1280x400, Font is standard camtasia. For more info, i changed the channel info and put a link to a post explaining my video process there. It seems youtube doesn't allow posting links in comments.
  • Loving the videos, really got me into making my own fortresses.
  • I forgot to mention in this video, but the name of the fort is "Breakfastgears" and the dwarf group is called "The Guild of Brillance".
  • thank you so much!
  • The new location looks interesting.. lots of bad guys all over the place.
    How long did your old fort last (in dwarf years)?
  • High-rez videos take some time for Youtube to process so initially only the normal version is available. I noticed that when starting my Let's Play POWDER video series. ^^
    By the way - it was YOU, captnduck, who inspired me to record a roguelike video series since I reckoned that they're not as boring to watch as one might think (even if DF requires much more info which you are providing in tutorial form).
    Keep up the good work! Very informative!
  • Hey man, thanks for the newest vid, but where's the high rez? Coming soon, I hope?
    Love ya!
