  • Is that Candice Bergen?

  • The reveal of the onscreen banner / how "NBC New Update" is revealed at the very beginning seems to speak of state of the art (slow) computing of those days... As if to say the news comes in this fast! - A virtual 'flash', but... they still had a ways to go. Post-"ticker tape" but the wire service relays (guess that was the term back then) was probably still printed out as some sort of hard copy text.

  • This News Update was from February-1978

  • The NBC News Update (anchored by the late Jessica Savich) was v/o by the late Bill Hanrahan and "The Little House on the Prairie" and "The Wind and the Lion" promos were v/o by the late Howard Reig.

  • The Hillside Strangler case was probably the biggest True Crime story of the late 70's

  • Having said that, I just watched her Lifetime Intimate Portrait and was fascinated and saddened by her lifestory

Poor thing, at least she has peace now

  • Up close and personal was based on her if I am not mistaken.

  • Well, it started out that way, but Hollywood thought it would be too depressing, so they changed it to be more like "A Star is Born"

  • Nice to see a newscast where she wasn't drunk or coked up . . .

  • little house on primetime?

    those were the days.

  • Jessica was sooooooo hot

  • She had psychic feelings about her death.

  • If she had not been such a good journalist then perhaps the end of her life at such would not have been so tragic. But she was VERY GOOD, and that is the shame of it all.

I wish she could have been helped.

  • I remember these news breaks..Jessica Savitch was the best..such a shame when she passed in such an awful way...

  • all the shit that she had to go through who could blame her even if she did do drugs, i had such a crush on her when i was a kid. very intelligent woman, truly missed.....

  • @slusher67 damm it hurt ju look at her i had a cush on her2 i will never forget those feeling a young boy cant forget she was my "secret girl freind"

now i m an old farted up man wit hfading eye slight .

    the mwas the daz.

  • True, i've heard the News Digests/Capsules actually had a larger viewing audience than the Nightly News broadcasts. I miss these good old days.

  • she's absolutely excellent delivering the news here--if she was on drugs or doing them in '78 i can't tell.

  • anybody who has the utterly disgraceful ignorant and tactless nature to remark on her use of cocaine or any other substance-- licit or illicit, is simply demonstrating his lack of understanding of what substance abuse truly is. Beyond this, he or she fails to comprehend American Culture at this time period. Cocaine was not only widely used by many celebrities, politicians and professionals, but nearly condoned. It was a ubiquitous phenomena. You cannot summarize a life and career this way.

  • What is with the box on the table?

  • She was a true class-act.

  • I wish there were some videos of cassie Mackin or Nancy Dickerson, other great NBC female reporters.

  • she was my girl when i was a tiny one, and the old school was so cool. :)

  • rip jessica,and chewey,her beloved siberian husky!

  • She was a great broadcaster, a pro, and is missed.

  • Yes, such a pro she did cocaine and then broadcasted live, ruining her career. What are you nuts? A face without brains is nothing.

  • Feel better now?

  • Have you seen the video? If so, you'd grasp that her sluring and distant expression aren't attributable to cocaine use. It's a stimulant. It doesn't cause slurred speech. Alcohol or certain meds do. Coke produces an ephemeral keenness and one would come off sharp, not dull/slurred. ALSO, she was a very intelligent woman: educated; she also taught journalism. Rather than illuminate your ignorance, go out and try to replicate her accomplishments. You probably are not a media pioneer, are you?

  • Let's not forget almost everyone was doing blow during this era in American life-even your current President was know to get his nose open. Savitch was the definition of profession, she makes B.Walter look like a host from Entertainment Tonight or something else low brow. Don't forget that blow was the nose candy of the yuppie elite...if she was freebasing that would be a whole nother thing man.

  • pspguy28,she made more money in one year than you will in 25 years.

  • This was from June 25, 1978, I think.

  • Jessica Savitch was a professional, in every sense of the word. Her delivery, her posture, carefully though-out facial expressions were always on point. Her personal difficulties underscore her supreme professionalism. She was truly a trailblazer and a pioneer, and her delivery and poise are still emulated and copied today. Yet, there is no journalist who has been capable of duplicating her dynamic talent.

  • Could anyone tell me more about the NBC News Update/Capsule/Digest? I know it was started in the mid '70s and ran until at least 1990 (I have a tape with Maria Shriver delivering the news). I also know that it was considered "journalistic backwater" (Almost Golden) but I'd love some more info...for some reason I find Jessica Savitch very facinating.

  • They may have been "backwater," but Jessica Savitch always recognized their importance and treated them as such. The audiences for the Capsule/Update/Digest was HUGE...much larger than any other NBC News broadcast. They also kept her in front of her audience as they watched T.V. in the evenings.

  • Therefore, while she was very territorial about her anchor slot on Saturday nights, she understood that her ability to deliver the Digests and do it better than anyone was her bread and butter at NBC. They were actually very tricky to do, timing-wise, and even when her star was descending at NBC, it was widely recognized that she was the best at them and that she was still wildly popular with audiences.
