Me ne dolgo e mi scuso sinceramente
I believe this recording dates from the early 1960s, which included Wagner (Lohengrin, Walkure), and which I bought because Del Monaco's "Otello" was one of my first recordings I agree with some of these posts, that he sounds dry and out of his sweet spot as a dramatic tenor. The "steel" is a bit unnerving in this gentle piece. Interestingly, he leaves out the interpolated high note at the end, which would have been teeth-grating for this voice, fach, and time in his life.
Does anybody know when and where this was recorded? I wish MDM had developed more capacity for lyrical singing. The steady MF-F-FFF grows tiresome, DESPITE his voice's extraordinary splendor at full volume. Here, alas, MDM's upper register sounds iffy at best and strained at worst. Five or so years before this, he would have hit the interpolated high note freely. Here he avoids it. Still an exceptional artist, but here at less than his best form --
@stevevandien At less than his best here, and still so very much better than the tenors singing today, he art of teaching and or learning the skill is being lost fast.
This is a freaky sound. I love it. There are different sounds that can be heard when a tenor sings out of his vocal area. This is awesome. LMK who can match this power and clarion tone
é chiaro che è un esperimento, ma devo dire che è abbastanza riuscito, considerando il repertorio svolto da questo grande tenore, è riuscito ad alleggerire la sua grande voce senza sforzo apparente. un saluto
DEL MONACO was a great tenor...but please ...He had nothing to do with the real DOLCEZZA, necessary to sing this aria...let's listen to DI STEFANO and SCHIPA
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS. This recording is awful: full of static, shrill, it sounds like it was recorded in the audience. It's a disgrace to the great voice of Mario Del Monaco for people to hear this.
I disagree; it's essential to listen to bootleg recordings from the hall to get an idea of how a singer sounded to the audience member; studio recordings are decieving
Man, i have this at home, as i do also ALL of his operas, and YOU DESTROYED HIS COLOR, VOICE AND TECHNIQUE WITH THIS AUDIO/VIDEO POST! It sounds like someone completely different person is singing... Try to make more clearer sound and then post videos!
I'm not sure when this was recorded. I suspect it was during the period when industry people...as they are prone to do, especially today, encouraged Del Monaco to pull off the voice and sing lighter rep. This in effect takes away the amazing sound he is known for. This is not a dramatic aria. He should not be singing it. Del Monaco was the finest of the Dramatic voices. He is not in his element here.
I agree with Pearlmuth this is not a aria for a Dramatic Tenor of which MDM was of the highest caliber. This is not a easy piece to sing... being that antfreire & ljubomirpopovic panned MDM so badly here maybe they can sing this aria better. Agreed this was not MDM's best recording but it wasn't that bad. If Domingo is going to sing this at the Met now Heaven Help him.. for sure he wont take the High B, he hardly had a B when he was younger let alone now when he should be singing baritone.
God!!!!! How can any one say that this is a good rendition of this aria? This is the worst recording of Lamneto I'have heard. I am a fan of Del Monaco, but not this time.
Ma, nije to....mislim da je ovde već prilično star....i način pevanja mi se uopšte ne sviđa. Samo što to u nekim arijama se ne čuje tako. Ali....ko smo, bre mi da komentarišemo takvu veličinu? On je velik i u svojim lošim izdanjima i tačka! :)
Before anyone puts his version down they need to read the words and story here, not supposed to be sung in dramatic high power fashion he sings it correctly here but it is suited for a more lyric or spinto voice, a spinto role really and Domingo who is 67 will sing it at the met soon, surprised he would at this point, Del Monaco was a great dramatic tenor.
wow... young MDM- this was lovely and heart-wrenching. Nice colors & nuances and dynamics. It made me well up. This one & Mario Lanza's are my favorite versions- that "tear" in the voice makes these verismo arias all the more tragic. very nice rendition!

No. This was recorded in 1966. The conductor is Carlo Franci. I know this recording well and like it a lot. Del Monaco had lighter voice after 1963 for a few years. His performance during the period is not good, but this is one of the exception.
uh... well he recorded this role twice and this aria MANY times. i'm pretty sure, that this is his 1951 recording of JUST this song. especially since if this were a recording of the entire opera then there would be more music sung over the opening bars played in the strings byt the little (slightly) retarded kid. this is deff one of his older recordings. you can really hear that it's young del monaco from 2:50-3:00.
really, get a l'arlesiana score, there's missing stuff. this is a solo rec.
Yes, the track is from a solo recording. But this is certainly the version that he recorded in July, 1964 (sorry, not 1966) with Carlo Franci. I have both LP and CD versions. The 2-CD set, entitled "Tenor Arias, Mario Del Monaco" (London, POCL 4137/8), is still available from Japanese amazon. He recorded Wagner and Puccini in the same session, but only this track is superb.
that album is a compilation album. only a few of the tracks were new, i know this because del monaco personally never liked recording just arias. he did it when he was young, but only to market himself, from then on he rarely recorded just arias, and certainly wasnt recording them in 1964. his last recording session was in 1962, and those tracks were released later, along with others. the only new things on that album are the wagner and a few of the puccini. the rst are old.
i am not sure about this. because the version that i have is not mono. it's a good stereo recording, which is identical to this recording posted here (same time length 4:39). the voice and the audio balance is similar to wagner tracks. if this was recorded in 1951, then decca must have a genius producer only during the session. what's your source of the information? my source is the actual recording and the date is written on the cd, pocl-4137/8.
also, the cd has recording date for each track. according to the information, this cilea, fedora, donizetti, meyerbeer, bizet, and two wagners are from the same session in 1964 with carlo franci. they all sounds similar in terms of audio balance. it's clear, light weight, and stereo. it's not like muddy and dense sounds that we could hear from decca recordings in early 50's. the cd is officially released from london (decca) in 1996. the LP version that i have was also from decca.
oops. some corrections about my previous post. only cilea and wagner are from the same session in 1964 with franci. fedora, donizetti, meyerbeer, and bizet are also from 1964 but with erede. sorry for the confusion.

la pace tolta e solo a me. perche degg'io tanto penar?
lei! sempre lei mi parla ancor! fatale vision, mi lascia!
mi fai tanto male, ahime!

Somehow Mario has restrained his big voice and it sounds superb.
Like i say there are many fine versions of this from the likes of Aragall, Schipa, Kellen but MDM has it by a long shot.
