@NaughtyDogRex Gaahl ultimately retired from metal because he was being just what King ov Hell and himself falsely accused Infernus of being. A pristine example of his hypocrisy and lack of integrity.
@infernalone666 Maybe in that he doesn't like admitting he's wrong, although King is much worse in that respect (good case comparison: King tries to lull Gaahl back into his feud with Regain Records, but Gaahl doesn't give two shits after he and Regain sorted their own side of things out before hand). In any event, the processes leading towards Gaahl's environment were already in place during the dispute (not writing lyrics etc.), and had sort of been when he was still in Gorgoroth.
@DarkPrimeGS (continuing) Gaahl had thought about quitting Gorgoroth numerous times when he was still in the band, but it wasn't until later that he just lost the motivation entirely etc.
if that is so, then why did he wait until right after the dispute was settled to drop out of the black metal scene if it was souring? he seemed perfectly fine being a black metal vocalist when he and king were stealing the title
@infernalone666 It wasn't that the scene was souring, it was that he was dossing about writing lyrics and just never got down to it. He was pretty much fine performing what was already there (although I believe King notes Gaahl wanted to cancel a show at Glasgow in 2007 in a diary entry). Remember, among other things he went on holiday for two months in Spain in early 2009 instead of writing lyrics, signs of lack of enthusiasm that made his departure somewhat predictable.
He was just not prepared to make such absolutes so soon. In the past he eventually found the right track at somepoint (possibly when a deadline was imposed on him), but I don't think he was too interested in helping out King like that (not saying he would have felt any better collaborating with Infernus, all three already had some form of dislike for each other I believe).

@infernalone666 Maybe in that he doesn't like admitting he's wrong, although King is much worse in that respect (good case comparison: King tries to lull Gaahl back into his feud with Regain Records, but Gaahl doesn't give two shits after he and Regain sorted their own side of things out before hand). In any event, the processes leading towards Gaahl's environment were already in place during the dispute (not writing lyrics etc.), and had sort of been when he was still in Gorgoroth.

if that is so, then why did he wait until right after the dispute was settled to drop out of the black metal scene if it was souring? he seemed perfectly fine being a black metal vocalist when he and king were stealing the title

@infernalone666 It wasn't that the scene was souring, it was that he was dossing about writing lyrics and just never got down to it. He was pretty much fine performing what was already there (although I believe King notes Gaahl wanted to cancel a show at Glasgow in 2007 in a diary entry). Remember, among other things he went on holiday for two months in Spain in early 2009 instead of writing lyrics, signs of lack of enthusiasm that made his departure somewhat predictable.

He was just not prepared to make such absolutes so soon. In the past he eventually found the right track at somepoint (possibly when a deadline was imposed on him), but I don't think he was too interested in helping out King like that (not saying he would have felt any better collaborating with Infernus, all three already had some form of dislike for each other I believe).
