  • Bring back AMC

    American Motor Corporation

    American Made Car

  • You haven't lived until you've laid a mile long patch of rubber with a 304 Gremlin.

  • My grandfather had a '76 Gremlin X with 52K actual miles, yellow, identical to the one in this video, save the wheels are different. He passed away in August. Car stored away now.

  • we had two diffrent hornets when i was a kid in the 70's,I miss those old cars.lol.

  • Check out what AMC cars are bringing on ebay. When I was a kid dad bought a 1968 AMC Ambassador. With Zero maintenance, that car kept on going and going for years.

  • Only thing that matters here, same drive train as the amx/javelin and a whole lot less weight, talk about as factory sleeper.

  • They had me sold at the special "X" striping! :P

  • Reminds me of the movie Cars 2 !

  • 76 my old man bought a pair of used ones from the AMC back lot in springfield, ohio.. for 1,000 bucks..a purple X and a green X. i was 8 and had 2 brothers 7 and 4.. i would drive one and they the other (1 steer , little bro, sit on the floor and push pedals by hand)..around the farm in the feilds playing bump and run, gigglin our ass off. stop long enough to drop some hay out the back hatch.. wish i had both those cars now.. was fun cars to drive..beat riding BoBo the Bull. the good ol days

  • I rather cherish the Sportabout, even though my family never had one. I wish I actually had a Sportabout X - just for the fun of it.

  • AMC gets quite a bit of respect these days and rightfully so. The most die hard Ford, GM and Dodge guys never seem to have a bad word to say about them at car shows. Even the Gremlin and Pacer has a special following that continues to grow.

Only fools that seem to badmouth AMC (or really any unique old car) are the Civic owning Ritalin Retards born in the 90s.

    Luckily their opinions don't count.

  • i can't believe these were popular. This is almost as bad as the Pinto.

  • LOL. Fond memories. Our Aunt Emily won 'his &hers' Gremlins on the Price is Right back in 1972 ... one was silver, and the other bronze. We thought she was a Goddess after that - but she suffered from us calling her "Aunt Gremily" from then on.

  • @RitzyTrailer

What a cool story. Have you by chance found a video of that episode?

  • uh...mcmahon.

  • is that ed mcmann?

  • $2,998 adjusted for inflation that's $9,750 dollars today which is still really cheap.

  • Damn those car are cheap and pretty ugly

  • $3549, Who could afford that? lol

  • @Betterifitsfree not me....

  • Only if compact cars were still this cheap today.I'm only 29 but it seems like everyones money went farther back then.

  • Indeed, it is safety among things which makes 'cheap' cars not cheap anymore.

  • @Blurredman

Also feature creep runs the cost up the low end AMC was very basic new cars today must have AC,MP3 player integration, power windows, power steering, and power seats,

Then there's the emission equipment EFI costs more to manufacture then a carburetor.

  • @ckearneyjr81 Yes,our money went a Hell of a lot further back then.I bought a 78 pinto for $3600 on the road, brand new.My parents bought a brand new 72 matador for $4200.It was fun buying a car back then, didnt have to mortgage your house just to buy one.

  • Does anybody remember the Gremlin commercial where the service station attendant asks the driver, "Hey lady, where's the other half of your car?"

  • @spdskte No, but I remember the one where the greasy mechanic with a paunch and a New Jersey accent says "Hey toots, where's the rest of your car"!

Well, whatever he says that ad is a classic. Wish I could find it somewhere.

  • @HeyRadialMoon that's the one.

  • What a bargain! Never got so much uglyness for so little money.

  • I also had a 76 gremlin,bought it off my sister in 81 for $500,sold it for $900 5 months later.

  • wow thats weird my 3000 doller mercades has 300000 miles on it and still more to come 25 mpg and no real bad thing about

  • @Darklordkime Diesel?

  • @Zerginfantry you bet your ass it is

  • @Darklordkime Fuck yeah!

  • Most people who degrade AMC cars never owned one. Ive owned many of these cars over the years. I currently own a 1983 Concord (based on the Hornet) with over 120.000 miles on it and its still a great car. Dont get me wrong. The big 3 made some nice cars but AMC made some pretty good cars as well. I would LOVE to have my 1968 Javelin back

  • @justjeff53: Jeff, I think pretty much anything made by AMC is underrated in some way.

  • @justjeff53 AMC always knew when they had to change something they'd be stuck with it for a long time to come, so they looked way out ahead when they redesigned. That's why although the last RWD AMCs had basically the same platform as the '68 Javelin, they were still just as advanced as anything else on the road- and more so than others.

  • @justjeff53 and those that buy and drive subaru's today have no clue who came up with that all wheel drive system they so love. You can thank the amc eagle for that, and I'm still trying to find some one that owns on to actually part with it.

  • @remo1366 I owned a 1984 Eagle wagon and loved it. Forced to sell, long story. You can still find Eagles, at least here in Ohio. I've seen beaters and parts cars from 600 to 1000 dollars. nice ones can go for 3 to 4 thousand but sometimes you can find a great deal. Look on craigslist. Good luck finding your Eagle.

  • @justjeff53 nice, was holding out for one of the sx eagle coupes, maybe one day.

  • AMC should have used the money they put into the Pacer on a new Hornet and gremlin replacement.

  • @ducatinova You are right, they never should have dumped all that money into the design and tooling for the Matador Coupe as well.

  • @ducatinova Absolutely. They could've easily used ideas from the Pacer and applied to their aging bread and butter cars. Imagine adding Rack & Pinion Steering to a Hornet or Gremlin? Maybe investing in a 4 or 5 speed transmission? Heck, '75 and '76 AMC's only offering in manual shifting was an antiquated Borg Warner 3 SPEED!! Ever seen the Gremlin G/II concept? It was basically a Spirit but much more stylish. Imagine the Spirit coming out in '73 as a Gremlin replacement! Wasted on the Pacer!

  • Was that Egg McMan? What a tough car to try and convince the public to buy! lolz

  • i would give $3000 for a US built car today !! .. Oh how the times are a changing !

  • Comment removed

  • I realy think that for 1976 concidering how crappy othere car models we're the AMC's were pretty good looking in the X package.

  • Sounds like Ed MacMan, Gremlins are cool, too bad they get a corny rep now

  • This is great! My aunt had a New Gremlin, in white with blue stripes. She ran that thing to it's death.

Someone answer this for me.....On the AC controls there was a knob that you could turn to "desert only". I always wanted to turn that knob. What was it? Did it start shooting out ice cubes? I was to scared to turn the knob.

    Thanks for the memories!

    Brent

  • The way I had it explained to me (for my 1969 Ambassador) the "desert only" setting was for use in low humidity areas because the York AC compressor could lead to the evaporator freezing up.

  • Makes sense. I guess this would cycle the compressor off and on more.

As a kid I thought it was so interesting. I wanted so bad to turn that knob to desert only!

    Brent

  • Man! My 1st car was a '76 Gremlin-X that I bought used in 1980 for $1200CDN ... miss that car!

  • you are the god damn luckiest person alive

    I LOVE GREMLINS!

  • My first car was a 74 Gremlin. It was yellow with a 232 in it.

  • My first car was a '76 Gremlin...new...I sold a motorcyle I had for $300 to come up with a down payment for the car. Great car, never a problem. Traded it in for a new AMC Spirit in '80. And, by the way, my YouTube handle is "76gremlin". Thanks for posting the commercial.

  • I believe this is Ed MacMan as the Spokes Person. It's a bit blurry but He use to do AMC commercials.
