It is a known fact that the East German sports committee were systematically drugging their athletes. This is not mere speculation. We shouldn't accuse athletes of drug use based purely on their immense accomplishments. What Janet did was incredible, but beyond that fact, there isn't anything that should cause suspicion.

Yes, but is there evidence that Janet Evans took steroids? We can't accuse Evans of steroid use because some other American athletes were guilty. No one should be guilty simply because of nationality. Drug use is a worldwide problem, not just within specific nations. What I'm saying is that everyone should be given the benefit of the doubt, unless there is cause (besides a great performance) that should generate doubt.

I swam with Janet Evans when I was younger at a camp. I swam in the same lane for some laps, it was really fun. Although her stroke looks bad with her straight arms and her head almost never or barely going down each stroke, she pulls it off well.

Think about this ... those swimmers chasing her down were those huge, steroid-fed, Eastern bloc monsters who were twice her size, such as Heike. Janet was a tiny high school girl who weighed nothing, but she absolutelty man-handled everything the iron curtain threw at her.
Such brilliant swimming!, I did not realise janet had such strong competition; 4:03, 4:05, 4:06, and 4:08 any one of those times would have won a major championship for the next 20 years. What happened to women's distance swimming after this, such quality here, then nothing til now?!! weird. LOVE Janets stroke rate BTW. Fantastic!
The reason the "quality" dropped after this was due to the break up of the eastern bloc, meaning no more state sponsored doping programs. Yes Evans was fantastic but the East Germans were all frauds.
