Anyone know if the original show had the chandelier crash into the audience? I was confused to see it crash onto the stage when I went to see the show, because I thought I had heard that it hangs over the audience and crashes into it..
@becki986 The Chanderlier does hang over the audience - just. It hangs just kind of over the first 8 rows from the stage and crashes onto the stage, just avoiding Christine; It has been like this ever since the show opened in London. :) hope that helps.

Michael Crawford is the KING of this role. Anyone who prefers Butler obviouly prefers him only for his looks. He was not very correct, or maybe I should say Schumacher (spelling) was not correct in showing who Erik/Phantom is. Butler is a movie phantom- stage actors are generally of a "higher" quality, as they have to overact to compensate for the technical shrotages, compared to movies.
That said, i do not believe that Michael Crawford would be terrible in a movie, but Butler does a great phantom for a movie.
i would not care to see him on stage, but his performance in the movie was not terrible.
Cont'd...MC combines a beautiful, haunting, ringing tenor that is both heartbreaking and strong and tender when it needs to be. This also is not the best recording( know offense to the poster ). Check out Michaels other recordings of his reprise. I love the fact that Michael doesn't shout everything. He sounds like a man who has just had his heart broken by a woman he loved and you can feel his fustration at the end. Plus his laugh is wonderfully sinister sounding. Just an opinion though. Peace.

Well, I think Michael Crawford's style is better because of the character he's portraying. The Phantom can be brutal yes, but at heart he's very gentle and romantic. In this scene, his gentle and fragile nature is being accentuated because his feelings have just been crushed by seeing Raoul and Christine kiss. I'm not saying Gerard Butler is bad, I think he did an excellent job, however, I say that for this scene Crawford is the more appropriate choice. Professional Opinion Guys :P

Michael Crowford's voice isn't nice to listen to. It's too shallow and it has no power and support behind the sound.
Gerard Butler doesn't sing. It sounds terrible.
Anthony Warlow and John Owen Jones are the best phantoms, with Jones coming on top of Warlow in terms of believability.
Clearly everyone has their own tastes, but JOJ and AW have much better technique and sound. Listen more carefully k thx.
