Come on man....you can mess this this cut. I mean, when I hear this it brings me back to when I was a kid in NYC. When things were simple and love was REAL. Man I miss those days. I thought Harlem was the greatest thing ever back then.
I remember this song very well. I was almost 13 years old, when I saw EW&F preform this on Soul Train. Well, I took my baby sitting money, that I had been saving for weeks, and went to Tower Records, on Broadway in Sacramento, CA., and purchased "Speak to the Sky" on Colombia label, and drove my parents nuts for over a month...I wore this album out :)
"evil.. runnin' through my brains....we and evil 'bout the same. bad blood, through our body flows....where's the love? nobody knows....................."
EVIL was colonial slavery EVIL is today's MODERN DAY OF HIGH DEVIL WORSHIPPING TECHNOLOGY by our own hands tsk tsk tsk!!!! but this as every EARTH WIND AND FIRE Jam is the jam great musicians please come back great musicians we are all tired od the fake ass sh___ that does nothing for our veins
1973 was a very good year.....When Earth, Wind & Fire came into their own......they had already released music on Warner Brothers (if I'm not mistaken), "Head to the Sky" began a magical journey that lasts to this very day...GOD has touched this group to deliver the SPIRIT of what is right & true in his love.......Peace & Blessings to everyone.......Oneness
if you take a hard look back...1973 was THE year....not just soul and funk...all of it...the list of artists that made their mark that year is amazing
MY GOD MY GOD MY GOD. The early 70s. I so remember this!! AS a child. Playing tag while this would be blasting from the speakers in the hood. thank you so much
I truly Jessica Cleaves would have remained in the group after she left the Friends of Distinction. She is truly a remarkable voice along side Phil Bailey. You do know she is the lead on I Really Hope You Do by the Friends of Distinction.
this is the cut that brought them fame...rightfully so...so much good music at that time abd they managed to push everybody aside with tis new sound...marvin, diana, michael make room for ew&f!!
This isn't about the end, but letting all people know that these feelings and emotions are in all of us. There is only one GOD for everyone and we are the ones who destroy each other - FREE WILL is too much to handle for mortals to handle unless you can rise above to see everything in it's context.. @RAYGOR55 Thanks for including the great white thugs. I agree with you, but there's a major difference. The great white thugs are an abstraction, not impacting our daily lives in a visceral fashion. And tell me something, Mr. Raygor. If you ran with the big banker dogs, wouldn't you have done the same thing? I don't hate the great white thugs, I'm jealous. Ahhh, yeah. the early '70's. Big hair, platform shoes, flared jeans and polyester. Look'n like a clown, but was so, so cool. Our moto: "Party on!!!!," and way tooooooooooooo much get high. Red Columbian weed, Red Lebonise Hash, Thai stick and Purple Micro dots. And me, "Muchismos Loco!!"
@robldyson wow you must be from my generation. i had big fun back then . just love to dance. smoke a joint . you talk about columbian Red oh my goodness. i smoked plenty of that back then. ha ha ha. now i don't get high at all. my bad i did smoke a joint on the day my mom pasted. i haven't smoked close to 30 yrs, man i got Highhhh.whew. i remember that . it took me way back.

They don't make music like this anymore!!!! The lyrics, the vocal and instrument arrangements and the vocal harmonies along with my fav, Verdine White's baselines!!! This definitely a classic for all times
This is the first EWF track that I remember, period. Love this tune - it goes to the very fiber of all that I remember about this band. Thanks for posting this song!
I can recall seeing EWF live in the 70's....what a show!! Verdine flying thru the air playing guitar, the whole group vanishing before our eyes,a laser show....... Nothing less than AMAZING!!! It was all done with the assistance of the great magician Doug Henning. A tight horn section, and smooth vocals made EWF,one of a kind. EWF....a TRUE r&b legend
@mdc815 YOU AND I BOTH BUDDY AS THERE'S NO MESSAGE (NOT WORTH HEARING ANYWAY) IN THE MUSIC NOW A DAYS AND TRUE THE CLIMATE WAS A LOT DIFFERENT IN THE 70'S THAN NOW BUT STILL IT'S NO EXCUSE FOR THE SLOP PUT OUT IN THE GUISE OF MUSIC TODAY AS THE CLIMATE NOW IS JUST AS BAD IF NOT WORSE! "That's The Way of The World" is my absolute favorite song but evil is a close second. I heard this song for the first the first time in 1987. i can't believe that this song doesn't get airplay, not even on xm and sirius. iwould love to see EWF play this song live.
@glasscitadel12 i do actually. also; "win or lose", "sailaway" and love goes on". i think this album hasn't recieved nearly the recognition it deserves.
@GDCTT I agree, this album didn't receive the recognition it deserved. The "Keep Your Head To The Sky" album was hottttt!!! And "Evil" is off the chain...
THIS IS ONE BAD ASS THIS GROUP 1 OF THE BEST GROUPS EVER ASSEMBLED WITHOUT DOUBT ANDTHIS SONG BRINGS ME CLOSER WITH MY MAKER A TRUE GIFT AND FOR THE PEOPLE THAT ENJOY IT MUST KNOW THE SECRET. THATS RIGHT WE ARE SOUTHERN CAL
@Krazy3912 What about "Clover?"..back then E W & F had not gone "commercial" yet and were still under the "Ramsey Lewis" influence. A TOTALLY DIFFERENT band then what they evolved into.
this is one of my favorites from EWF. the moment i hear that latin beat start, i am taken away into another world, its so amazing how certain songs can do that, and this one definitely does!
i love this beat, i don't know what they are saying all the time but i can make up my own words and catch up with them laughing out loud !!!! thanks for posting
I remembered hearing this song for the first time in 1973 on a small radio in our kitchen. I was so amazed because I had never heard anything like this before. This was my beginning to the journey that would cause me to be an Earth, Wind and Fire follower. The words were as hypnotic as the song to me. I was young, but I could not break myself away and I always remembered this song for years to come. One of my all-time favorites.
No one bothered to mention the fact that this jam has some definate latin influences. So I will. Sounds like a cross between El Chicano & Sergio Mendes. I love the way the bass and Fender/Rhodes keyboard flows over that latin beat. Muy Caliente!! Soul & Latin go together like tequila & lime. Yummy.
I have always loved this track EVIL by EW&F. The first time I heard it I was driving home from work. But the album hadn't been released yet. There was a Mom & Pop record store around the corner from my house. I worried their asses to death so much until they literally brought the album to my house and I paid for it. You just gotta love the uniqueness that EW&F possesses. Stil til this day their music is just timeless.
Oh, wow! I think this is the hottest cut Earth, Wind, and Fire has ever made...I had this Album when it first came out (no longer have it) and would like to replace it with the CD...Thanks for posting it!
Hell, yeah who would have thought these guys would be the killer musicians and vocalists that they turned out to be?? A fan for life,INDEED !! THEY WILL TRULY NEVER be Another like EWF !!
The first song I remembered hearing by Earth, Wind and Fire back in 1973! I had no idea who they were back then, but did I learn later on and became a fan for life! Thanks for the post!
"Evil/runnin' though our brains/we and evil is about the same/bad blood through our body flows/where the love/nobody knows." How prophetic. Maurice White anticipated the rise of thug culture.
Hell, yeah, this song is a genuine classic right here! I didn't even know it was an EWF until years after I heard it--this old dude I knew told me. It's rarely heard on the radio either, dang it! Was this ever a hit back in the day---it certainly should have been! A beautiful jazz tune, basically!
@DIJV79 Poverty, the lack of fathers, the glorification of thug culture by the Hollywood bagel-heads, the arm's length embrace by white youth - a perfect storm of events colluded to spawn and metastasize today's thug culture.
I can`t believe that no one has anything to say about this classic by EWF. Well i hope to get the ball rolling. I love this song just listen to it. Timeless is the word and probably my favorite song by this band. Thanks 4 the post.
This was my 1st EWF, song I was hooked @ 9yrs old. Thay were my musical inspiration, I later studied trumpet under rahmlee Michael Davis from their horn section. I'm with you, lets keep the legacy alive and well, they were the leaders of the pack with Evil that kalimba is wicked
I got this on 45 win I first heard it! KDIA Soul of the Bay back, in the day! It was the best SoulTrain line ever!

@GDCTT I agree, this album didn't receive the recognition it deserved. The "Keep Your Head To The Sky" album was hottttt!!! And "Evil" is off the chain...

Was this the EWF group that had the lifting piano stage show on tour?
nnowjazz 1 year ago
Saw them on public tv way back when and loved it maybe 73 I still have the album.
gyver49 1 year ago
...some of the singers were from the 'Friends of Distinction'. Maurice was still playing drums, and singing.

This song was what got me into Earth Wind and Fire. That song, Keep Your Head To The Sky and The World Is A Masqurade.
Krazy3912 1 year ago 2
@Krazy3912 What about "Clover?"..back then E W & F had not gone "commercial" yet and were still under the "Ramsey Lewis" influence. A TOTALLY DIFFERENT band then what they evolved into.

this is one of my favorites from EWF. the moment i hear that latin beat start, i am taken away into another world, its so amazing how certain songs can do that, and this one definitely does!
ChemicalCB 1 year ago
i love this beat, i don't know what they are saying all the time but i can make up my own words and catch up with them laughing out loud !!!! thanks for posting

One of my all-time favorites.
wandermusic27 1 year ago
just love the way that that kalimba wonders through the song. So relaxed and mellow.
MrJonlake 1 year ago

This song is an ols classic from '73(I was 12 years old at the time)would the kids of today like this old cut?
Chicago10281 2 years ago
Well I heard this for the first time last year when I was 18 and i love this song, but I have a different taste to other people my age.
I would kill to have this played on the radio - real singing and real instruments over autotuned voices and dance beats anyday.

Hell, yeah who would have thought these guys would be the killer musicians and vocalists that they turned out to be?? A fan for life,INDEED !! THEY WILL TRULY NEVER be Another like EWF !!

You just can't go wrong with an EWF song.

"Evil/runnin' though our brains/we and evil is about the same/bad blood through our body flows/where the love/nobody knows." How prophetic. Maurice White anticipated the rise of thug culture.

@hork111
