I think it might have had something to do with promotions- you know, the whole problem they had with the record companies.

They were just starting on their own around that time (I think it was somewhere around 2004, not sure of the exact date they parted ways with their Record Company) and it most likely negatively affected the promotion they got. No "big company" pushing them and paying for ads and such.
