@dranuc70 So says the idolizer of culture thieves of European origin. Bo Didley and the Black rappers inherited these rhythmns from their legitimate ancestors the same way we inherited our ancestors skin, hair, and racism from the people you defend. European defenders always claim that something great of non-European origin is a 'shared' thing which includes Europeans, while you claim exclusive European genius for scientific things. We claim our culture for our 'self importance' without shame.
@rounds28 The point of the rappers is that they sample(look up sampling in music) current pieces of music... from blacks, whites, indian, hispanic, and incorporate it into their raps, and very little is said or done. If one rapper took another rappers song would that be inherited or stealing? Sigh... Washington Carver and Eli Whitney are both african american scientist, they are given full created for what they did. And I agree, you have inherited racism from somewhere, I have not, sry.
@rounds28 Yes be proud of your culture! Just because an European sings an African tune or an African sings an Irish tune does not make them thieves. It means they appreciated something enough to want to emulate it. So by your reasoning there should be cultural segregation, and no one should be able to profit from their individual talents? Or that everything is free game? You can't have it both ways. And again, be proud of your culture. I am proud of mine.
All great artists steal their ideas from other great artists as their art will be stolen by still more great artists. Nothing is original. It all comes from the same source. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. At least they had the good sense and good taste to steal from the best. Still, that said, it would have been polite to acknowledge where they stole this from.
It was first recorded by SOLOMON LINDA not Linda Solomon, who made distinct changes in its arrangment and cadence and pared down the words from the Traditional version you hear on this. It is HIS version that The Tokens based their classic recording on, and HIS version that was recorded by The Weavers as "Wimoweh" years before The Tokens did their take on it.
The story I heard about this song was that, yes it is based on an African song. The Tokens did their interpitation of it and donated the proceds to charity(or maybe it was to the family of the [old African] person they got it from). And there was also some Dick that tried to clame it but lost his case in court.
An amazing version, so different to the commercial hits to be almost another song altogether! However, reading the comments back, it's sad that music, which is meant to unite, can cause so much anger and racism! You know who you are and you should be disgusted with yourselves on both sides!
This song reminds me of when I was a child, when we used to have family get together gatherings or things like weddings. My parents, aunties and uncles used to play Mirriam's songs and dance the night away ( UKUXHENTSA in Xhosa ) till morning. Being a Xhosa woman, I miss those days. I miss the traditional Xhosa dance (ukuxhentsa). I cannot remember when was the last time I saw a Xhosa doing that dance. Sigh.
The Tokens did "in fact" steal this traditional song written and sung by Solomon Linda. In fact they claimed that "they" almighty Septic Tanks were the ones that gave this song world-wide appeal ... forgetting that the original artist died a pauper while so many enriched themselves from his original. In any language - that's stealing. It was Pete Seeger who learnt the truth and made every effort to create restitution to the Linda family.
@kykdaar Fact: They gave it world wide appeal whether you are mad at them or not. I still think her VERSION of a traditional song has more feeling. FACT: she did not write the song. You can't have WRITTEN a TRADITIONAL song. A tribal song like that goes back 1000s of years bfore she was born. She may have been the first to historically record a version. So, restitution belongs to the tribe. A Native American Indian claiming they WROTE a particular Navajo war chant would not be correct.
LOL I read different opinions and shrug.I will tell you who I think sings that and all of the Disney soundtracks they have done well is "LADYSMITH BLACK MUMBAZA" AND I am an Native American/Irish gal. But I am a music lover, and if someone sings anything well they have my vote!*grins proud*
Original is beauty and original is AFRICAN. so whatever came after that we just enjoy. U say white kids wn't buy this but their fathers realised how great the song is and copied to make different versions. May be the Kids got no Brains. lol
wonderful voice and im welsh you know (rokes drift !!!) im not even supposed to like zulu,s :)) by the way tokens re recorded an early,r version so thay are blameless the lady that sing it in 1939 may well have stole it but not the tokens.
@KillerKastle Im not hating on them in no type of way but when comes to music i love the originals... Its sad when people discard the originators sorry
I never knew for sure that this was the real story behind the song. I rember as a child I had friends that lived in Kenya and they sang this song this way when they visited america. Now I hear it agian 40 years later and know where it really came form. Thanks for posting, what a great voice and wonderful to know what it REALLY means!
loved Makeba since I was a kid and feel I am most fortunate to have stumbled across this on Youtube. Love Jimmy Cliff's version too - But Makeba's voice is the pulse of the soil of Africa - I think!! You can hear heart, pulse, courage, tribulation, challenge and overcoming!
@saciji I have to agree with you. The very sole comes alive when you read what the words mean, and remember the people of South Africa, and all they have endured. What a wonderful performer, Story teller, and beautiful woman to sing this song.
Myriam Makeba is not will never be the creator of our western electronic amplification technology she holds in her hand nor that with which this was recorded nor distributed on the internet.
@buddyeagle I wasn't addressing you. I was responding to the video description in a parallel manner. At least my comment is accurate. This song was not "stolen". Some people have a pathological need to be perpetual victims. Sad.
um i know this has been up for a while but, the Tokens didnt "steal" this song! it was already recorded which means they were givin the rights to re-record it into a more modern and english version! so henridion28, you need to calm down cuase technically, this isnt your song either! it belongs to the world now and will always be a great peice of art to enjoy! (^_^)
@DJsissypool yea it belongs to the world now but It is and will always be our song to give to the world and back then they would've ne never let us release it it was tooooo black and to bold, so you calm down!
@lhdollbaby where did you come from? i was talking to the uploader!... and nothing is tooooooo "black" and too bold anymore! plus i am calm, look at the description for the video, its got the angry words in it! (^_^)
I really get tired of the extent the "Black Pride Movement" wil go to in order to gather in some self esteem. this song is what it is. but it ISN'T a popular rock song. and truth be told, white kids would NEVER buy this version, NOR dance to it.
Miriam Makeba is an immortal. Whatever she sung has become gold standard. I first listened to this in the '60s -- now it is 2011 -- and it is as great and fresh as ever. Miriam will live forever.
You gotta love Mariam Makeba & this is a very nice song, to be sure, but not graced with the magic that the Tokens brought to The Lion Sleeps Tonight. Their version was simply inspired in all of its myriad choices: instrumentation, arrangement, rhythm, and solo & chorous vocals in incomparable ensemble singing. Sometimes, a song is artistically evolved into something different, newer, fresher, & compelling, & for one magic moment, that is what The Tokens managed to accomplish.
@WALRU11: At one time I owned about 6 different versions of this song: The Tokens, Robert John (a re-do: He had been a member of the Tokens), The Kingston Trio, The Weavers, The Stylistics and Adam & the Ants. To say nothing of the Disney version. A much-loved song.
@TheGent2 Six versons. I can see that. This is one of those rare magical songs that manages to totally captivate listeners. For my taste, the Tokens version is the definitive one. It's layered complexity, musicality, wit and adroit vocal touches and instrumentality raise it above all other versions. Makeba is great, but it is indeed, in her rendition a "Mother Africa" melody, rather than a more diverse and universal song.
@slshusker no....not it's not lol. I also thought so actually but it it's not. This was actually brought up in court, but of course whotf cares about poor people in Africa not getting what they felt they deserved.
@mygeneration7 A lot of people don't know this, but "waka waka" is not originally from Shakira. This song was actually from West/Central Africa and was titled " Zangalewa"
@mygeneration7 A lot of people don't know this, but "waka waka" is not originally from Shakira. This song was actually from West/Central Africa and was titled " Zangalewa" Shakira just "borrowed" it
@henridion28 like 10 hours ago i also forgot to mention that token did not in fact steal that song at all you have your version in your language and token had their version in english with a twist on it. No part of the song was stolen at all and they have two very diffrent meanings so do some research before you talk shit. Still lady got a nice voice
DAMN YOU AFRICANS AND YOUR AMAZING VOICES. jk jk but seriously many african people are super talented singers, and there are just as many talented american singers so you guys just chill cuz its not a matter of life and death. Confucious says those with a coconut must honor those with a pineapple and they must honor those who eat papaya.
"Mbube" (Zulu: lion) was written in the 1920s by Solomon Linda, South African singer of Zulu origin, who worked for the Gallo Record Company as a cleaner and record packer, and who performed with a choir, The Evening Birds. Issued by Gallo as a 78 recording in 1939 and marketed to black audiences, "Mbube" became a hit and Linda a star throughout South Africa.
@MelroseMen great point, and let me also point out that this high rated comment states that "such singers are born one in a century" well then Africa must be wayyyy smaller than i ever thought because from 51'-64' we were pumpin out crazy voices left and right by the week.
Before I get flamed, I am American and grew up listening to her music. Her voice held up well, she was Xhosa and exhiled from her country. She brought the worlds attention to the evils occuring in Afrrica. Multiculturalism does not work. Nice thing about America, is everyone brings their "good stuff" to share. They left the bad stuff when they immigrated. They Immigrated to become "Americans". They shared their music, art and good food. and YES! I love that cat commerical Happy Camper :)
Picasso did not steal African art, he was inspired by it, and so we learned of it. Now go check out Makeba: the click song "Qongqothwane" and Emabhaceni" on cd-she was every voice in the chorus, taped it over and over again. However, Yma Sumac Chuncho on youtube, did no voice overs that is all her, she has 4 octaves and hit 5 and was able to be several voices at once. Also see her Mambo! Gopher. As for the Lion Sleeps see Advantage Jungle Commercial dog sings & cat roams and see IGUASSU falls
@july95211 , IGNORANCE IS IGNORANCE...I'm of mixed race, black, white & american indian. i see people by who they are, not their color or race. Yes some white folk are racist, but then you have people like you(i dont know what color you are) that a just as racist. Grow up, and stop spreading that hate!! As for this song, it's BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
This gives me the goosebumps, so much heart and soul, so so beautyfull.
Thank you for explaining this to us.
i know it was stolen by the americans from a poor musician Solomon Linda in 1939. His family is still poor, I have heard. A danish entertainer who made a danish version of it and sent the money to Solomons family.
I care about who wrote it because it came from his heart, and Solomon Linda
who wrote it in 1939, should have all the honore, it belongs to him
@darklordojeda In response to your response to my comment, we were all created in the image of GOD. Higher power what ever you choose to call him. So when you say we are not GOD or the spirit of GOD. I don't disagree that we are not GOD but I do disagree that we do not have the spirit of GOD in every single one of us. If people choose to believe differently then everyone has that right. But for me I know better. I have experienced him with my own heart, mind, and soul..... Thanks
It makes me sad that we as a human race are still so ignorant and angry enough to judge an entire race for what has happend in history. This entire world has always been based on good and evil. GOD made ALL people. I am American Indian along with a few other orgins of mixed blood and I am no were evil. So it just shames me that anyone in 2011 would still think that this is a black and not black issue as far as good versus evil. Everyone has a right to thier beliefs but really? Educate oneself...
Such a wonderful voice she's got!!! Who cares who wrote it??? I just thank God for endowing me with the gift of singing and hearing beautiful voices like Miriam's! Unlike parrots or birds, we sing for love, pleasure, sadness, and a thousand different emotions... Jst use your gift!
The "Highest Rated Comment" is very ignorant. First, the Tokens went to court to claim publishing rights because they created the English version (their case was thrown out of court). They DID claim to have composed it. Check your facts, necro.
The two "Highest Rated Comments" as of Jan 10, 2011 claim that "The Tokens...never claimed to have composed it," and that "Seeger thought it was a traditional." The Tokens went to court decades after their recording to claim publishing rights for eleven English-language words they inserted, and the case was thrown out of court because of the statute of limitations. The cover of my vinyl pressing of "The Weavers at Carnegie Hall" (from the 50s) reads "Wimoweh was composed by Solomon Linda...."
@Koodoze I am white and I totally hate the whole idea of "The Oz" What CRAP! then you have "The New Karate Kid". Who stole what from whom? That would be like some idoit doing out and rewriting "Harlem Nights" with only white people or "Roots" with only white people in it. talk about stupid people! Whites are not the ones that took classic movies and screwed them up.
@DRRFetters You white/ lightskinned , mixed, non-blacks are evil Edomites, your jealousy and hatred of the black race is like a mental illness, why can't you embrace your European roots and leave the black Afrikan race alone, we are a TOTALLY different species to you, and i thank god for that, i DON'T like white/ lightskinned, mixed ,
non-black races, your an evil and jealous of other peoples culture.
@july95211 My heart goes out for your saddness and ignorance. You would be happper if you'd take the time to return to middle school and complete your education my sad prejudice friend. I am totally agaist theft of any kind, you can not make any original art better.
@july95211 Just like some idiot copied "Here Come's Mr. Jordan" (1941, all white cast) then remade as "Heavan Can Wait"(1978, all white cast) neither of which had a trashy monolog. Along comes some idiot and remakes it in 2001 with of course a majority black cast, trashy monolog, trashy crap rap called "Down to Earth" unstarring "Chris Rock". But you know what, I get my laughs out of it because it is just that stupid something to make fun of.
@DRRFetters , You white/ lightskinned, mixed, non-black races are EVIL , your hated ,because your always trying to steal everything from black afrikans, i am black Afrikan and proud, i don't want ANYTHING to do with white/ lightskinned , mixed , non- black races, your culture thieves, black people hate you.
@july95211 Quit being racist you are taking a handful of white people and saying there all bad maybe i should say the same about blacks and say all they do is rob rape and do drugs but i dont i respect the black community as i do all races not everyone is bad i wish you would quit being narrow minded and see that all races have evil people in them
@tunerfish987 ,The white/lightskinned, caucasoid ,mixed, non-black race are the MOST evil thing that was ever created, their an evil germ / plague to the world, the world would be a better place without non-black races.
@july95211 If you see the world this way you are just as bad as you say every other race in this world is. Stop contributing to the problem, please educate yourself and then speak of what you REALLY know, and that is nothing but hatedred. Very vert sad that there is so much technology around to educate and still people speak of nothing they know about. I will pray for you and your hate in your soul. For God created ALL of us in HIS image.
@NETDNKC1 We don't LOOK like God, we ARE like God in spirit and in our ability to decipher right from wrong. Well almost all of us, maybe not Tunerfish987.
@darklordojeda My bad, did I say we LOOK like God or did I say WE were ALL created in the IMAGE of GOD? Cause if I said we look like GOD that is not what I meant. What i meant is WE ARE ALL CREATED ON THE IMAGE OF GOD. No matter, either way GOOD and EVIL are what they are, and either we as individuals on GODS earth are going to live to improve this world or we are going to distroy it. That is everyone's individual choice to do as they please, however becareful what you wish for.........
@DRRFetters You white/ lightskinned , mixed, non-blacks are evil Edomites, your jealousy and hatred of the black race is like a mental illness, why can't you embrace your European roots and leave the black Afrikan race alone, we are a TOTALLY different species to you, and i thank god for that, i DON'T like white/ lightskinned, mixed ,non-black races, your an evil and jealous of other peoples culture.

It was Pete Seeger who learnt the truth and made every effort to create restitution to the Linda family.
kykdaar 6 months ago 12
@kykdaar Fact: They gave it world wide appeal whether you are mad at them or not. I still think her VERSION of a traditional song has more feeling. FACT: she did not write the song. You can't have WRITTEN a TRADITIONAL song. A tribal song like that goes back 1000s of years bfore she was born. She may have been the first to historically record a version. So, restitution belongs to the tribe. A Native American Indian claiming they WROTE a particular Navajo war chant would not be correct.

@kykdaar stole is right like so many other things that they have enriched themselves on.

Miriam Makeba is an immortal. Whatever she sung has become gold standard. I first listened to this in the '60s -- now it is 2011 -- and it is as great and fresh as ever. Miriam will live forever.
BETTO30975 10 months ago
You gotta love Mariam Makeba & this is a very nice song, to be sure, but not graced with the magic that the Tokens brought to The Lion Sleeps Tonight. Their version was simply inspired in all of its myriad choices: instrumentation, arrangement, rhythm, and solo & chorous vocals in incomparable ensemble singing. Sometimes, a song is artistically evolved into something different, newer, fresher, & compelling, & for one magic moment, that is what The Tokens managed to accomplish.
WALRU11 10 months ago
@WALRU11: At one time I owned about 6 different versions of this song: The Tokens, Robert John (a re-do: He had been a member of the Tokens), The Kingston Trio, The Weavers, The Stylistics and Adam & the Ants. To say nothing of the Disney version. A much-loved song.
TheGent2 8 months ago
@TheGent2 Six versons. I can see that. This is one of those rare magical songs that manages to totally captivate listeners. For my taste, the Tokens version is the definitive one. It's layered complexity, musicality, wit and adroit vocal touches and instrumentality raise it above all other versions. Makeba is great, but it is indeed, in her rendition a "Mother Africa" melody, rather than a more diverse and universal song.
