What you're thinking of is the 90s style hardflip, where the board popsicles between the skaters legs. It's the same trick, just popped at a different angle. It seems that over time skaters have become more efficient at doing hardflips, likely from doing them off of gaps, and now they spin on a more level plane. hope that helps.
