The music might be a bit pretentious but hell, that's what makes it awesome. Why would you work hard to master an instrument and not use your absolute full ability while playing and writing?
@Tetsuo964Pinocchio Sometimes it's the soft tones, or simple things that make life great. Pulling back is not something to be ashamed of, it's sometimes looked at as being smart. I think that's what dynamics are all about.
I like how this had to be broken down into an Us v. Them argument. I played piano for a very short time - wouldn't call myself a musician - and I still love this stuff. You don't have to study music to enjoy this. As for the "too much noodling" comment, does Country have too much twang? Does Blues sound too sparse? I just don't understand a comment like "theres too much Noodling in this Jazz song." Its jazz for god's sake. Btw, what jazz do you listen to? Bebop? This song is incredible.

a bit over-indulgent, like much modern jazz - theory all you want, no one who doesn't study notes for a living is going to care, this is not musical, it is noodling.
@harlequin71 Real musicians write music they want to hear. Meaning, real musicians write music for musicians. If you do study notes or study sound or study composition it is very musical and very beautiful (not my fave bad plus song but still very impressive). if you don't like it, don't listen. This is for the 5%, not the 95%, and speaking for the 5%, we can't get enough!
I gotta say, while the interesting lyrics and haunting vocals make the original a complete classic, the force and suspense which these guys put into the outtro is for me quite an improvement to that particular element.
@muziekert do you like olives? I doubt you do. I hated them, but my father always told me to eat them because you'll find that they are the most delicious food. Don't criticise olives if you dine on big macs.......
i wanted to stay away from their covers, cause I wanted to hear their originals first. I'm glad I did. I found their style, and they apply it really well to the covers.
@muziekert the same way you can rape the comment section. no one cares that you dont like it, either you dont appreciate jazz or you dont appreciate good music so learn some music theory and try again later. thanks for playing
@MrPotatobot LOL true. I actually first heard Panic's cover live from a fan filming. I overheard a bunch of tween girls singing Karma Police. I no longer fear hell for I saw that video.
I don't like covers and I don't like extreme virtuosism and jazz, I love post rock and minimalism, I love Radiohead and I was the second person who disliked this video, any problem?? that's why the button is there... please respect everyone's tastes and opinions.
@Basswaffle It's just my opinion and it's my taste, how can that make me an ignorant? I'm just saying that it always will be someone who doesn't like what you love... and there's nothing you can do about it.
@andyEITS I don't understand how someone can just not like one genre of music. All music can appreciated. General statements like that make it seem like you don't know much about jazz. I also don't understand how it is "virtuosism".
For what it's worth, I tend to agree with you. I don't take it so much as virtuosity as I do some kind of arbitrary complexity. Brad Mehidou starts of with an amazing cover of Exit Music and it then turns in to some atonal piano noise because he gets to engrossed with HITTING ALL THE KEYS or something. In comparison a jazz Pianist like Duke Jordan is a virtuoso certainly, but he never seems to lose sight of simple beauty. I like that myself.

This is fantastic. I love it, but I can't find a download for it anywhere. My Bad Plus collection is incomplete without this. I love the way they really bring the tune out at the end. So much passion and energy. And it's a beautiful melody.
@richardjohn89 Thanks for that link. It's difficult to say where to begin. The first song I heard was their take on Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit which can be found on Youtube. Then I Youtubed them some more. "And Here We Test Our Powers of Observation" is one of the first songs I really loved. A lot of their music is difficult to get into at first but very rewarding. It's very varied as well because all three members contribute compositions, in addition to the odd cover like this one.

What I love about this type of music is that you don't know what will happen next, very unpredictable and exciting, atonal clusters ftw.
