voting has never been meant as a substitute for personal action to help others. if you truly believe voting makes no difference, no one's forcing you to vote, but i try to keep in mind the many places in the world where people are still risking their lives and being killed for such "simple" privileges. Sudan and Burma come to mind as current examples.

A vote for any politician in this country will not make this world a better place, it never has. And judging by the people who are STILL suffering in this day & age in all parts of the world, including in our own "privileged" U.S. of A., I strongly believe nothing will change in 2008. Our government will have to drastically change first before we, as Americans, can trust & not blindly vote for anyone who runs for office.

if you've got ideas to share about what changes will make our government and the world better, i look forward to hearing them. if you're just interested in criticising then i've lost interest in the discussion.

Of course I have ideas, just like every self-reliant person should, but it's quite evident that we cannot depend on our government, or people like you, to help this world become a better place. If a 'vote' to you seems to be the only answer & you actually rely on this government to change things for the better, then as Americans, we are truly worse off than I thought.

I'm not voting. Why? Because nothing chances when you do, especially when you vote here in America. As for donations, why not ask our fuckin' U.S. Government... If they have the money to start wars, then they should have the money to stop hunger, right? Voting in this country has always been joke & a waste of time. I think it's time for the American people to speak up & take control of our own lives.

spending hours and hours of one's time in political arguments is a waste of time, i agree with you on that. speaking up and taking control of your life is important, but there's no reason for it to be in an either//or relationship with voting. casting a vote doesn't take much time, and is important for democracy to work.

"Democracy" Now that's a word I haven't heard in a mighty long time. So JBraden, do you really believe that "a vote" can somehow change how bad things are in other countries as well as here in America? Politicians have failed & so has our government. Voting, in my opinion, will not change a thing. Only people have the power to help other people, not votes.

Chances are you know this, but in the 1960 presidential election, Kennedy beat Nixon by about 0.16 of one percent of the popular vote. In 2000, Al Gore beat George Bush by 0.5% of the popular vote, but lost the Electoral Vote 271-266, and the integrity of those results were highly dubious and only stood due to a 5-4 ruling from the Supreme Court.
